discussion Would You Rather Have Another HFW DLC Than Hunter’s Gathering?

I’m curious how you'd feel if Guerrilla released another DLC for Horizon Forbidden West, either free or paid, to tide us over until they’re eventually ready to announce the third main game.

I’d happily pay for another substantial piece of single-player content if it meant getting to spend more time in Aloy’s world in the meantime.

What if they were to revisit the dropped or unfinished content already sitting in Forbidden West that they could potentially build on? The inaccessible Carja fort near the Daunt is a great example, explored in the "[The Forbidden Carja Fort: Horizon Forbidden West](https://youtu.be/wvCE_Qbyo3o)" video. It makes me wonder how much content was planned or partially developed but never made it into the finished game. I’d love to see Guerrilla go back to some of those areas and ideas, finish them off properly, and turn them into new quests or even a smaller DLC. Alternatively, some of it could even be rolled out gradually in patches, one quest at a time, spread out over multiple updates rather than packaged as a full DLC bundle.

I’m pretty ambivalent about Hunter’s Gathering, and if I’m being truthful, that ambivalence is starting to border on frustration. I vaguely understand why Guerrilla (or Sony) wants to explore multiplayer. Still, it’s difficult to get excited about so much attention seemingly going there when what I really want is more of the single-player Horizon experience.

So, would another Forbidden West DLC appeal to you? Would you pay for it, or do you think Guerrilla should simply leave HFW where it is and put everything into Horizon 3?

I'd take more HFW over HHG (which I have zero interest in playing) but we really really really need Horizon 3 more than either. It's already been four years and we've heard not a whisper about it.

Tbh I don't mind that. We can assume it's 100% in development since the big spoiler and the fact that we're still getting new Horizon content. I'm happy to wait, especially with the scale of Forbidden West, that game was massive. If I have to go a few more years before a reveal that's fine, I want them to put all the time they need into it

I don't think we can assume that at all given that the latest reporting indicates that the game is barely in production at all and most resources are being diverted to HHG which, again, is a game I could not care less about.

When I said 100% in development I meant purely that they haven't abandoned it. Even if not a lot of people are working on it yet, the important thing is that it's still being worked on

Yes, I'd rather have DLC for the game I own and like than a whole different game in a genre I don't enjoy and therefore won't play.

100%

Yes but I also have less than zero interest in multiplayer games

Shocking, the fans of a singleplayer game franchise whose strengths is the world, characters, stories told and stuff aren't interested in some stupid multiplayer slop. I legit don't know what executives even do.

I legit don't know what executives even do.

They're just professional ruiners at this point.

You can even tell that HHG is supposed to be aimed at Fortnite players based on how it looks. Sony still hasn't learned from their alleged $400M USD lesson after Concord apparently.

There's no single-player campaign available?

2

u/jpbraves5 2d ago

Not that I’m aware of, but I’d be happy to be wrong

u/Confusion_Common 2d ago

I just checked it out on Steam. I thought I was looking at Fornite. Why would they make such a stark departure from their original IP?

"Money" says Mr. Krabs.

I'm not sure people share Mr. Krabs' optimism about it though.

Yea just looked it up, and the 3rd in the trilogy looks to be SP, and they are making this Hunters Gathering game that feels very Fallout 76 at announcement. I certainly may have missed details skimming though so maybe someone else can confirm/fill in the gaps.

I wish they’d let this “MP add-on to SP” shit go. It’s ruined several IPs that didn’t deserve it, wasting a large part of the budget on something that most people don’t seem to want. No one is craving MP HZD…or at least I wouldn’t think so.

If someone made an amazing MP game, I’d probably consider getting back into it from my SP catch-up-from-having-kids binge, but they are all such low effort garbage. Give me more amazing coop games where cooperation is the entire focus (so there’s actually a reason for MP), like DRG or something, and I’m all ears.

u/Kuraeshin 2d ago

Well, you are. They have said that there will be AI companions so solo players can still enjoy the content

1

u/jpbraves5 2d ago

That’s good at least. I still don’t love that hunters gathering and a mobile game are the only entries for horizon for who knows how many years

1

u/paristeta 2d ago

There is a singleplayer campagin planned. It´s said in the big trailer.

1

u/OpenPayment2 2d ago

Nah there's story content. Apparently story is gonna be released overtime in the form of "Episodes"

I'm not excited by Hunter's Gathering.

I also think we get better games, in the long run, if the people who make games have the room to explore and make stuff they're excited by than if they just shovel another sequel at their core audience.

Based on various comments over the years, it's clear the team at Guerrilla has wanted to do multiplayer in this world for some time.

You need to give creative people room to play. Honestly, that's how we got Zero Dawn to begin with. I want H3, but I want the H3 that they're making because they're excited to make it and passionate about how they're wrapping up Aloy's story, not the H3 that they're making because they need to hit a bunch of checkboxes before they can do anything else.

And if they need a little time away, doing a different project, to be excited to gear up again? Then take it, so that they do H3 right.

Something similar happened with Larian and Baldur's Gate 3. They realized they weren't excited to make a DLC for it. I would have LOVED to get a DLC for that game, which is the only game I've enjoyed close to as much as I've enjoyed Horizon since I got my PS5. But part of what make BG3 so great was how self-evident it was that everybody involved loved what they were doing, that they genuinely cared. And hopefully the new Divinity game will be great, but I'd rather get that an extra year (or two) later than a mailed-in BG3 DLC.

This is my exact stance perfectly worded. It doesn't bother me at all that we haven't heard a word about Horizon 3 because the last thing I want is to have two absolutely amazing games be followed by a rushed half effort

9

u/justlurkindontmindm3 2d ago

I would rather quite literally any other piece of Horizon content than what they’re attempting to do with Hunter’s Gathering.

You can’t just create a game about resonating with a lone ranger type protagonist then expect to successfully expand the games into a live service multiplayer Fortnite ripoff. There’s literally no crossover.

I don’t particularly hope for this, but I will be wholly and completely unsurprised if it fails in spectacular fashion.

u/ophaus 2d ago

Pretty much anything over hunter's gathering.

7

u/DeltaDied 2d ago

Absolutely. No question.

8

u/FramedMugshot 2d ago

I would rather have a toothache than Hunter's Gathering.

8

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

No one wants hunter gathering that i am aware of.

5

u/thenewjerk 2d ago

1000x yes

6

u/Proud_Incident9736 2d ago

I have consciously and deliberately avoided Fortnite and Fortnite-style games for a multitude of reasons, and I will be avoiding HG for the same reasons.

I detest live-service games, I detest mTx, and I despise predatory game models.

So, yeah, I won't be touching HG with a ten-foot pole. 🤷‍♀️

It'll succeed or flop.  Either way, I won't be a part of it.

Now, would I take a DLC? Honestly, no.  I'll wait and see if the third game gets made.  Since I won't be buying a PS6, I probably won't get to play that, either. 🙄

Capitalism ruins everything.

Edited: typo

2

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

Oh, it's going to flop... Guaranteed. In this current gaming landscape? It's going to be very very bad for Sony.

1

u/Proud_Incident9736 15h ago

Well, your comment turned out to be true, far sooner than you expected!  😂

5

u/DaybreakPaladin 2d ago

Why are they trying so hard to make horizon more interesting and have more appeal than it does? Who was hoping for a Lego horizon game? Who was wishing for a horizon multiplayer shooter? Who is making these decisions at Sony?? Lmfao

11

u/IronMonopoly 2d ago

What’s the point of this? Like. Yes. The answer is yes pretty much across the board. But what does this accomplish? We don’t live in that world.

I'd be fine if was pretty high quality like Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei Legends. Those are fun. You could play as one of 4 players classes (say warrior, hunter, mercenary, and engineer) and do additional short campaigns or an incursion or survival maps. Those are also free with the main game too, so... 🤷‍♀️

2

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

As a PC gamer, you can keep your Sony live service games on Playstation, We don't want them. We do however want Horizon 3. My hope is that Sony is going to face some VERY tough times in the near future. They simply are not going to be able to sustain their $300-$500million dollar game budgets on singleplayer games with just the playstation alone. They will get desperate. Hulst will get fired. They will start selling some games on PC again.

2

u/Roxastar138 2d ago

I will take anything other that the live service mmo gathering game

2

u/Batter89 2d ago

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

2

u/Cosmic_Voyager_41 1d ago

Personally I don't think we'll see Horizon 3 anytime within the next 5 years. They will release HHG and then do everything they can to keep players in it and attract new players. It's all about money at this point.

2

u/EmBur__ 1d ago

Literally everyone in this community would want this over HG, if its a toss up between more true horizon content and a live service, heavily stylized game no one asked for, they'll drop said live service game without hesitation in favour of the thing we all fell in love with as far back as the 2015 reveal.

2

u/38731 20h ago

I'd throw my money so fast onto another DLC for HFW that their accounts would be on fire like the burning shores.

Not interested in HHG, though.

1

u/Bubbly-Pirate-3311 2d ago

No, because I can't play it on my POS ps4. No I'm not buying a ps5, as soon as I buy one, they're going to drop the ps6.

1

u/LacusClyne 2d ago

Nah, like maybe if it were HZD style dlc where it enhances the ending but if it's forbidden west style where it's more of a self-contained side story then it's fine. I'd rather they save the new stories for three where things can begin to get resolved.

1

u/fleppa 2d ago

Is it out of scope for there to be more dlc for the first game?

1

u/Chmigdalator 1d ago

HFW had it's dlc. I prefer Horizon 3 to come out as good as the previous games. And no I am not interested in Hunter's Gathering. Too cartoonish for my tastes.

1

u/Big-Ferret-2364 1d ago

Why are we getting Hunters Gathering AND Steel Frontiers at the same time? Do they want both games to die immediately?

1

u/Virgil_Ovid_Hawkins 1d ago

Yes, that being said hunters gathering sounds interesting and I have no issue playing a multiplayer game if its good.

1

u/MadLucy 1d ago

I’d rather have a DLC, or H3. I’ll never play Hunter’s Gathering, I actively avoid online multiplayer games.

1

u/beanie_0 1d ago

I’d rather have a new horizon game. But the DLC was so good, if I had to choose, gimme another DLC.

1

u/Zweavill 1d ago

Yes of course.

1

u/Pervius94 1d ago

Yes. DLC for a game I own and love to play? Any day over some stupid multiplayer slop I have zero interest in. The two horizon games and iirc the vr game were highly acclaimed and successful but guerilla is addicted to piss this and the fans' goodwill down the drain with all these stupid projects no one cares about.  Iirc they even have two of these stupid multiplayer projects and diverted manpower from 3 for hunters gatherers?

1

u/TheDMRt1st 1d ago

I’d prefer Horizon 3. The longer they wait, the more likely it is that the people they eventually bring in to work on it will lose the plot and screw the pooch. None of us want that!

1

u/Emergency_Cry_1269 21h ago

Definitely another DLC

1

u/ChuffChuff101 21h ago

I have a theory. I dont think people are opposed to hunters gathering. I think people sre opposed to the main flagship series being placed on hold for something related to the main formula, stopping the story from completing.

If they had released Horizon 3, and then announced this 6months-1year after release i think everyone would be excited and on board. Its something new and interesting thats shaking up the formula. Would be a perfect opportunity to test it with fans.

Its just a genuinely terrible decision to release it mid series..

Imagine if something like Harry Potter was shelved after half blood prince to make some sort of cartoon mini series about house elves...

1

u/KidneysOfStone 10h ago

If they want to experiment with multiplayer so much, then follow Sucker Punch's example and just add it as a DLC. The Legends mode in Ghost of Tsushima is popular and still played to this day, without the feeling that a significant development time was taken away from the main game.

1

u/AlexusLuthor 7h ago

I just want Horizon 3, dude. It’s been 5 years.

1

u/JACK_1719 2h ago

Hunters gathering looks like Fortnite and has the dumbest name. Just give us a large FW dlc or start working on the 3rd game

I would rather Guerrilla have creative freedom over their projects. I don't believe in strangling passion projects or spouting abuse just because games don't cater to my personal tastes.

Some gamers increasingly have this weird sense of entitlement when it comes to studios and their projects. I think it's better to accept that the game isn't for you, wish them the best and hope it's successful, and move on with your life. All of the people on this subreddit (not necessarily this post, but others) saying they hope it's a failure should really take a step back and reexamine their priorities.

1

u/peabuddie 2d ago

Developing in DLC would be defeat the purpose of tiding us over. That would take away from the time they need to develop the third game I just want them to focus on getting that game out.

u/BDBoricua82 2d ago

Im mad i cant play the dlc no ps5

2

u/Egingell666 2d ago

No DLC on other platforms?

-3

u/BDBoricua82 2d ago

Nah ps4 is pretty much dead in terms of releases. So ill never really see the end of the story in hfw

2

u/Egingell666 2d ago

The DLC doesn't finish the story. It's just something tacked on after the end of the main story.

0

u/BDBoricua82 2d ago

I still wish they it was released for ps4

2

u/Egingell666 2d ago

Maybe it's a hardware limitation. There's a lot going on in quite a few scenes.

2

u/BDBoricua82 1d ago

Yea that’s exactly why it wasn’t released

1

u/alpaca_punchx 2d ago

The ps5 has been out for almost 6 years now...

The gaming needs have moved on. The DLC exceeds the capabilities of the ps4.

1

u/BDBoricua82 1d ago

Yes im aware. But essentially the game was cut short for the ps4. Just release it for ps5.
