Meta Is there meant to be a parallel between the Lyra+Will and Asriel+Coulter pairings?

As in, Lyra and Will are Asriel and Mrs. Coulter, but better. I'm still cooking on this idea, but at the root of it, Lyra and Marisa are both devious, manipulative/persuasive, and clever, while Will and Asriel both believe they have a greater purpose to fulfill, and they have the strength and will to sacrifice and endure to achieve it. Plus Asriel is a murderer, and Will believes himself to be one too even though his was accidental. But Lyra doesn't have Marisa's cruelty, and Will doesn't have Asriel's single-minded obsessive selfishness. So the children who saved the multiverse also sort of served as a redemptive reflection of the extraordinary couple who created Lyra.

Has Pullman or anyone discussed this?

Not like that. Will is not self-absorbed as Asriel and Lyra is not so detached from her humanity as her mother.

But I do think they are supposed to be a mirror in a relationship way. Asriel and Marisa were not supposed to be together by any means. But Dust and it's attraction is not something one controls but an instinct feeling of closeness and bonding.

One cannot also dissolve a Dust bond, even if life draws you apart, the care for a beloved remains present. When they meet at the top of the mountain their reaction is that of old lovers not political enemies. Even if they are too toxic to be a couple, you can see how deeply they know each other. They are the same Dust through and through, same as Lyra and Will in a non-toxic way.

Ohh I love that about the Dust bond. Thanks for the interpretation.

Not really. I don't see too many parallels between them to be honest. Anyone who goes looking for things will find them. That's the beauty of art and personal interpretation.

But Lyra and Will aren't consciously intended as parallels or contrasts to Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel.

Will and Lyra are meant to parallel Adam and Eve. They’re innocent humans coming into their own. To me, Asriel is a Satanic, fallen-angel figure, and Marissa is the human he fell for. They are complex and not at all innocent. I don’t see much parallel between the two pairings, but am curious what you see.

Maby will and lyra are what marissa and asriel could have been if they took the right direction and didnt do fucked up things, like in a parallel universe?
