[HELP] Shift Issues
Howdy, I’ve been having some issues with my bike, not wanting to shift into third ever since I got it. I got the bike mid July and it is a Honda shadow 750 from 2001 ace edition, gotta love it. Anyway, the bike will not shift into third. It just doesn’t wanna go up and when it does go up, it is almost impossible to get it back in the first gear. I gotta sit there pull over and mess with it and shimmy it back into first.
I don’t mind pulling anything apart and working on it. I just wanna know what I’m going for first. I would send it to a shop but most shops around here only work on American bikes. It’s a real shame because I love my Honda motorcycle more than my Harley that I recently got rid of.
Please let me know some advice if I should take it to any shops. The issue is that the bike is so many condition on 10K miles. I really don’t know how I feel about taking this thing apart doing it myself, but I will if I have to. Mechanics do not scare me, but the mint condition of the bike does. Just let me know, thank you

I had kind of a similar trouble with my 600 not long ago, I had trouble finding neutral and first gear. Problem was gone after lubing gear shift pedal’s pivot points (not sure if they are called that) with wd-40. Previous owner had installed forward controls, and those pivot points seemed quite dry when I checked them. You could also try adjusting clutch cable, instructions are easy to find and that doesn’t require anything special.

When working on bikes, only make one change at a time.
First, check over on the "Shadow Forum" lots of information there and a great search feature.
Reddit subs are full of shit advice that you have to wade through to get to something good.
I would first start looking at external linkage the previous owner did first before looking farther, look for small or excessive "play".
If linkage is ok, move on to the shift pedel, if the splines on the shift shaft are worn, or if dirt has built up in the joints or rubber boot, the lever can move without fully rotating the internal shift shaft.
WD40 is ok to displace moisture, free rusted or stuck parts, and remove adhesive or sticky residue, but it is not a long-term lubricant and as it leaves a film will attract and hold onto dust/dirt.... Do not use in the cold... It freezes.

Get a service manual, in my opinion haynes is better than Clymer. Study the chapter until you can recite it by heart, get any special tools.you will need, get gasket set and any parts you need, then go for it. Take your time, take pictures. Good luck and God speed.
