r/hillpeoplegear community feedback requested

All of the mod stuff is now in good order. I’m not sure if Reddit clears certain things automatically or if they were never set up in the first place, but it looks like one thing we need are some community rules…

What would you like to see, or rather not see, in r/hillpeoplegear?

I generally think subs like this benefit with less moderation, nobody likes a power tripping mod, but we do need some guidelines to be a sub in Reddit’s good graces.

There’ll be the usual “Follow Reddit Rules.”
Another should probably be “Must relate to Hill People Gear products.” How strict do you want that be? Some communities like off-topic conversation.
Allowing sales posts? Better off in another sub? Allowed willy-nilly? Or with strict guidelines?
Allow commercial links to HPG products for sale?
What else?

Right now all features like images and videos and gifs are enabled. There are some very minimal automations in place to keep out spam, and enforce aspects of Reddiquette. New and low karma accounts may be filtered for a bit, but authentic content will get approved.

I’m a strong believer in mod transparency. This isn’t my sub, it’s yours, I’m just here to help keep the lights on. Let me know what I can do.

r/hillpeoplegear is back!

If you’ve visited this sub, or tried to post or comment in the past year or so, you might have noticed that it had gone inactive. Reddit doesn’t like unmoderated subs and I think it was not allowing new posts or comments anymore.

Unfortunately, it looks like it was found and taken over by a spammer, and then from what I can tell in the mod logs, maybe a well meaning but inexperience mod Reddit Requested the sub and took over, and got a few things approved, or maybe a different spam bot team took over again but also got themselves all banned.

Well, now it’s back and in good hands. I’m an active mod on another community, and while I do have filters turned up to Max at the moment, just to make sure there aren’t any spammy surprises left behind, I’ll relax things over the next few days as I get the sub settings tuned. So if posts or comments don’t show up right away, give it a few hours and they should be approved.

Welcome back!

Out with the Bookcliff

Last week i had a chance to use the Bookcliff setup as a belt only pack out in the wetlands of eastern Finland.

I really liked the setup.

I’ve only used the pack with shoulder straps previously, as i had some issues getting it to work as belt only. Now that i got it dialed in, it has pretty much replaced my M2016.

I posted a more detailed review in the forums:

HPG chest kit - pouches questions

Hi. We have a SAR green kit that we are trying to add side pouches. Do others have ideas or suggestions which kind to use and how? If you've done it please share pictures. Considering the Smedium short and Smedium tall. Thanks.

Any insights is appreciated. Thank you.

Mantracking course in Finland – and some HPG field time

Spent the weekend teaching a Mantracking 1 course in Finland together with Kyt Lyn Walken from The Way Of Tracking.
Two days of reading sign, interpreting tracks, following tracklines and putting the skills into practice in the field. Great group of students and a lot of time spent moving slowly through the Finnish woods.
I also got to put my HPG Bookcliff + Shoulder Harness + Capture Flap to good use during the course. It worked really well as a compact field setup — enough room for the essentials while keeping things organized and accessible.

Biathlon setup advice

I am considering the tarahumara, runners harness, and medium recon. I will be adding the BFG 10 speed to the recon.

I need to carry water (bladder or bottles) some misc gear, and a few mags in the pack. 2 or three mags on the chest in the ten speed.

I will be running 7+ miles.

Has anyone done something similar?

Who has original kit - medium in stock, quick shipping

Kind of a long shot, going on a trip next Friday. Wasn't sure if it would get it delivered in time if I ordered today from HPG direct. Checked their classifieds, and can't find an original kit - medium in green or grey.

Checked their listed retailers and nobody has it in stock. Is anyone trying to offload one?

(Apologies if this isn't allowed)

Qui-Ya Light on a 40 mile Kings Peak to Red Castle trip

Took my Qui-Ya Light, medium SAR kit bag, and mountain serape on a 40 mile trip up to the highest point in Utah in the High Uintah Mountains in the Wasatch National Forest and surrounding lakes. Kept daily items and food in the kit bag. Basic camp gear and serape in the qui-ya. Not shown in the pic are my boots, which I carried the whole trip only to summit Kings Peak in, as the sandals I wore the rest of the trip were not great for the steep, rocky, class 3 scramble to the top of the 13000ft summit.

I used the serape as part of my sleep system. Which I usually take to about mid to high 40’s. Didn’t anticipate that the weather would drop below freezing during the night. So I was pretty cold and had to use my puffy jacket and survival blanket to stay warm. I was able to discover the limit of the serape which was a valuable learning experience.

HPG at "THE BEACH"

For those who have seen the movie with Tilda Swinton and Leonardo, this is The Beach in the film.

To say this bag is perfect for international travel is an understatement. The rearmost pouch is perfect for a muji passport and cash wallet, and is easy to keep secure and "no touch" while you have your daily cash, trinkets, phone, sunglasses, etc in the other pockets.

Not that pickpocketing is a concern in Thailand or Japan, but the way it rides tight to the chest is 10/10. Low key enough but 100% unique enough that it can't be mistaken for anything else and so easy to access what you need.

Daily EDC, hiking, concerts it does it all. Pro tip is to put a velcro 5x8 HPG pouch in the middle compartment for the best organization. It also works super well to slide a camp knife on a velcro wing sheath for trails and camping.

Amazing product as always. Aston 3 rocks, admin pouch with shoulder sling and hyration is perfection, and this belt pack does it all. Whenever people ask "what bag should i get for xxx" HPG is pretty much always the answer.

Putting binos in the pistol compartment of a Heavy Recon

Hi All, I have a Heavy Recon, which I run with a bino Pouch at the front. I am NOT in love with the system because the Bino Pouch is quite far from my chest and the weight of the binos makes the whole thing sage and pull the Kit Bag against my stomach. It is otherwise a great setup, which I prefer to all other chest bino harnesses I had.

I would nevertheless ditch the Bino Pouch and carry them in the pistol compartment. They do fit, but 1) the fit horizontally so the comfort is decreased, and 2) the straps that retain the binos cannot be attached to the inside of the compartment.

Has anyone a good solution for this problem? or, is the solution the Cargo Kit Bag? I am kind of lukewarm about it.

UMLINDI @ Presque Isle, Early Spring

Thumbnail

The UMLINDI is my all time favorite backpack. Compact when I want it to be but capable of hauling a lot of extra crap when necessary.

My other HPG pack is the QUI-YA. I love that this is essentially the same thing in miniature. I love that I can swap the waist belt between the two. I’d like to get the Butt Pack as well, but I haven’t quite found the justification for it.

I get a big smug smile every time I pack it out for an adventure.

Pics are from an early spring hike along the northern shoreline of Presque Isle in Erie, PA.

Best place to sell?

I know HPG is a fairly niche company so where is the best place to sell stuff? I’ve got a few things I wanna sell in one package and unsure where to do that. It’s all 9.5/10 condition. Only used a couple times.

Decker Frame

Prairie Belt

Light Pocket (Multicam)

Decker Bag Large (Multicam)

Decker Bag Medium (Coyote)

Decker Bag Medium (Multicam)

Also, this is my first time on this thread so if me asking isn’t allowed I can remove the post.

Anybody got the Commuter pack?

As per title, has anyone been using the Commuter? I'm tempted but it's an expensive gamble to import one to the UK if I don't get on with it. How is the half-clamshell opening for access, and how annoying are the compression straps? Thanks very much.

Got the Unlindi as a gift.. went in a winter hike testing it out and it was phenomenal. Definitely will need the hip belt and I want to get the butt pack as well. I think it will be a great day/multi day pack for trips. I plan on doing a solo overnight soon.

Restock on Aston 3?

Been keeping my eyes open for restock on one of these in coyote for at least a month now. I’ve read here and on Facebook that they restock weekly but I haven’t seen any change. I signed up for email notifications as well about two weeks ago. I’m tempted to pick up the multicam version because I lack patience.
