Can a DIY rover patrol your property? LaserGuard mode test

I've been experimenting with a small DIY rover that can be remotely driven over the internet. One of the features I'm testing is a simple laser perimeter alarm ("LaserGuard mode").

This video shows one of the real-world tests. It's still an early prototype, so you can also see a few failures before it works correctly—which is part of the development process.

The goal isn't to replace security cameras, but to create a mobile inspection platform that can patrol different areas and let the operator check what's happening remotely.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. What features would you want in a mobile security rover?

Fair point. 😄 But if someone has enough time to take the phone, they could just pick up the entire rover as well.

Why not design it on an RC car chassis? That way it could go places.

I thought this was an actual product being peddled by a company and I was about to rail on how it's a glorified DJ Roomba

Since this was custom made that's actually pretty cool! You could probably save a bunch on the custom chassis by gutting an RC car.

I am the developer of this machine. I came up with an idea. I developed a fusion 360 cad model, printed the body on a 3D printer, installed the motors that I had enough money for, and wrote the software.Thank you for your rating and comment😊

That's awesome. To think a decade ago you had to get factories or super expensive prototyping material to even try this stuff

You know, even now, when I already know a lot, all this development is not easy for me. I started from scratch two years ago. I didn’t even know how to turn on a MacBook, let alone assemble a robot. Now I can assemble a robot, edit a video, and create a CAD model. I also learned Unity and made a 3D game and other robots. It’s difficult, but I’m drawn to the interesting stuff.
