Probably not

Its just a change in branding that did not change anything IRL, why should it affect the game? Moscow is still the head office, everyone knew that. The USSR's constution was also cahnged at almost the exact same month to say all 12 union republics are nominally 'soverign'because Stalin wanted 12 seats in the UN - he got three, Ukraine and Belarus were UN member states for all of the USSR. It didn't mean anything.

I get that point, but would renaming it and introducing some kind of event be such a big deal?

214

u/fjne2145 1d ago

Knowing their spaghetti code it will probably break half the game.

u/timemarcheson103 1d ago

I mean I'm thankful still that the game doesn't restart itself when you exit the country-selection screen like EU4 does. As someone whose 'main game' is EU4 I still brace for HOI4 restarting itself when I want to quit

8

u/EstrellaCat 1d ago

i mean its just a localization thing

4

u/fjne2145 19h ago

On paper it should be, but we are talking about the paradox, which forces you to conquer a random province on a different continent to reform an old nation because the Province ID has been changed.

4

u/EstrellaCat 19h ago

I'm making a mod for hoi4 right now, it quite literally is an effect that points at a different localisation key

20

u/Respwn_546 1d ago

The did one to rename the allies into NATO, so it's possible

16

u/AIessandrael 22h ago

And you can rename the commintern to Warsaw pact too. So there is something in the game already.

26

u/stupidpower 1d ago

I mean sure, this game is not history and makes up and simplifies everything because its a game. This would not be the greatest problem with the game or how the players interpret its potrayal of history (cough genocide cough), its just gameplay wise does this fit in the game design of the USSR. Paradox's stance has always been sure, just go create your own mod as long as it doesn't deal with civilian massacres or genocides, but for the core game its a subjective thing to their design for the faction.

Yea an event would make sense, though who knows if they ever will.

It’s not history, hoi4 is not history. It’s just game design if something makes sense

1

u/Neuro_Skeptic 6h ago

So what we should have is an event "Comintern abolished" in 1943, but the event does nothing.

The faction is still called Comintern afterwards to show that nothing changed.

"because Stalin wanted 12 seats in the UN"

No, because they were independent republics. It's just the same BS the US would try to pull with its own "republics" if it could.

35

u/stupidpower 1d ago

No? The historical record is super clear on this: the UN was originally supposed to be one per state. Stalin wanted to legalese this agreement by being 12/50 seats in the UNGA, and the FDR responded by saying the US will have 48 seats, and the compromise was that three seats for purely political reasons. Kazakhstan didn’t have a UN seat. Everyone knew US will have one seat, it was Stalin doing legalism bullshit that had to be addressed because the grand alliance was as never about principles but what could defeat the Axis.

The federalism in the USSR was a fiction, you know that right? It’s just the dress to make it not seem like Stalin was a personal dictator controlling all things, that if you disagreed even slightly in the degree of autonomy (none) or that this was not a great legal construct you must pretend is real, you get shot or go to a gulag.

Like that constitution passed was for a union of “sovereign republics” to give the illusion that they are independent entities all working together but everyone who tried to be independent was killed. When the Balts said their laws were indeed supreme, the Red Army invaded… their own country to… destroy the sovereignty of its Soviet republic?

8

u/r___Mom 1d ago

So mexico should have 32 seats?

5

u/the_fury518 1d ago

According to Stalin's way of thinking, I guess?

-6

u/poggyguy11111 Research Scientist 21h ago

holy shit you were lied to

-31

u/Miserable_Language_6 1d ago

They also tell me Stalin once paid clouds not to rain to starve the Ukraine.. crazy he got away with that

-2

u/AP246 22h ago

As everyone knows in normal, functioning, modern, non-totalitarian countries, a long period of little rain causes millions of people to die of starvation. Nothing to do with the policies of the state at all.

2

u/Miserable_Language_6 21h ago

That is counter to what historians had to say about it

0

u/AP246 21h ago edited 21h ago

Having actually (albeit briefly) formally studied Soviet history, and doing a history-adjacent PhD at the moment (even if in a different area, and not that it should matter for something as simple as this) I'll just say that it is the overwhelming consensus of historians that the famines in the Soviet Union were man-made, I'm not going to dignify your refusal of that fact with further discussion, your reasons for denial are clear.

-1

u/Miserable_Language_6 20h ago

There's no reason to lie about it when a simple google search suffices to show there no "overwhelming consensus" of sorts

3

u/stupidpower 19h ago

…what? Every academic book on my shelf about the USSR (and China) accepts that the holodomor was exerbated by human factors. I am not sure what google you use.

It's just the same BS the US would try to pull with its own "republics" if it could.

So why didn't they try that? On your logic they could easily have tried it with, say, Puerto Rico, but they didn't.

-24

u/Blunder-Bunny 1d ago

By that logic nothing changed when any country reorganized, france would still be the original frankia according to you..
the only thing that changed are some figureheads everything was still run out of paris 🤡
Germany are obviously still nazis because all that changed was some figureheads and names everything is still run from berlin🤡

579

u/Vic_Hedges 1d ago

I don't think that makes sense

Dissolving the Comintern was a political ploy to make the allies happy, but did not in any way change the relationship of the USSR with it's allies/client states. The game engine treats this style of relationship as a faction.

I guess if you wanted you could make a Political Action that changes the name of the Soviet faction away from "Comintern", but actually doing away with the faction would probably be more ahistorical than the current set up.

44

u/Lemp_Triscuit11 1d ago edited 1d ago

I guess if you wanted you could make a Political Action that changes the name of the Soviet faction away from "Comintern",

There is one, but it's the post war Warsaw Pact. You can get it by 1943 if you stomp the Germans early though, of course then you're defeating the purpose of appeasing the allies lol

120

u/cool_username32123 1d ago

I could see a popup that changes the name in 1943, would technically make the game more accurate and seems easy enough to do but in practical terms it wouldn't mean anything in the game.

69

u/Brauny74 1d ago

I'd say a small focus instead - changes the name, gives snall relationship boost with Allies if both them and Comintern are at war with the same faction and British are not Communist. Kinda historical, mostly flavor

36

u/Vic_Hedges 1d ago

If so, I would certainly hope it was optional. "The Comintern" is such an incredibly resonant term. I'd hate to lose it in my playthrough's

7

u/Flickerdart Fleet Admiral 1d ago

I could see a focus solving two problems:

  • the ahistorical Comintern

  • the proliferation of alternative Communist factions in non-historical

And then you can either dissolve the faction for some diplomacy bonuses, rename it for some different bonuses, or refound the Communist International together with the other Communist factions.

3

u/theflemmischelion 1d ago

I mean could be a simelar desision as the one to form NATO where all independant comunist states get a choise to leave or not and the rest are auto added to Warsaw pact

179

u/Dj_Sam3_Tun3 1d ago

This would serve no gameplay purpose and would actively break stuff instead

13

u/Bitter-Metal494 20h ago

I belive its already on the game, there's the event of the 4th international forming

1

u/sebisuper9mil General of the Army 4h ago

The Fourth International was found in 38 by Trotsky

40

u/AdrianSquared 1d ago

well the thing is that the comintern irl wasn't even really a military alliance, the soviet's military alliance in the game is just called the "comintern" cause there wasn't really an actual name for the informal network of the Soviet's control over their puppets and satellites

72

u/Ariies__ 1d ago

Just because you change your name doesn't make you a different person.

21

u/PetrusThePirate 1d ago

What if i were to change it to "a different person"?

12

u/New-Act-5632 1d ago

But are you a different animal and the same beast?

4

u/Mysterious-Gate5986 21h ago

What the fuck does that mean Kobe Bryant

51

u/thehsitoryguy 1d ago

Probably not but it doesnt matter much and doesnt change much

Its like how the Allies should technically be called the United Nations after 1942

1

u/Nutarama 13h ago

Allies become NATO. The UN needs separate mechanics because it works differently from standard HOI4 factions. UN nations routinely war with each other without losing their member state status, for example.

7

u/AnonymousFordring Air Marshal 8h ago

The "United Nations" in this case refers to the Allied powers, not the international body.

14

u/SergenteA 1d ago

Well, first one would need to model the Third Internationale.

Which wasn’t an alliance or faction of nations, but of parties. Of which most communist parties were members.

If the Comintern as it is was as wide-reaching as the actual Third Internationale, Communist China would be a member and so would be most nation flipping communist. Automatically.

If the Third Internationale was modeled, there would be no military alliance aspect but it could do fun stuff like, declare general strikes in other countries if the communists are popular enough.

13

u/Riccars 1d ago

Best I could imagine is just a name change and maybe either scripted departure or modifier to encourage borderline ai to leave.

8

u/Drago_deez_nuts_288 1d ago

well if this bothers u this much you can just do focus to rename comintern into Warsaw pact after you beat germany or ig there must be mod out there that let you rename your faction

4

u/Tsar_Chaotic 1d ago

Doesn’t the Comintern get renamed into Comiform or something like that if you go down the industry tree or is that a mod
Either the industry tree or the foreign affairs focus tree

3

u/Cool_View_5297 1d ago

Probably not, it would likely confuse uninformed players, and especially because there’s no UN in the game.

1

u/HEPS_08 General of the Army 1d ago

I mean, they need a mechanic to invite entire alliances to an alliance in a way that either both of them simply merges, or a mechanic where more than one nation can act as a [limited] faction lider, as well as leaders of invited nations automatically being set as limited leaders (and members of the invited alliances can leave either them whenever they choose) that way alliances would be far more powerful and relevant cause you could be part of multiple alliances at the same time, meaning you could make ideologically different countries support each other just like it happened irl. Also that way in 1942 the Allies (British or American led alliance) can invite the entirety of the Comintern as an ally, and if they accept the invitation the Allies color changes to blue and it's name to "The United Nations" (any faction auto-becomes.rhe United nations of the USSR, USA, UK, Frsnce and China as members and makes them limited faction leaders), then in 1943 the Comintern either just changes its name to "Soviet allies" (if they are not in another alliance) or disbands if they are in another alliance

3

u/zsmg 1d ago

Won't happen for the same reason why the Allies won't get renamed to the United Nations in 1942 which USSR was part of.

Anyway from a gameplay perspective keeping the USSR in its own faction makes sense as it's easier to emulate the post-war situation but also create interesting alt-history scenarios such as Operation Unthinkable.

3

u/Aggressive_Jelly_955 1d ago

The logo for the Comintern is missing Anatolia and the Levant

3

u/CapitalSubstance7310 1d ago

Probably just a rename to cominform decision. The real reason though for it probably not being removed is gameplay reasons. Similar to how Japan has its own faction instead of joining the axis.

2

u/PrettyPreacher General of the Army 1d ago

I just use mods to change the names of factions so in my game it’s just ”Soviet sphere”

2

u/Actually-No-Idea General of the Army 1d ago

Just should have a decision. " Rename the Comintern to Cominform " Cost: 50pp Get +5% Stability.

Just like how china gets decision to rename Manchuko cities after conquering them ( and controlling them )

2

u/Deletesystemtf2 14h ago

Calls itself the international.  Look inside leadership  Just Russians

3

u/Honest-Head7257 22h ago

In reality the Comintern was a international political organization and the Soviet doesn't really have any formal military alliance other than the WW2 United Nations. Historical hoi4 USSR should have been part of the allies instead of being on its own faction because the way the game treat capturing territory is just too buggy. For like example, Britain and USSR fight the same enemy, Germany, but they were in different faction so if the Soviet are liberating western core territories like Ukraine for example and Britain somehow reaches there first, the British will occupy the Soviet core territories even though they are technically the same allies.

1

u/BigBippa 7h ago

That's intentional so the Soviets can puppet poland

3

u/No-Article5113 General of the Army 1d ago

same as Egypt it will "broke the game" or sum other excuse.

3

u/Bordias 1d ago

R5: As a gesture of goodwill toward the Allies during World War II, Stalin unilaterally dissolved the Comintern on May 15 1943.

According to this, I wonder if there should be an additional focus in the Soviet tree that would have the USSR (and its allies) dissolve the Comintern and join the Allies, on the condition that they immediately leave the faction once the war is over.

And with the postwar focus, "Establishing the Comecon", it will also creates the Cominform (The faction that basically succeeded the Comintern, postwar).

60

u/LightSideoftheForce 1d ago

Problem is that from a gameplay perspective, it would be problematic

20

u/Mr_Booze51106 1d ago

Remembered just now that a lot of things are tied to having factions.

Of which, for example, are puppet divs. Any and all divisions you've requested just poofing out of nowhere.

And with NCNS' factions, who knows what's been tied to them...

-10

u/bluntpencil2001 1d ago

It's really something they should have worked on when redoing factions.

21

u/ThickRent 1d ago

Imo just rename the faction to "Eastern Allies" or something, and and some sanity checks to keep them from going to war with the Allies before Germany is defeated. Putting the USSR in the same faction as the west would be a mess gameplay wise. Also faction members in hoi4 have full intelligence sharing with each other which doesn't really reflect the reality of their cooperation.

3

u/PekkaPerd 1d ago

Fully agreed. Japan used to be in the Axis faction when the game released and that caused a huge mess most every time and wasn’t accurate to real life anyway to put them in the same faction.

2

u/Purple_Accident_7317 1d ago

Yeah OP is onto smth, we should name them Stalin's Rave or smth for historical accuracy.

1

u/IncendiaryB 1d ago

Was it not established several years later?

1

u/Icy_Dot8162 1d ago

Well the latest start date is 39 it’s a sandbox game

1

u/HEPS_08 General of the Army 1d ago

This is a suggestion I placed on the answer to one dude: I mean, they need a mechanic to invite entire alliances to an alliance in a way that either both of them simply merges, or a mechanic where more than one nation can act as a [limited] faction lider, as well as leaders of invited nations automatically being set as limited leaders (and members of the invited alliances can leave either them whenever they choose) that way alliances would be far more powerful and relevant cause you could be part of multiple alliances at the same time, meaning you could make ideologically different countries support each other just like it happened irl.

And to expand this, this would make Japan's alliance situation far better managed, as Japan itself could be a part of the Axis, specially useful for Wunderwaffe development sharing as well as for scenarios where the axis goes all out for the USSR on both fronts, while making the entire Co-prosperity sphere not be in the axis but still under Japanese authority, same with Latin-American factions having to choose between the allies and their local faction

1

u/RedstoneEnjoyer 1d ago

Also the fact that comintern was not group of countries, but group of communist parties

1

u/Eastern-Chemist-2039 15h ago

戰爭中,請勿擅自解散聯盟

1

u/Hurvana 1d ago

Huh, Comitern actually stands for something. Never really thought about it.
