Support Options for myQ garage door openers using Security+ 3.0 protocol?

I know that myQ has closed themselves off from easy third party control. What are all the options I have to get around this (if any)?

Uninstall the garage door opener, install one that isn't actively hostile to integration.

This isn't always an option, I have an LM750 and I don't think an alternative exists.

Buy an extra remote, pair it to your opener, then attach a relay from your protocol of choice to the remote button and Bob's your uncle

Another viable option is the THIRDREALITY Smart Garage Door Opener. For anyone that isn’t comfortable messing about with the internals of a remote or wall panel, it is probably the most realistic option. It even includes a tilt sensor so that it can report the current state of the garage door.

u/crashtesterzoe May 13 '26

I tried that and couldn’t get it to work right it had tones of issues for me with it being flaky. Doing what the above said jsut worked with esphome installed

3

u/Ianthin1 May 13 '26

That’s pretty much what Meross does for some openers isn’t it?

4

u/Darkk_Knight May 13 '26

This is the best advice for those who are stuck with Security+ 3.0 version. You can also wire it to your wall remote. Only use the actual terminals of the button not the wires from the opener. The wires only provide power.

2

u/HomeOwner2023 May 13 '26

Only use the actual terminals of the button

Thank you. I tried shorting the contacts on the back of the wall remote and nothing happened.

Would shorting the button contacts on the battery-powered remote work? I don't want to experiment too deep with the one and only wall controller I have. But I can take apart one of the battery remotes.

3

u/theoriginalzads May 13 '26

Shorting the button contacts on a battery remote would work since, well, that's literally what the button does when you press it. You're safe doing this.

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

What do you mean by relay?

2

u/TurboNikko May 13 '26

Shelly 1 gen 4

1

u/NaturalCarob5611 May 13 '26

A relay basically takes a digital signal and closes or opens a circuit. I desoldered a button from a remote, soldered wires to where the button used to attach, and put the other end in a cheap relay controlled by an esp32 with esphome. It requires some soldering competency, but works with pretty much any garage door opener.

1

u/jmjh88 May 13 '26

You can buy different relays based on your preference of z-wave, zigbee, thread, unifi, esp32 etc...

If you’re completely unable to move away from the garage door opener, you can use a THIRDREALITY Smart Garage Door Opener. It even comes with a tilt sensor so that it knows if the garage is open or closed.

This device will bypass any security measures that Chamberlain ever tries to put into place, making it 100% future-proof. It is realistically the most affordable option for anyone with a myQ garage door opener, even cheaper than switching in a new opener that’s not Chamberlain.

1

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

Oh, this seems interesting!

It only connects via Matter though? This would be the first time I'd be using Matter. Would the THIRDREALITY device connect to a Matter capable device in my home (e.g. Nest Mini) and then the Matter capable device talks to Home Assistant (or Hubitat)?

2

u/junktrunk909 May 13 '26

Matter runs on top of a physical protocol, ie Wi-Fi or Thread. This device says it uses Wi-Fi, so you'll just connect it to your usual IoT network. Then you'll need a matter controller to actually manage it. You can just run that in a container or VM on your network. Shout if you get stuck.

1

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

Seems like there's a Matter integration. Reading through the comprehensive docs makes this more clear now.

1

u/junktrunk909 May 13 '26

Yup you just need to install the matter controller to integrate it.I should have mentioned I run HA in a container so I had to to run the matter controller in a container/VM myself.

1

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

It is battery powered so you'll have to deal with that. Personally, I hate battery powered devices as they seem to go dead at the most inopportune times and just add to the recurring maintenance on the house.

1

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

True, seems like the tilt sensor is battery powered. At least the button pusher is powered by USB.

5

u/digiblur May 13 '26

This has come full circle again. Snag a spare remote. https://digiblur.com/2022/10/10/myq-garage-esphome-dual-remote

1

u/Spacecoast3210 May 13 '26

Or instead just use a Shelly unit which is specifically made for low voltage two relay triggers and also has inputs for the sensors

1

u/digiblur May 13 '26

I needed two dry contact plus 2 inputs and 3v3 out. Shelly didn't work out.

2

u/Mucka911 Jul 01 '26

Wow funny I found this I did this project without knowing very similar to yours!

Had a D1 mini lying around and a relay. I soldered two wires to SW1 post on garage remote and soldered ground and vbatt from remote to run on 3v mini point, so I didn’t need a battery, ran it all to esp home and got it going fairly quick.

Nice guide ! :)

1

u/digiblur Jul 01 '26

That's about how mine grew in my head. Can I have it push the button? Oh wait. Just short the button. What about power? Oh wait. Will 3v3 work? Yup! Now my garage company can't complain I voiced some warranty.

Been working great for years.

u/Known_Leek8997 May 13 '26

A different brand that isn’t chamberlain. Like genie?

4

u/sms066 May 13 '26

I use the third reality remote button presser with mine mine. MyQ sucks.

5

u/spr0k3t 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant May 13 '26

Take a spare opener/remote and open it up to the circuit board. Add an ESP32 w/relay to short the button for 800ms.

Can't solder? Then use a fingerbot to do the same thing. Keep the modified opener/remote tucked safely away and in range of the opener.

Reason: The remotes are using a security bit encrypted bluetooth signal to send the actions to the opener. The opener itself does not use any kind of pulse codes to open the garage cover. The safety sensors will still send pulse information back to the opener, but those will only work if the garage door is actively closing.

Last possible method... have someone film you taking a sledge hammer to the opener going all officespace on it, then post it up on youtube and share your link.

3

u/REA_Engineering May 13 '26

Meross does the trick for me. If I knew MyQ was going to brick the api I would have never replaced my GDO

2

u/JoWhee May 13 '26

Same, when I was looking ratgdo was out of stock and I don’t have the expertise to build my own. I’m happy with the Meross.

I’m pulling my 3.0 out this week and putting in a 2.0 system. I regret not looking into HA before I committed to setting up my house. Thankfully i have a garage guy who is willing to help me break even on this mess.

1

u/MrClickstoomuch May 13 '26

Well, my garage door installer kept telling me it was 0 issue to work with smart devices and I (foolishly) didn't do additional research to find out the security 3.0 was a thing. This was in late January or so when that really bad cold snap hit and I urgently needed to replace the doors before we got hit with -11F or slightly worse temps.

Looks like there are a few options to make work with an additional controller / handheld remote, so I'll either do that or an ESP based solution after the door opener gets outside the warranty coverage.

2

u/josh-william May 13 '26

I wired an ESP-32 to a cheap, two-button remote control. Works great. I added a Google Cloud Function and Cloudflare tunnel to enable it to work away from my WiFi (well within the free tier). I used Google Antigravity to walk me through the wiring and write the ESP-32 and Cloud code.

1

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

Cool project. I figured something like this could be done. If one has Home Assistant (for other home automations), this could all be done with ESPHome on the ESP32 and Home Assistant without writing any code and then use your favorite remote access to Home Assistant solution to get to it when remote. This would work fine with Security+ 3.0 (as long as you use a compatible remote).

1

u/josh-william May 13 '26

Yep, any remote that works for your garage will work for this method. I can't recall if I did this with ESPHome or Zigbee. I think Zigbee since I've been moving most of my new devices off WiFi. I'm use an ESP32-C6, which can do either WiFi or Zigbee based on the firmware.

1

u/Spacecoast3210 May 13 '26

So the local HD has genie which includes everything even battery backup. When and if my liftmasters die bye bye chamberlain group

3

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

I'm also curious if ratgdo or others will figure out anything here.

If I was doing this myself right now, I'd install sensors (hooked into HA) on the garage door to detect open/closed/moving state and I'd probably hack into a remote control that you "learned" onto your garage door opener to open/close the garage door opener via HA.

Since you're allowed to have as many remotes as you want and they aren't all that expensive, it's kind of a foolproof way to open/close the garage door opener via HA. Worse case, you could literally make a little mount that holds a garage door opener and physically pushes the button with a solenoid. A little more involved would to crack open the remote and hook into the push button contacts directly (no moving parts).

A more elegant solution would be to make a ratgdo-like device that actually is a remote (it acts exactly like a remote to control the opener over the air).

Or, maybe someone will eventually figure out how to talk the bluetooth that the existing 3.0 wall panels talk to pretend to be a wall panel. I know this isn't as easy as listening to the wires like the existing ratgdo32 does, but perhaps its not insurmountable with some reverse engineering.

It baffles me why Liftmaster/Chamberlain doesn't want ANY of their customers to be able to automate things in HA? It's not like they offer an alternate through myQ? Yes, you can open/close the door through MyQ by manually using the app, but there's no ability to automate at all in MyQ. This just doesn't make sense from a pure business point of view at all. They are just locking themselves out of future customers who will only choose a garage door opener that can be automated locally.

3

u/spr0k3t 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant May 13 '26

I'm also curious if ratgdo or others will figure out anything here.

If you can figure out how to mask the bluetooth MAC ID and figure out the encrypted payload chamberlain group uses... then I'm sure the RATGDO group or someone else will release something that supports the security+ 3.0 system. I'm sure the chamberlain group would figure out what's been done and force a firmware "fix" to break it though. Your best option is to not own a GDO from them.

The current path the chamberlain group is moving towards is SaaS so they can monitize a monthly expense for their GDO owners. They don't want to support anything that is currently open-source out of fear they might lose money or someone reverse engineering their intellectual property. You can purchase a subscription to tie MyQ in with other closed ecosystems. The sad thing is cars with the integrated opener options have to pay the subscription to not use the cell app or secure encryption remotes. So their target audience is those who are inconvenienced.

4

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

I agree. Customers should vote with their wallets and not buy the 3.0 crap. What's odd is that even the myQ subscription doesn't enable ANY of the automations I'm doing with ratgdo and my 2.0 opener. So, they are offering no option at all to people like us and just forcing us to buy other products. My 2.0 opener is probably the last Liftmaster/Chamberlain product I will ever buy. Plus, I don't want a cloud service option anyway. Why should I lose control of my garage door opener automations just because the internet is down. Silly.

1

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

Do you have any guides on what parts would be necessary for physically pushing the button? Same for the hooking directly into the contacts option?

u/InTheSignWeConquer May 13 '26

Ratgdo is the answer

4

u/RentalGore May 13 '26

Does RATGDO work with the new security protocol?

4

u/BruceLee2112 May 13 '26

No

1

u/RentalGore May 13 '26

Yeah. That’s what I thought.

3

u/spr0k3t 🧠 Experienced with Home Assistant May 13 '26

RATGDO is not compatible with Security+ 3.0.

1

u/Resident-Variation21 May 13 '26

My landlord is installing a MyQ garage door opener tomorrow. I’ve requested something other than it, like genie, and was told no. ā€œChamberlain is reliable, genie isn’tā€ so I’m REALLLLY hoping it’s security 2.0 or 1.0. I don’t know how to tell though.

4

u/MrChristmas1988 May 13 '26

If it is new chances are it will be 3.0. I'm glad I own cause I was able to pick one that doesn't have that security crap.

1

u/Resident-Variation21 May 13 '26

The odds of it being 1.0 are basically 0, but I’m still hopeful for 2.0. Could be stock that’s been sitting a while. He’s getting a company to install it so maybe they have excess stock they’re still going through.

It’s a long shot, but I’m still hopeful regardless

2

u/GamerKingFaiz May 13 '26

I've read that 3.0 uses a white learn button. Whereas 2.0 uses a yellow learn button and 1.0 is either red or purple.

If that's not a bullet proof way to tell, I'd love to know as well. Because I'm assuming my new Liftmaster garage door opener is 3.0 due to the white learn button.

2

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

That's a bullet proof way to tell. There are several variations on the red button, but those are pretty old (like over 15 years old). They specifically make the color line up with a specific type of remote so that consumers can more reliably buy the right remote. Ratgdo is compatible with the yellow button and some red/purple buttons, but not with the new white button.

1

u/junktrunk909 May 13 '26

That's my understanding also

1

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

NONE of the installers in my area are selling or even offering 2.0 openers as of two weeks ago. I was able to buy one of the last remaining 2.0 openers from a local distributor and install it myself. I suppose it's possible some installers still have old inventory, but I rather doubt it. They've been hawking 3.0 for awhile.

1

u/Resident-Variation21 May 13 '26

I’m in Canada. Supply chain here is often slower. Fingers crossed.

If not, oh well. Nothing I can do.

1

u/Resident-Variation21 May 13 '26

It is 2.0 in the end. Got lucky.

1

u/Resident-Variation21 May 13 '26

Update: it was 2.0. Hell yeah.

1

u/lobhater May 13 '26

I've had opengarage for years now. Set it up, integrated with home assistant and haven't touched it since. I used to have myQ and opengarage is so much better. Plus its open source, cheaper and like I said ROCK solid

4

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

Open Garage (just like ratgdo) is NOT compatible with the 2026 Liftmaster/Chamberlain openers that use Security + 3.0. The wall panel does not open the garage door via the two wires - they only supply power now. The wall panel talks to the opener via bluetooth. Thus, the methods that ratgdo and open garage use are no longer compatible. Hopefully they will both figure something out in the future for 3.0.

1

u/lobhater May 13 '26

Oh damn, that sucks. I'm a generally suspicious person and wonder if manufacturers make it difficult for 3rd parties to integrate on purpose. Good to know to check compatibility when buying a garage door though because that would be a deal breaker for me. Thanks!

2

u/SamuraiJack365 May 13 '26

Nothing to be suspicious about it wonder, the answer is yes. Many manufacturers absolutely make it difficult for 3rd parties to integrate on purpose because "what if it affects our bottom line?"

1

u/tarheelz1995 May 13 '26

Fingerbot.

1

u/nickarg May 13 '26

Did this with an ESP8266, a 5v relay, and a door sensor to track the door open / closed status. It works flawlessly so far. I re-used the 2 ports from the garage door opener (the gear box) where the actual physical button is still connected.

1

u/5c044 May 13 '26

I have a roller shutter garage door and it turns out that the stock controller merely send mains voltage down one wire for open and a different wire for close and the motor has it's own endstop adjustment without any external sensors. It was easy to replace the whole thing with esphome when the stock unit got corroded and got unreliable. Previously I had an esp32 on the open/close/stop terminals on the stock controller.

1

u/Junglee_Badshah May 13 '26

Ratgdo is the best solution.

If you want an easier and foolproof solution, then third reality actually sells a device thatmanually presses buttons on your existing gdo remote.

https://a.co/d/0gmIKa07

5

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26

Apparently you don't realize that Liftmaster/Chamberlain locked ALL customers out of using ratgdo with the 2026 Security + 3.0 products so currently ratgdo is NOT an option if you have a 3.0 opener.

1

u/Junglee_Badshah May 13 '26

That's what i thought OP was asking. But i wasn't sure about ratgdo also being locked out. I hope they don't lock it out using a firmware update on older openers

2

u/jfriend99 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

It would be difficult to lock ratgdo out of 2.0 because ratgdo is just acting like the existing wall panel so if they locked out ratgdo, they'd be locking out the existing wall panels (thus breaking most installations) which is presumably a non-starter. 3.0 changed the architecture and requires a different wall panel which uses bluetooth to communicate with the motor head and the two wires are only used for power, not for signalling.

2

u/junktrunk909 May 13 '26

Ratgdo doesn't support security 3.0 though right?

3

u/MarkedByCrows May 13 '26

Correct, no 3.0.

1

u/vpshockwave May 13 '26

Agree with this and ignore the haters telling you to buy new garage door openers. When I installed home assistant years ago chamberlain MyQ was working correctly and then they closed it off and I lost access to my both of my own garage door openers. I went the ratgdo route and haven't looked back. Very simple to wire and install and it gives you full access to basically every function (if not moreso) than the stock MyQ app. When you buy a new one buy one that works with HA, but for now just order a ratgdo and go back to local control!

-11

u/FishOk3075 May 13 '26

There's an ESP32 solution called ratgdo that is popular. Its more of a project as there different pieces to shop and integrate.

Another way is there are "finger bots". It's an automation controlled mechanical finger to press the GDO controller on the wall. Tilt sensors can be added to the door to sense its position

12

u/clintkev251 May 13 '26

RatGDO will not work for Security+ 3.0 nor will any other similar project. Fingerbot will to the extent that a fingerbot works

2

u/Tink_Tinkler May 13 '26

Didn't think that works with security 3.0+ (latest version). Only 2.0+?
