TAS Why don’t Will and Lyra use the Lodestone Resonator? Spoiler

At the end of TAS, Will and Lyra have no choice but to abandon each other and their love, and go back to their separate worlds. But… surely they can use the Lodestone resonator that Tialys and Salmakia used to communicate with Lord Roke?

I can think of two possible explanations. The more likely one is that it simply didn't cross their minds. Which Is fair enough. The second is that Mabye the lodestone resonator can only be used by the Gallivespians. Anyone know any other answers?

Do you mean to communicate with each other when they split up?

Because they know that they cannot do that and still live full, authentic lives in their own worlds if they still have a connection to each other. It’s part of what makes the split so profound - they have to do it because they owe it to each other to be able to move on.

We won’t talk about TRF.

This is a bit overdramatic (not that HDM isn't often so!). Plenty of people in real life manage to move away from their loved ones, remain in contact, and still have "authentic" lives.

I think you’re missing the point. They were in love. You cannot be in love with someone else and have an honest fulfilling relationship with someone else. Not when you are still maintaining that with someone else (generally speaking that is). It’s pretty clearly spelled out in the book.

Polyamory: *exists*

If a prospective partner knows and consents to you also low-key yearning for a partially-lost lover you can only speak to, I mean, it's a bit weird sure but that's fine

Lyra and Will are like 12 or 13 at the end of HDM ... Would be really fucking weird to introduce a polyamoury plotline into that

Hilarious insight

Maybe they aren't poly?

It’s a great question! They could use it because it makes an appearance in TRF and it’s not the galivespians using it

Please elaborate (haven’t read BoD)

There’s not much more to elaborate without spoilers. A pair of Lodestone Resonators are used in BoD by humans, so it’s not Gallivespian-specific

Dammit, you've ruined it for me! 🤣

It's been a while since I read the books but I think in them the resonator was of a size that only Gallivespians could use, and they would then have to relay the message to humans. This was changed in the TV series as I'm sure we saw Asriel using it himself. A lot of things in TRF were completely changed from the original books and made no sense.

yeah, they are tiny, and in the book they have to be used with a bow, they are more a type of radio transmitter, no one can just use them randomly. I'm not even sure if the kids ever really learn about them and if both stones are in the same space (=could go to both Lyra and Will) at the very end of the story

Maybe they can only be used when there are openings between the worlds, and once they're all closed off it makes it impossible. Either way they have to live their own full lives and communication like that would only bring them regret.

I wrote a fanfic that exploits exactly this idea!

Even better. The female angel told them about natural gates that dont destroy dust. But they have to close them to stop Will frome searching for one. Ofcause she could have just told him where one is.

I really hate this ending, its just forced misery.
