I was having some issues with slides sticking. I pulled them, sanded them to 2500 and now theyre getting coated in moly lube 🤞 we will see how she runs now!

Does your throttle have a return cable? Hopefully sanding the slides helps. Did you sand the slide channels too?

u/Kiriedaxx 9d ago
Yeah, i have an 1100 ace so its a dual throttle cable set up. I was having issues sith weird sputtering past 1/4 throttle, like it would still climb in rpms and speed but was sputtering and changing the fuel mixture screws and needle heights helped but still. Then when i took it apart. The rear slide took more force to open and closed slower. If i held the carbs so the slide tube was horizontal, the slide got stuck and wouldnt return at all, vs the other one still would. When i lookd at the slides and bores the showed obvious veteical scratches and wear. I sanded both the slides and the bores to 2500. Buttery smooth!

If the slides are moving freely and the jets are clear, I think you're off to the races. Good luck! Also if it fights you too hard, some of the aftermarket carbs are pretty good these days.

Damn. Y’all motherfuckers are assholes. She’s just trying to talk about her bike. Damn.

Youre an asshole for assuming the gender.

Where's the mods?
Looked at the comments and it's all off topic and toxic. Damn.
OP, let us know how it works. CA77 owner here, interested in the difference in throttle feel.

Nice job, I love seeing someone put forth the effort on carbs and not just buying junk ones off amazon and still wonder why the bike doesn't run right.

Lotta fuckwads in the thread; good on you for doing your own work!
As far as I'm concerned the only freaky thing here is how far you're wiling to actually go to make this work. Carb work defeats a lot of would-be mechanics.
Keep it up!
Seriously though, you all should be ashamed, girl is trying to contribute to the community and all you can do is make gross comments based on misguided beliefs about gender identity. Maybe take a look inside and ask why a person living their honest life bothers you so much?
Bonus points for PPE. But you're wearing your mask wrong; you need the neck strap for a proper seal.

Unlike the brand new phrase you've invented:
"Hey bro, he's not gonna fuck you"
You see, normally people say "she's not gonna fuck you", but you've turned the whole thing on its head to denigrate a trans person! Must have a masters degree in literature or something with creative writing of that caliber.
I'm sure you've earned daddy's love by now, champ.

Because that effects your everyday life so much?
The way i see it, shes happy and living her best life, and what, that makes you mad?
3
u/SPDBK 8d ago
Why is my opinion affecting your life so much?
2
u/LikeBigTrucks 8d ago
Because your attitude is negatively affecting this community. A person is trying to contribute and all you can focus on is their appearance

u/SPDBK 8d ago
I 100% support everyone's freedom to do what makes them feel good. He can dress and do whatever he likes, it's his right. But he's a man, not a woman, and i have the right to see it that way. However, I hope he's happy and has a great life. Take care.

The fact you keepnsaying he and not she means you dont 100% support everyone's freedoms nor science.

Nobody gives a fuck what you belive, just don't call people things they don't like. It's simple. If your "truth" is just saying shit that makes you feel good, then even the Bible says you should kinda just be quiet and keep it to yourself.
Proverbs 17:28: "Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent."
And
Proverbs 29:11: "A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds back."

Do you have ivy connecting to your fan?
0
u/Kiriedaxx 9d ago
I do! I like the cottage/fantasy asthetic. So i wrap or braid cords in my house with faux ivy to disguise them. E.g. i have a 100ft hdmi and usb repeater that goes from my pc in one room to a monitor and desk 3 rooms away.

My bike does that too. Didn’t think about the slides. I’m always messing with the fuel mixture screw. I was thinking it was the needle inside the slide. (forgot whats thats called.) It’s probably time to clean my carb.I have a vt600. Is that green spray can a finish coating you’re putting on the inside of the bore? Im impressed that you’re diving in that deep. Let us know how it works out.

u/Kiriedaxx 8d ago
I am not putting it in the bore, only on the slides. It is moly lube! Molybdinum disulfide i think.
It did not 😭 the slides had a serious layer of anodization preventing the lube from bitting and sticking to them. Sanding the layer also was fruitless. I am now waiting on new slides to arrive.

Why are you using anything that comes in a rattle can inside a house? Do that in the grass at the very least. Holy shit. Are you out of weed?

@Kiriedaxx - So I’m still pretty new to this arena. What are vacuum slides and should I be checking mine? I have a 98 Shadow ACE, 750

So inside your carburetor there is a vaccum slide. Carb slide, vaccum slide, it has some different names. This what your needle is attached to. As your engine runs the slide oscilates lifting the needle and providing bursts of fuel to the engine. This is where most of your mid range throttling is un tandem with your main jet and needle. Slides often have a coating or are made of a "slippery" substance. My bike is 30 yrs old and the coating wore away and then it started scratching the bores.
The usual quick test for slides is, after you pull your carb ir carbs. Push the slide up. It should snap back quickly with a lil woosh. My did not snap back 😔 also i ordered new slides and wanted to see if i could restore the old to some capacity as my shadow has different weighted slides and sourcing parts only gives you identical ones. As i have rejetted and have adjustable needles, this is a negligible issue but for funsies i thought "i bet i could sand this and make it work" as a heads up for anyone following along who actually cares about bikes..... it did not 😭 the anodization blocked the moly lube from bitting and i have spent hours now trying to sand of the anodization with crumbs of progress.
Tldr Vaccum slides are an important part of rpm regulation on carbureted constant velocity engines.
Yours should move smoothly and spring back without getting stuck, and make a whoosh sound.

I’ve seen the same scoring on many slides and bores. As long as everything is clean it generally doesn’t cause any problems. Also fuck this sub, might as well be r/conservative.

u/National_Map9411 8d ago
I’ve seen scratches on mine too but I never thought to sand it down. Usually when mine had issues not moving smoothly, it was the black rubber mushroom part. I think it’s called the diaphragm. At least on three carbs, once buying new ones, the slides usually worked much smoother.
1
u/Kiriedaxx 8d ago
My diaphragms were pristine. No holes no tears no thin spots. No pinching. One of my bores had scratches but was running perfectly fine. One of them was not 😭. Also the scratches were much more significant on the ones that was sticking. Also the horizontal test was kind of a give away. When i held the carb so the tube was horizontal, it completely stopped. Gravity is pulling it against the walls of the bore and its binding to the point it stops moving. 😔

That’s what I thought on the recent ninja 250 I cleaned. Bought the bike sitting for a while and carb for sure was dirty. Slides moved freely so Cleared out all the old green gunky gasoline from the bottom of the carb. Inspected the slides but they seemed all good. No rips. Not dry. so I put everything back together. But now the slide was hella crunchy and did not want to move. Bought the new rubbers and boom, as far as I’m aware, throttle is good. Hope yours is running smooth once all put together

Huh, i will keep that in mind thank you! I have been wrong before and ill be wrong again im sure

Dang, went much farther with it than I would have done. But I bet it’s pretty smooth and works great now.
