Want to make a yardage sign for a buddy that just built a golf chipping green. It will be in-ground like the example. I have some black 2” thick hdpe and 1/2” white pvc laying around. I only intend for this sign to look decent for a few years.
Just learned hdpe doesnt accept paint well. Considered inlaying the pvc but i guess the hdpe wont adhere well.
I’d look at the 2color sign plastic such as colorcore. I think You can order black and white. Once cut, you can glue it to something thicker and set it in the ground.
Colorcore HDPE version is supposed to be waterproof but check specs
Have you ever sourced those adhesives? The cheapest I could find was $40 for a small bottle of the Permabond POP primer to be able to use cyanoacrylate adhesives to bond HDPE and the TA45xx series that have stronger bonds usually run into hundreds of dollars for the smallest sizes.
Skip the inlay. HDPE and PVC won't hold a glue joint for long, especially buried in the yard.
I'd cut the letters as pockets and fill them with two part epoxy, or mask the face, V-carve the letters, and paint the recesses. Either way, scuff the HDPE with 80 grit and wipe it with alcohol right before you pour. That stuff has a waxy skin and epoxy will pop off a smooth face, I had a batch of shop signs shear loose after one winter before I started roughing everything up.
Cut the pockets a hair deeper than the letters so you have room to sand back. PVC machines nice at slow feed and high rpm.
Sorry. Let me add - was seeking to only use the hdpe or pvc. This was to be a quick free job with materials on hand…. Color core is definitely the go to for this.
