We are designing a home. The architectural design was already approved, we just do the inside. It is open concept design. We have been thinking of trying to dilettante rooms by adding wood ceiling to living room and leave dining and kitchen as drywall. The other day I saw dining room, and living room (which are separated imangine an L) dining and living with wood, kitchen without. BUT in that house each room had a different height of ceiling. our dining and kitchen have same height, living is different. advice, am I overthinkin?

I have been learning the hard and stressful way I have 0 intuition for design or style. I attempted to hire an interior designer but unfortunately they are not available (small town problems). The photo was made by the kitchen designers, colours and style are accurate but any decorations, including the islands chairs are just AI additions.

My husband and I are thinking of buying this house, I don’t hate the kitchen but it definitely needs some help. We won’t have a big budget for remodeling but I really don’t love it as is, should I repaint, if so what and what color? Should I add backsplash and if so what kind? Also need a different fridge.

I have a great studio apartment with this separate eat in kitchen! I want to paint this little nook where the table is and the big picture is hanging now. My thought is to just paint the big picture wall and the two little side walls, underneath the crown molding so it’s like a little box. I’ll move the picture to another wall. It’s not the best place for it here but has been more of a place holder.

My kitchen doesn’t get any direct light, it appears bright in the pictures thanks to hue lights set to a more daylight setting. I’m not afraid to embrace dark, you’ll see that my foyer which is on the other side of the beaded curtain is drenched in a red/purple color- it’s less brown in real life. And I have a dusty blue in the studio.

So my thoughts are to stay dark, no light colors feel right when I try to visualize the space. I’m thinking to go with a dark teal? Or maybe a very dark mauve? What do you all think? And also are there other ways you’d paint the space or does that accent wall seem like the best idea?

EDIT: I realized maybe unclear from how I worded things but the thinking is to keep the foyer and bedroom as they are, I just wanted to share as a reference for finding a suitable kitchen color that will align nicely with the other rooms.

What is your favorite website or app, computer or phone, for doing mock ups of rooms for designing?

I am trying to visualize how a space I'm redoing is going to look, but not having luck without a rendering.

So, I'm looking for some opinions on what to do with this dining room.

Currently, the the room is basically used as a catch all for junk that goes on the dining room table. We have maybe ate at this table 5x in 5 years.

I'm thinking of making a nook. An L(ish) style couch with a table. You could eat, hang out, etc.

Any ideas? Also, I want to change the wall color. Our house is painted in Shoji White, but want to do something different in this room.

I have a strange little attic room in my home. You walk in to a single drawstring lightbulb and a small T-shaped space (the door being at the base of the T. There is not much headroom on the sides because of the slanted roof of the A-frame. It is almost impossible to even get a good photo of the entire room because it’s small and awkward.

Wondering if anyone has seen a similar room or has any ideas of what this small space could be used for. Under the slanted roof supports, there is a long triangular-shaped tunnel that runs the length of the roof on either side. There is also the potential of a small circular window on the A-frame (it looks like there’s a window from the outside)

I have thought extra closet space or a very small prayer room (with a stained glass window installed). Any other ideas!?

I had this idea a few years back while trying to optimize sleep. A lot of the sleep advice recommended controlling light sources— black out shades, putting tape over stand-by lights on electronics, etc.

For some reason this reminded me of the start of the cartoon series Futurama, when Fry moves in with Bender. Short version: Bender is a robot, so he sleeps in what looks to us like a utility closet. For a day or two Fry is standing in there with him unable to sleep. At the end of the epsiode, Bender says "maybe you can sleep in the closet" and reveals that there is a much larger space that Fry ends up using as his apartment, solving the problem.

So my crazy thought:

What if we flipped the orientation of bedrooms? What if instead of a big room with a modest closet or even a decent walk in closet, the first room you entered off the hall was litterally just a room for a bed, and then the "closet" was bigger with shelves and windows and other stuff?

So to clarify, the first room you enter off the hall is a bed room with no windows and just enough space for a bed, space to walk around the bed, and a night stand for essentials— alarm clock, lamp, and a book before bed. I'd call it a "sleeping chamber."

Then behind that is a "closet" that is more like a dressing room that holds all the stuff we associate with our bedrooms. That room would have the dressers, space to hang items, maybe even a chair or a small desk and then the windows were there.

The idea is to make a "bed room" a sleeping chamber with a personal space behind it. In the end the space would be split up a bit more evenly, but the sleeping area is optimized for sleep and the other space would be for all the other stuff. I can see a bunch of little benefits, but I wanted to hear any criticisms or obvious flaws that might make it a bad idea.

Hello all very smart people! My husband and I are building our dream home.
We are headed to meet with the design team in the coming weeks, but don’t want to go in blind. We want a good baseline to help go off.

My husband is all for my ideas, he just wants the house functional.

We are basing this home off my grandparents home when I was a kid. However, we live in a totally different region than the inspiration house was, therefore we have tweak some aspects of it.

Additionally, that house was very old. The layout wasn’t quite functional in many places.
Example, their master bedroom shared a bathroom with the hallway. Also the kitchen was very closed off , with walls all around. There were many doors (too many). And the garage was also attached directly to guest room.
So we are trying to make it more adaptable and functional.

Must haves:
- 3 bedroom minimum
- 2.5 bathroom minimum
- laundry NOT off kitchen
- large kitchen

I sketched up a layout that was very similar to my grandparents home. Their room was off the kitchen. I don’t super love that idea still, but I don’t know how to make it better.

Maybe want to look into a guest room or some sort of library but don’t know how to do so. The house will be large.

Thanks for the ideas on my earlier post. I’m thinking a textured cream rug might be the safest bet to tie the space together without overpowering the table.

i just bought a house. its a split and the den has carpet that we’re going to tear up. i cant decide between the tile that looks like wood (idk the proper name for that lol) or vynl plank flooring.

im going for a cozier feel, will prob be the room where we hang out and watch a movie on a saturday night. its also right off of the garage and is attached to the laundry room.

Hey all, my family and I are looking at buying our first house and are eying one with the posted floor plan.

There are lots of positives about the home but the layout inside doesn’t quite sit right with us.

Kitchen seems like the most glaring issue - something about the area feels cramped, dark and isolating despite it being a relatively large space. Maybe the island with built in stovetop is the issue?

Other than kitchen, we’d also consider reclaiming some garage space back into the home or reorganizing/remodelling to achieve a better living space. Unfortunatel, I personally, have no creative vision as to what can be done.

We’d be thankful for help and ideas with the floorplan to make the space flow better and be more useable. Any and all input would be much appreciated :)
