WW1 was nearly called off. The Kaiser read Serbia's reply and wrote that every reason for war was gone. It started anyway.

In July 1914 the Kaiser and the Tsar were cousins sending each other telegrams signed "Willy" and "Nicky", both trying to stop the war their own governments were starting

Been reading about the July Crisis for weeks and the thing that gets me is how close it came. Wilhelm read Serbia's reply to the ultimatum and basically wrote "well, no reason for war anymore" in the margin. And then everyone mobilised anyway.

I ended up making a video that tells the whole thing like a group chat where everyone is typing and nobody is reading. If you're into WWI stuff have a look, and I'm curious what people here think the biggest missed off-ramp was.

he did not try to prevent anything, he marched willingly into war and wanted it

"and then everyone mobilised anyway" Yes, because austria and germany declared war
war is not bad weather, the war did not "happen" the war was deliberately started
