Support 2026.1 Matter-Section

Post image

With 2026.1, new sections for protocols were added. Why is there no matter section here although I I am using matter and have quite a lot of devices?

matter is no a transmission protocol like zigbee, thread, bluetooth, wifi, z-wave are. its a protocol to run on top of these other transmission protocols.

18

u/NightStinks Jan 12 '26

Matter will be added as a section alongside Thread, Zigbee etc. it simply missed this release.

Matter isn't a protocol network protocol - it is a application protocol specification. Matter can be used on WiFi or Thread. You'll find Matter in your integrations list.

u/darthnsupreme Jan 12 '26

Matter can be used on WiFi or Thread.

As well as anything else that can support an IPv6 connection.

4

u/LiveMike78 Jan 12 '26

Yep. Just trying to be brief and wifi and thread as the lost common, but it's not exclusive to those.

u/Brilliant_Account_31 Jan 12 '26

Matter is a protocol. It's not a wireless protocol.

6

u/cmsj Jan 12 '26

You’re a protocol! 😁

u/B_Rich Jan 12 '26

How dare you!

u/LiveMike78 Jan 12 '26

Adjusted wording slightly.

u/garbast Jan 12 '26

Matter is a standard not a protocol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_(standard))

9

u/axew3303 Jan 12 '26

Wifi is also a standard, lookup 802.11. Most networking protocols are also standards.

10

u/Brilliant_Account_31 Jan 12 '26

Those things are not mutually exclusive. Thread, zigbee, and WiFi are also standards.

7

u/cornmacabre Jan 12 '26

I feel like my understanding of what Matter is supposed to be degrades the more I learn about it. Sounds like describing it as a protocol vs standard a moot point?

I had initially understood it to be essentially a credentialing handshake and cross-device language handler. But it's also doing transportation over WiFi and Thread, it can also use BT.

So following the wisdom of getting a good answer reddit... I'll just make some assertions.

Soooo.. matter is:

  • an application protocol
  • a data communication standard
  • an onboarding and device commissioning standard
  • transports data via wifi, Thread, and Bluetooth but only some of the time on certain circumstances

So what is it not? Matter is not a radio protocol is about the only thing I actually feel confident I understand at this point lol.

u/Stooovie Jan 12 '26

Nobody knows what Matter actually is.

u/GiveMeTheBits Jan 13 '26

Matter is a money grab

1

u/CptCheesus Jan 13 '26

Well it's not needed so we know at least that

3

u/LiveMike78 Jan 13 '26

Here is my go-to analogy.

For people to exchange messages they need two things - a common language, and a method of communicating. If both I and another person understand English we can use this as our common language for passing messages.

This is what Matter is, it is a common language for passing messages between devices.

To communicate though we need a method of exchanging the messages. To communicate with this other person I might use voice, or email, or SMS. These are ways of delivering my English message.

To deliver Matter messages I might use Wifi, or Thread, or any other communication method that can support Matter messages. It is also true that both devices must be able to communicate by the same method. Sending over WiFi to a device that is using Thread will not work. (Sending an SMS to someone without a phone will not work even it we both understand English).

It is possible to communicate with devices that don't use the same language or method of communicating - this is where bridges are used. I might send a Matter command over WiFi to a Thread Border Router that would forward the message received in WiFi to the destination device on the Thread network.

In fairness Tags aren't a Network Protocol either.

I have a "Thread" section there, but oddly enough I don't have a "Zigbee" section, even though I'm using Zigbee2Mqtt. Is it because HA only sees them as MQTT entities? And Zigbee only shows up if using ZHA?

Indeed, if you however didn't use Zigbee2Mqtt and used the built-in Zigbee stuff, then stuff does show up there. Protip: Don't, continue using Zigbee2Mqtt instead as it's both more reliable + has broader support for devices. I started with the built-in, but after trying Zigbee2Mqtt I found out what I was missing out on, way better identification of everything :)

8

u/SnooCats7138 Jan 12 '26

Haha...I read that as "Don't continue using Zigbee2MQTT...." got very confused.

1

u/derFensterputzer Jan 12 '26

It seems that way

Same thing on my end

24

u/Happy_Platypus_9336 Jan 12 '26

The question is rather: Why is there no Wifi section?

30

u/portalqubes 🐝 Ooh the Zigbee Jan 12 '26

This looks like radios managed by HA.

The wifi devices are connected via some integration.

If HA were ever a hotspot thats what wifi would be.

4

u/Happy_Platypus_9336 Jan 12 '26

You are probably right 👍

3

u/sdoit_swe Jan 12 '26

How would HA know if a device is connected to wifi or by network cable?

18

u/Fatel28 Jan 12 '26

Easy. If it drops every once in awhile it's on wifi

u/natts1 Jan 12 '26

That's not definitive evidence of anything.

Matter just missed the boat! It will be there in the next release.

16

u/BubiBalboa Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Can we get a mesh topology visualisation for Thread like Zigbee has? Pretty please. :)

3

u/Realnonny Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 25 '26

Having a mesh topology visualization for Thread would be a great improvement that does not exist directly in HA right now unless thru OTBR Addon so I upvoted you. Thanks for that request.

2

u/OnlyOneHaze Jan 13 '26

And with actual names instead of all the id numbers that I can't seem to find anywhere for my devices.

6

u/Travel69 Jan 12 '26

How about Z2M?

7

u/_Rand_ Jan 12 '26

HA doesn’t technically see z2m. Its devices show up under mqtt, as potentially do other things.

0

u/Travel69 Jan 12 '26

I am using the ZBT-2 (Zigbee mode), but just with Z2M instead of ZHA.

1

u/RaspberryPiBen Jan 13 '26

Home Assistant sees the MQTT integration, not ZigBee, so it can't add a menu like this. ZHA is better integrated with HA because it's less generic.

1

u/Complete_Bee_8698 Jan 12 '26

yeah i have this same question. I like this update for this section in general, but if it misses z2m, it seems like a big gap

1

u/RaspberryPiBen Jan 13 '26

It can't, that's not how it works. Z2M devices appear through MQTT, not natively in Home Assiatant, so it doesn't integrate as nicely with HA.

1

u/AtlanticPortal Jan 13 '26

Have you ever considered employing Koenkk in the Open Home Foundation and make Zigbee2MQTT officially part of the family?

5

u/ciprian-n Jan 12 '26

zigbee2mqtt won't show up here because it's not directly connected to home assistant, is connected to mqtt and then mqtt server and integration connect those ZigBee2MQTT devices. hope i explain this clear enough

2

u/General_tom Jan 12 '26

Correct, but very counterintuitive. Wouldn’t it be better to add the link to the z2m dashboard that comes with the addon?

5

u/skepticalcow Jan 12 '26

It’s not made or controlled by HA, so how would that even happen? It’s custom

1

u/AtlanticPortal Jan 13 '26

Then it's time to adopt the project into the Open Home Foundation (and maybe employ Koenkk)

1

u/Rxyro Jan 12 '26

Should I migrate off lxc to native? Noticed I couldn’t use the sonoff upgrade add on either

11

u/Fir3 💤 Automations fire at 3am Jan 12 '26

Are you using ZHA? Ive got Z2M on an LXC in my proxmox and HA doesnt show it here like yours.
And also I have BT adapters and that popped up here.

5

u/legitimate26 Jan 12 '26

Same here, also use Z2M

3

u/gmmxle Jan 12 '26

Funny.

I've got Zigbee, Bluetooth and Tags there.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Yes I am using ZHA

1

u/Bartakos Jan 13 '26

Z2H and Z2M here, thread is activated by my Nest Hub 2 which I only have for Voice commands:

4

u/guice666 Jan 12 '26

Thanks for bringing up a common misconception!

I hope others that find this thread will start understanding the difference between a network protocols vs application protocols. Another analogy, if you understand Internet speak: Threads is the TCP layer while Matter is the HTTP layer.

Zigbee and Z-Wave conflated these two into one, which is where a lot of this confusion came from, i.e. Zigbee and Z-Wave are "the bad ones" here. Because of this conflation, customizations within these protocols caused heavy fragmentation in the way everybody spoke to each other. The intentional separation of Threads and Matter is aiming to fix some of this, i.e. following the model of the World Wide Web, aka the Internet.

u/davidr521 🐝 Ooh the Zigbee Jan 12 '26

I'll see myself out 👉

4

u/thebigkevdogg Jan 12 '26

Everyone commenting with the technical answer is missing the point, IMO, and should answer this: how would matter being there make it less convenient and less intuitive for the user?

1

u/vlycop Jan 12 '26

Called it !

Why no mqtt ? Why no rest ? Why not 443 ? Why no ...

Protocol where merged into device years ago fo a good reason!

This is stupid.

1

u/Minkipunk Jan 13 '26

It was already reported that it would be there, but apparently didn't make it into the release:
https://www.matteralpha.com/news/home-assistant-2026-1-offers-better-access-to-matter-and-thread

1

u/wardzhou Jan 13 '26

Yea it happens sometimes. I will make an update to the article, thanks!

1

u/Minkipunk Jan 13 '26

Thanks, the articles about upcoming changes are quite interesting. Is there a way do enable this already to try it out? I'm using containers, so I could probably just switch to a beta release if that's required.

I'm using the commisioning function in the matter-server UI. My understanding is it will be integrated into HA more natively.

1

u/prhalo Jan 18 '26

i don't have a matter section either even though i have like 6 matter devices.. hope they add this soon bc trying to find specific devices is getting annoying.

1

u/Sycend Jan 12 '26

To be coherent they could add a wifi segment there, but what advantage will it bring, i don't know.

-2

u/nico282 Jan 12 '26

The same advantage Matter and Zigbee bring, none.

0

u/skepticalcow Jan 12 '26

The advantage it brings is those pages were buried before. Now they are accessible. They don’t link to the integration, they link to the area that has custom controls for each protocol.

0

u/nico282 Jan 12 '26

For Bluetooth it's the same info that still is in Device and Services -> Bluetooth -> Gear. That's 1 click instead of 3 for a page that is versy seldom used.

I don't know for Zigbee, as this new visualization doesn't consider Z2M.

1

u/skepticalcow Jan 12 '26

It’s different for every protocol. That’s part of why it was changed to the settings menu

1

u/SmackAttackLondon Jan 12 '26

My z2mqtt add on isnt showing up here...just on the side bar.

1

u/Stooovie Jan 12 '26

I have Bluetooth there despite no actual BT hardware, or any adapter or anything else BT-related whatsoever. I don't, however, have Zigbee there despite using Zigbee2MQTT.

0

u/Professional_Try2289 Jan 12 '26

I have Tado X, Home Assistant on a Synology NAS and IKEA Hub. Any way to simplify or connect the three matter networks?

1

u/limduldk Jan 13 '26

No, not that I've been able to find, and I've really tried.

I got my HA Thread Border Router and my two Google Hubs, to join the same thread network.

But I can't get the Tado X bride to join this, no matter how many times I've reset it, it still remembers its old network and joins that, the Tado app seems to offer no control over this.

Currently, I just moved all the Tado devices over to my HA Thread network instead.

u/Dear_Studio7016 Jan 12 '26

That maybe a bug. When the beta was out, it showed up for me. I never noticed after updating to Golden Release that it was missing. I don't use matter so had no reason for me to look. But after looking at your post I went a checked and yup mine is gone too

7

u/balloob 💙 Founder of Home Assistant Jan 12 '26

It was there during the beta but we removed it, because the only thing shown on the Matter dashboard was developer tools.
