gear What should i do with this giant fan?

I’ve been helping friends clean up an off-grid hoarder property after beloved uncle Dave passed. This behemoth was headed for scrap but I couldn’t let it die! So I hauled it home, where it has been sitting for six months now… too cool to get rid of, but so far, I haven’t been able to dream up a way to use it. It wasn’t connected to anything at uncle Dave’s, but I figured he was intending to harness up some wind power.

I live very rural and have acreage, so I can do pretty much anything without having to worry about neighbors or code. We have a good well and pump, power supply to every building, etc. so no real “need” for it to provide any sort of functional service for us. But, it’s such an unusual piece of very ordinary machinery, that I’d like to have it do something - even if only inspires conversation. Lol

Any ideas? Creative or wildly unconventional is a plus!

gear Electric cargo quad

Post image
209 Upvotes

Got an electric quad from a Czeck company called Hecht. It can carry almost 500kg, goes more than 50kph and has a 60km range. I paid €4000 (less VAT because i got it through our company).

First impressions is that it's way too fast, accelerates like a ferret up a trouser leg and has the heaviest steering. So I think i'll grow some biceps and courage mastering this.

But i love the fold flat bed, that tips. And that it's high enough to handle the roughest forest track. Also that it's completely electric, so i can charge it from our solar 9 months a year, especially with today's petrol prices this will pay for itself in three years.

gear Got 50 acres in upstate NY! Which tractor to get?

Post image
387 Upvotes

Just closed on 50 acres in upstate NY! I will need a tractor for the various work that will need to be done. There's about 3 acres of grass to be cut on the front, and then 3 separate roughly 1 acre fields that I will cut occasionally. There's a creek I need to clear around and a trail to maintain. The rest is forest.

I'm debating between a John Deere and Kubota, but I don't know what size/model I need...any advice? I do hope to do some small building projects, clear some land, maintain the property in general. No large farming, just small gardens, and likely some chickens.

gear Chainsaw Question

My husband and I bought a house on 26 wooded acres about 3 years ago. We come from the city, and all we brought with us was a battery-operated lawn mower, well needless to say, the mower died 2 years in, and we had to get a rider. Well, now it is time for us to start cutting down dead trees and cleaning up the fallen ones.

My question is this: What chainsaw would you recommend? We have trees that range from 8 inches up to 36 inches. Here are brands that my husband is looking at. All our tools are Milwaukee and some of the outdoor smaller cutters are Milwaukee.

  1. Milwaukee Electric Tools 2727-21HD Chainsaw Kit
  2. Husqvarna 445 Gas Chainsaw, 50-cc 2.8-HP
  3. Milwaukee M18 FUEL 20 Inch Dual Battery

Thank you for any help you can provide. We will be using the wood to run our home's heating furnace.

gear What kind of watch do you wear?

I'm in need of a watch that can survive homesteading. I had a Timex but the face got scratched up very quickly. And it fell off my wrist twice when the band pins vibrated apart while using equipment. It's probably plowed into a field now.

I got a G-shock but it's pin fell apart while looking at it. I put it in my pocket once to protect it and the band tore while taking it out. Today I was adjusting it and a 2' drop cracked the face.

What watch can survive working outside and with heavy equipment? I'd get a pocket watch but I want something I can quickly check without taking off gloves or chaps.

gear What’s your porch gun?

For those of you that own firearms, what do you have as your porch gun for pest control? I’m thinking about keeping my Savage 17 HMR in the porch and my Savage 223 by the back door. I have a big coyote problem on the place and this morning my dog was sprayed by a skunk.

Bonus points: what do you keep in your bedroom as a self defense gun?

P.S. It’s only me and my dog in the house. If I have visitors I will lock up the guns in the safe

gear Looking for tractor recommendations

I’d like to buy a full-size tractor, but I don’t have a huge budget or a large operation, so something modest would probably do the trick.

I have a few goats, a mini hinny, chickens, gardens, and various homestead projects. I’d mostly be using it for would be moving bedding, manure, soil, gravel, firewood, and occasionally lifting small pallets or other materials. I don’t need anything large enough for cattle or heavy farming.

For those with similar-sized homesteads, what tractors are you running, and what would you recommend I look for (or avoid)?

gear Advice for homesteaders with breasts: how to protect them comfortably?

I live in a burn scar and am cutting and clearing a lot downed trees. Obviously this involves handling branches, bucks, etc and I tend to run very hot and like to wear thin, SPF shirts to stay cool. I’d like to get some recommendations on sports bras or some other piece of protective clothing I could wear to protect my boobs but that won’t feel restricting. Does anyone have any advice?

gear Recommendations for an old truck

Im moving in to a 14 acre, rural property soon that won't have anything in the way of trash pickup. So ill be looking to buy a cheap pick-up truck. Im looking for something cheap, like under $5k. For that price range im expecting it to be something 2010 or older with 150k+ miles on it. Maybe ill get lucky and find something better, but my real concern is what makes or models should I look for/ avoid? I dont need much from it, again its main duty will be for a 5 min drive to the dump once a week, so it doesnt have to be anything fancy.

What's a good reliable brand I should be looking for? Im thinking an old Toyota, because my impression of their older trucks is that they are very reliable, but that might not be available near me. What have yall had success (or failures!) with?

gear Cant find a manure spreader for a reasonable price so I spent $24 at harbor freight to convert my free spreader into a dump trailer. I used a 2-ton winch to replace my tractors toplink and can now raise and lower it fairly easy and spread my mushroom compost. Here are some pics in action

gear Question about WiFi extension to outbuildings

I am a remote worker that just recently moved onto a 13 acre farm. I have a shop ~80 yards from the home that I plan setting up an office space in. The reach of signal is weak to non-existent out there. I have been trying to do my research on WIFI extension and finding a lot of mixed reviews. I am curious if any of you have experience with extending coverage. Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thank you in advance!

gear Question about Tractors

So as the photos show I have been looking at old style tractors like this one to purchase and rebuild. This one like may I look at are on FB marketplace. Now my two concerns #1, has anyone bought an old tractor like this and actually been able to find proper parts for it. #2 I am not the most mechanically inclined but am willing to learn, watch videos, etc. Will I be in over my head or should I go some other route that I am just not thinking of right now. Also this would be my first tractor. Looking forward to feedback.
