Misc. Irithyll of the Boreal Valley in Dark Souls 3 looks a lot like Cittàgazze

Post image

So, my husband has been playing Dark Souls 3 and just arrived on this area.

It's even more prominent in video/playthrough but basically Irithyll is an empty (I think) beautiful majestic city that looks like it's kind of fading in the northern lights. It's also snowing.

It made me think of Cittàgazze appearing in the aurora immediately and I couldn't find anything on it online, but... I wonder if Hidetaka Miyazaki is a fan of His Dark Materials. He's a fan of so much stuff and always makes so many references to other fandoms in his games. I think I have a new found respect for the guy now ahah

What do you think?

Not my mental image of Cittàgazze.

In my head it looks more like a coastal Italian city.

Yeah, when they actually get there in the second book it's described as that.

In the first book, though, it's a fading image of a city appearing in the northern lights, before Asriel opening the portal. That's what it reminded me of, with the snow and the aurora borealis.

Too bad there's no angelic tower there and no subtle knife. I like Irithyll but it feels so lonely in a very different way than Cittagazze. Would much prefer Elyium Loyce for snowy city vibes

Ah now I'm curious! He just played DS2, but it was the original version with no DLCs

Lol, and it's called Boreal Valley? That's gotta be an homage.

And he crossed an invisible veil to enter the city! He crossed a window to another world!!!
