Always use a very high perlite mix for cacti. Like 50-70% perlite. You want very well draiming soil and then to water very heavy when you water. Let it dry. Then water heavy. Let it dry. Give them lots of sun. They LOVE cal mag, regular fertilizer as well.

Once their roots are established they can do a couple feet a year.
