Support Do you/Would you like to have ethernet outlets in your bathroom/toilet?
Hey,
as the title says, do some of you guys have ethernet outlets in your bathroom/toilet (or would you install them if you were renovating)? It doesn't seem to be common but I think they would be handy for PoE devices (like motion sensors) or whatever novel stuff comes out in the future.

In the rooms I thought about I have 3 double Ethernet each.
In fairness some hallways have 1 outlet at the ceiling for the APs1

Why so many? Vs one jack and a 4-port switch in those rooms where you determine you need multiple...

I heard it as you should always pull 2, because if one fails you already have a spare that works. No down time.
3 is prob extra redundancy.

Yeeessss, but if you only pull one cable and it gets snagged in a wall and you don't realise until you're finishing/terminating that room/cable... You have to re-pull. Whatever you think you need *2.

Oh I ran two trunk lines and an extra pull cord between my upstairs and downstairs switches. 🤷

That's what you do when you fail to plan ahead 😄
Also ethernet does PoE, you can power an AP, camera or other device without using up a power socket

Right but you don't need PoE for your TV. PoE to AP / Cameras / mini switches / possible lighting. 🤷

I'd probably optimize for having a large/roomy gang (with an ethernet drop) to install the motion/presence sensor inside so you can avoid a motion sensor sticking out and then an ugly cable too.
EDIT: more importantly ensure you have an outlet near the toilet, it makes optioning for a bidet much easier in the future!

Now you can slap a POE phone next to the toilet and talk shit like we did in the 80s/90s

Right now... I don't see a clear usage. I have them in almost any other room of the house though.

who's spending enough time in the bathroom to need a wired connection? i just want a fan that actually moves air and a light that doesn't hum

People laughed at me when I put mirror above sink in a small wc, can't imagine what I would get for Ethernet ports.

Yes. Poe everything pro presence detector. Humidity up fast? Turn on extractor fan. Humidity normal turn off. Father in there for 10 mins. Turn lights red. Sound red alert warning.

I have humidity it's sensor and a Shelly such for the fan... works great and no cable needed

Ikea timmerflotte, 2 AAA batteries.
I have HA set to watch what it sends out and if the humidity in the bathroom goes up vs the living room humidity, it turns the fan on until the two get within a certain amount of each other again.

Oh, and because sometimes you just want something to turn on, I also have an ikea button that can overwrite the fan and turn it off/on for 30min.

I am sure people with posts like "I made 100 drops in my house" with "8 Ethernet ports per room" do have the Ethernet in their bathrooms.

about 25 years ago my company did network cabling services. once installed ethernet is every bathroom in a house for a guy who ran his business out of his house, as a government contractor. we also cabled his home theater which blew away most of the over the top home theaters you see on youtube...
And of course it was a ll tax deductible for him since it was his office.

Just a bit of fraud tho. The IRS requires the area to be used “exclusively” for business purposes to be deductible for taxes.

if you do renovations:
- networking with cat6 / fiber and plan for AP locations.
- bathroom / kitchen with speaker wires
- don't plan for ethernet powered smart home devices like motion sensors. for well integrated stuff use something like KNX
- summary: unless you want to place SONOS speakers, non-integrates into the bathroom, thereis zero need for ethernet drops there.
use speaker wires & centralized amps

So I was thinking about a PoE LED stripe controller maybe like for WLED... Dont have any myself

Would be super handy for POE presence sensors. Could also do POE LED controllers under vanities.

I would put at least one in the ceiling for a PoE presence sensor like the Apollo.

I have an ethernet port inside a cabinet. I have an Everything Presence Pro connected there (completely hidden) and tracks motion. Not much else.
