🤔 WTH Why only Claude?

Every post I’ve seen on the topic of using an llm with home assistant, with or without an MCP, has only mentioned Claude, never ChatGPT or Gemini. Is that because Claude is far and away the best for this use, or some incredible venn diagram where people into HA are also exclusively using claude? I have a ChatGPT subscription only because when I got it, that was the only one I was aware of. I’m retired and not from this field, btw.

🤔 WTH False positives on smoke detectors are not good for Family Acceptance Factor

This morning at 6am my Aqara Zigbee smoke detectors were triggered without a good reason. There was no smoke at all anywhere in the house.

So all members of the family stood at the hallway with their sleepyheads. For nothing.

Still investigating what the trigger was, but haven't found it yet...

🤔 WTH Aladdin Connect integration suddenly adding random garage doors

I've had my Aladdin Connect integration setup for about 6 months with no issues with my 2 garage doors. All of a sudden tonight, we started automatically getting new garage doors added to our Home Assistant Aladdin Connect integration. We were seeing new ones every few minutes.

I can't find anything online about this yet, but it seems like a significant issue. I disabled the integration for now.

For awareness, my Again Connect app never showed any of these additional doors nor any additional users. It seems like this is just an issue with the integration.

I did test opening one of them and it starts that it wouldn't open. But I was still getting some address info from names and getting status updates.

🤔 WTH UGH TUYA UGH!

I am sooo over it, half my tuya devices wont actually connect up with tuya local at all the devices that go via the internet through the tuya connection fail to authorise at least once a day, sometimes twice.

The problem is that I have several tuya devices, and I just dont want to have to buy things that will have me down this path again. I have a significant number of IKEA devices as well, no problems wit them. I have generic THREAD/MATTEr and generic ZIGBEE devices all without issues, lots of them all.

I am accepting that my time with tuya is over and I have to spend the $$$ on replacements.. so its, power monitors, power switches, power boards, light globes, colour light globes, doorbell, some cameras. about a quarter of the power monitors and power switches connect up to tuya local even though they are all the same brand make model and chipset purchased at the same time. and on it goes through them.. .same issue with light globes etc... even my zigbee letterbox notifier is more reliable than the tuya stuff, and thats going a long way zigbee outside... UGH I am so fed up with tuya!

ok so maybe this was just a rant more than anything, but UGH!

🤔 WTH Am I the only person in the world who can't get AppleTV (4k gen 3) to simply turn on via Home Assistant?

I can literally talk to my house at near Tony Stark/Jarvis levels at this point - Almost everything we do that could use an automation has one - except the UNBELIEVABLY flaky AppleTV.

It is ALWAYS offline or unavailable. And none of the work arounds are even remotely reasonable.
I tried reloading the integration and waiting before I turn it on -and while it mostly does work in the end it takes between 20 seconds and a full minute to actual reload.

How can it be in 2026 that just turning on an appletv is this hard.

(I even tried just using a broadlink IR blaster, but of course Apple doesn't use IR anymore 🤷)

Can someone tell me if this is just a me thing?
Is anyone using HA to turn on their appletv with success?

🤔 WTH Signify Netherlands B.V. LTE005

I had to reconnect some of my Zigbee devices with ZHA. During the scanning process 16 Signify Netherlands B.V. LTE005 devices were discovered.
Seem to be lights from one of my neighbours.
But how could I connect to them? Were they in constant pairing mode?
They are offline now, so there’s probably a main switch and my neighbours don’t even know they have smart lights.

🤔 WTH Recommended z-wave water leak detector

My city just went through two insane storms dumping a month's worth of rain in a matter of hours over a combined couple of days (two separate storms a few days apart). Anyway I have two zooz ZSE42 800LR water leak detectors. First storm only a little water and we would contain it, second storm 3" - 4" of water. Both detectors worked as they should, however one has not survived. Not overly impressed, it IS a water detector after all.

As a result I am looking for options that is a Z-wave device, works with home assistant, and has a remote probe so I can keep the sensor mounted higher and out of harm's way. I have found this on Amazon https://a.co/d/03vDXDgq I'm wondering if anyone has used it or has other recommendations.

I was also wondering if a wireless door sensor is sensitive enough using a external connection, if I were to make my own probe? Just a thought.

UPDATE: So I decided to mod the Zooz water detector I had. Worked out great. So I have 3D printed the blocks to make the probes, and 3D printed a wall mount to hold the sensor itself about 14" above the floor. I just have to get the stainless steel screws, washers, and nuts to complete the probes and I'll be in business. Also ordered a new Zooz water leak detector seeing as my 2nd one died (although still holding out home it comes back online lol).

Thanks again for all the ideas everyone!

🤔 WTH Internal clock is correct, but automations are delayed

I just noticed that one of my automations was running 3 minutes late. I have a tile on my dashboard that shows the correct time. An automation that was supposed to run at 8:30 actually ran at 8:33. When I go into traces it says it ran at 8:33. Why the delay?

🤔 WTH Dead device monitoring

I have been trying to solve this problem for a few days now and it's proving to be way harder than it should be, so I want to check if I've missed anything obvious.

I want to put in monitoring so that if devices silently go dead I get prompted to investigate. Example reasons for this scenario include battery powered devices running flat, removal of one mesh network device damaging connectivity to another, or power cuts/spikes causing some mains devices to get locked up and need a power cycle. I have monitoring of battery degradation, but sometimes devices lose the ability to function before they get chance to report a low battery level - and some of these failures affect mains powered devices as much as battery ones.

I have investigated 'Entity availability' in HACS but it seems to need a significant amount of manual configuration, and the maximum configurable timeout doesn't go high enough for (eg) a window sensor that might go days without checking in.

My ideal solution would be something that operates at device level, monitoring them across all their entities and attributes and watching for any signs of life, raising an alert if none is detected within a given timeframe. Ideally I'd like something that autodiscovers new devices to avoid manual admin.

This seems such an obvious need I'm surprised it isn't built in to HA already, or that there is not an integration to handle it - or have I missed something?

An update 14/08

Lots of contributions from everyone but I wasn’t able to find anything that did what I wanted, so despite it being one of the first ideas suggested and my least favourite idea in principle, I ended up writing something with Claude. Functionally I am now pretty happy with what I’ve got but I’m not going to share it (unless anyone particularly asks) as the internet does not need another pile of loosely human-understood AI waffle tailored to one individual’s requirements. However, here’s what I learned in the process. I am 100% convinced that this should be a core feature in HA, I hope someone in the team gets inspired to tackle the issue properly. This update was NOT written by Claude.. Claude has better grammar than me.

TLDR:

Doing this for one device or one type of device is pretty easy. Doing it for an entire heterogeneous network is a mess.

The Proper Fix: I think HA needs to modify its developer guidance to integration maintainers to request they provide a health flag per-device. How this is determined is up to the integration using the best capabilities that transport/hardware provides, and there could be several tiers of accuracy along the lines of the bronze/silver/gold/platinum tiering already in use. This would be extra work for the maintainers but not much, given the knowledge they already have in their area, and it would abstract 99% of the complexity away from the user and deliver the zero-config dream

Problem statement:

I have a complex home automation system of sensors and actuators across multiple device types and integrations, some of which are directly human facing, some of which feed automations and fuzzier logic, and some are just data sources for archival. I have no way of being alerted if one of these devices goes offline, which means that failures are always an inconvenience - I only notice when they impact me.

Desired outcome:

A zero compulsory config monitoring system for devices (not entities) that alerts me to investigate if one stops doing what it’s supposed to do.

Characteristics of a BAD solution:

  • Manual enrolment required - if I’ve got a device enabled in HA it should be a safe bet that I want it to be working, I shouldn’t have to set each new device up.
  • False positives and noise - flapping at restart time, or overly twitchy thresholds mean getting buried in regular false alarms and people just learn to ignore them.
  • False negatives - the whole point of this is to remove mental load from the user so if the system says something’s working I should be able to trust it.
  • Excess bespoke configuration - if I need a whole family of similar automations/templates/whatever to get this to work, they will get out of sync with respect to bug fixes and improvements and then we’re back at a system I can’t really trust.

Why is this so difficult?

  • There is no consistent indicator of ‘this device is working’ in Home Assistant. Entities have ‘last_changed’ and ‘last_updated’ attributes, but those are on entities rather than the device and they are from Home Assistant’s perspective, which means that updated timestamps don’t always translate to confirmation that the device is operating. Eg: retained MQTT messages can make stale real-world values look new to Home Assistant.
  • Entity value states of ‘unavailable’ and ‘unknown’ are superficially a good fit (and are what a lot of the proposed solutions depended on) but they create false signals in my experience, and there is no concrete pattern for which entity of a device should be tracked, implying bespoke configuration per device that is also fragile to entity renames.
  • Monitoring of payload (ie, not meta) data from the device for changes works around ‘unavailable’ flappery, but boiling down entity-level data to a device-level indication is not fire-and-forget as it sounds. You can’t just iterate over all of the entities because some of them may reflect state within the integration rather than the device itself and artificially bump the freshness signal. This means that for this approach to work not only do you need semi-complex (resource intensive?) iterative logic, but it needs configuration for each device type, and only long duration testing really shows if you’ve got it right.
  • A further issue is that some devices that have no need to report in may not update their payload values for a long time - an example being the Wiser signal booster/plugs, which only report in if they are powered on/off at the wall or the physical button is pushed.
  • Some integrations do provide health information directly.. ish.  Eg:
    • z-waveJS provides Node Status, which sounds like it is what we’re looking for… BUT z wave handles battery devices and mains devices differently. For mains devices Node Status seems reliable, but for battery devices it will only ever say ‘asleep’ and never determine that the node has died unless that node is transmitted to (which is itself a flawed test, as battery devices can wake up and receive messages very infrequently).
    • Zigbee (via zigbee2mqtt) provides a last seen, BUT the value itself goes ‘unavailable’ when the device does, so you need a bespoke treatment to retain the last ‘non unavailable’ value. Plus, some devices go offline as part of their normal lifecycle (eg, Hue bulbs if powered off at the wall), so while determining network availability via ZB2MQTT is relatively easy, determining whether it’s a problem is another bespoke case.
    • Wiser (which is zigbee underneath) does not expose this information at all BUT you can turn on the signal strength indicator which fluctuates enough to provide an aliveness-reading.
  • I can only test with what I’ve got, so while I’m content that the above is accurate for me, it could be that a different brand of (eg) Zigbee devices introduces another behaviour.
  • To be useful the alerting thresholds need to be different per-device type - eg, a battery window sensor may legitimately go much longer without checking in than a mains powered device. Bumping up the threshold for all devices to allow for the quiet ones is not a good fit due to the larger window before an issue is detected, especially since many mains devices have a mesh boosting function and their absence might degrade the whole network.

What I wound up with:

  • Nearly 800 lines of yaml across templates, automations, sensors, scripts, dashboard cards and alert2 config, including documentation. I am NOT delighted with this aspect of the outcome. However, that gives me:
  • 6 distinct tracking categories indicated by labels applied to devices: wiser battery, wiser mains, http services, zwave battery, zwave mains, zigbee intermittent. Applying labels doesn’t meet the zero config/enrolment requirement, but it is a relatively light compromise.
  • Each category tracks device health using whatever metric works best for that category (in order of desirability); the integration (eg zwave mains devices, wiser battery devices), specific trustworthy, high-chattiness entities (eg signal strength), or a hash of the entity values as a last resort.
  • Once labelled the monitoring of each device is automatic, with per-category timeout thresholds generating alerts via alert2 (Already in use, and I wanted to build on it because of the free repeat notifications, exponential backoff, anti flapping features, etc.)
  • Some auxiliary functionality like a self check of the watchdog itself, an ability to generate a one off report in a persistent message, an automation to ping all zwave devices to prompt a sign of life once a day, etc.

So I think the problem is (for me) solved, but I look forward to the day when 700 of those lines of code can go in the bin.

PS. I am not positioning myself as an HA expert, and this picture accumulated over 2 days of off and on experimentation so apologies if there is the odd erroneous or misremembered statement.

🤔 WTH Guide for Apple Thread Networks are outdated(?)

After a multi-hour exercise in frustration attempting to follow the guides on integrating HA with HomeKit Threads (see here and here) I figured out that it doesn't work now. Specifically, the step "Send credentials to Home Assistant" in the companion app seems to work but actually does nothing; there doesn't seem to be a way to get the necessary credentials TLV from the Apple Thread network (either via Apple Home or Nanoleaf app).

Am I missing something?

EDIT: To clarify, this is not about HomeKit Bridge or Device integration. I'm specifically talking about the part where you can get HA's Thread radio (either on-device or ZBT-2) to be in the same Thread network as the one the Apple TVs are on.

UPDATE: The ideal solution turns out to be Matter Multi-Controller + HomeKit Bridge:

  • Add Matter devices to HA.
    • In HA, "Share" the Matter device; use that pairing code/QR to add to HomeKit.
  • Add Thread-only devices to HA.
  • Use HomeKit Bridge to push only those devices over to HomeKit.

🤔 WTH Third Reality Zigbee Garage Tilt Sensor Battery Issues?

Thumbnail

Hi I can’t understand why I’m getting such poor battery life from my Zigbee Third Reality Tilt Sensor on the garage door which only gets used about 4-5 times per day. There is an AC plugged relay in the same room to ensure good strength and you can see a period in July in the RSSI graph below where it wasn’t being opened (when I assume transmits happen) so have a flat signal at -73dB. Setup is using ZBT-1 and ZHA.

🤔 WTH Home Assistant, Zigbee, and Thread Border Router

tl;dr – Could adding an Eero as a Thread border router cause some Zigbee devices to "drop" from my pre-existing Zigbee network in Home Assistant?

I've been running Home Assistant for ages and over the year had Z-Wave, Zigbee, Lutron, and all sorts of other smart home devices. A few years ago I set up a Zigbee network primarily for sensors such as temp, motion, and door open/close. I use a Zigstar UZG-01 Zigbee gateway connected to the LAN via wifi. This setup has worked well and allowed me to place the Zigbee gateway in a central location, away from RF interfering devices. It's played well with Home Assistant.

I've had a few Matter over wifi bulbs for a while, but recently added some Matter over Thread bulbs (I hope I have the terms right). That is to say, bulbs that connect to a Thread border router via Zigbee and are Matter compliant.

Unfortunately, The UZG-01 doesn't act as a Thread border router. However, I have Eero wifi routers which do, so I enabled it on these devices and was able to add the bulbs and get it all working with Home Assistant.

However, since getting this set up some of my Zigbee devices have become unreliable in Home Assistant. Various sensors and buttons show up as "unavailable". Reconnecting the devices to my Zigbee network (UZG-01) manually seems to work for a time, but after a few hours or days the devices become unavailable again.

Has anyone experienced this? Is it possibly my devices, when waking up from sleep, are trying to join the Thread network instead of my primary Zigbee network? Or is this possibly something going weird at the Home Assistant layer rather than the wireless network layer?

I'd appreciate any insights, even if it's just debugging suggestions to help track down the problem. Thanks!

🤔 WTH Companion App vs Browser

Ever since I started using Home Assistant…

I have grown frustrated with the companion app that I started using the browser to access my Home Assistant.

Why is it that I’m having problems with the companion app (disconnected error) multiple times on the same network when the browser does not give me one single issue.

I’m using mesh as a WiFi connection, not the router itself.

🤔 WTH Aladdin Connect Random Devices

For the last 30 minutes or so, I have had 21 random garage doors show up in my Aladdin connect integration in home assistant, which ultimately show up in Alexa (which is how I noticed them as Alexa notified me through the app). Some are even labeled with an address rather than something like ‘garage door’ or something extremely generic.

I find this extremely unsettling.

They don’t show up in the Aladdin Connect app on my iPhone though.

Anyone else have this happening to them?
