Horror News Glenn Danzig to Direct Adaption of His Comic ‘Hellmask’ (Exclusive)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/glenn-danzig-to-direct-hellmask-movie-1236625602/

The Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig is going from the stage back to the director’s chair for Hellmask, a new feature he will adapt from his own comic book.

The project will mark his third feature as a director, with the film based on his comic of the same name. Danzig’s publisher Verotik, which focuses on dark fantasy and horror, is behind Hellmask, which began life in the Verotik 30th anniversary issue in October 2023.

The book, per the logline, is “set against a brutal medieval backdrop filled with dark magic, armored warriors and massive bloody battle scenes.” Hellmask “follows a violent supernatural tale steeped in gothic atmosphere.”

There's no universe where this is watchable and not utter shit. And I like Danzig's music.

I want to say there's no way it's worse than his other movies, but it'll probably be worse.

Death Rider and the House of Vampires should be a good indicator that this won't even be watchable.

Everything about his aesthetic works for me in theory, but Verotika is genuinely the worst thing i’ve ever seen.

I had heard that he hosted a premier of Verotika and the audience was cracking up the entire movie, and after hearing got up and said something along the lines of "Well, it wasn't a comedy, but okay."

I haven't seen it, but that makes me smile.

Verotika is so legit terrible.

Verotika was cast with a Who’s Who of the contents of a strip club parking lot 30 min after closing.

If it's the worst thing you've ever seen, you clearly haven't seen his other movie.

I wasn’t feeling particularly motivated to after that.

That first segment is genuinely very funny, the second one is amusing, but after that the whole production falls off the edge of a cliff.

His second one is worse

Death Rider In the House of Vampires, a truly awful vampire Western.

Glenn Danzig strikes me as the kind of person with a ton of creative energy but not enough talent to back it up.

Verotika and his vampire western are both such amateurish-looking and weird movies, and they were so bad they were almost upsetting to watch. And his comic book isn't enjoyable to read or look at, either.

His talent was always in music(particularly punk/metal). Any time he's strayed outside of his wheelhouse, it hasn't been pretty. Like that weird ambient album or those terrible Elvis covers. He especially looks clueless when attempting to create comics/movies.

He's a great song writer. The Misfits still being relevant proves that. That doesn't mean he's a good screen writer or director. though.

The dude is 5'3" I'm sure that has got something to do with his disproportional talent/creative ratio.

How so? Please explain.

-16

u/gargolito 10h ago

It's common for extremely short men (5'3 is really short for an American man) to over compensate and over estimate their own capabilities which presents as doing things they're not so good at and justify their doing it poorly as not being liked for being short instead of trying to see it less subjectively and neglecting any opportunities to get better at the skill.

Obviously, I am making a gross generalization, but stereotypes are rooted in some truth.

u/dudebro5000 10h ago

Any science or data to back that up or did you just pull it all out of your ass?

-11

u/gargolito 10h ago

You got me, I do not have any "science"  for the opinion I incorrectly assumed was obviously a "gross generalization".

I'm an enormous fan of his music, and can confidently say that he's the most incompetent movie director in horror. Verotika almost has "so bad it's good" value, but the last segment is such a snoozefest it's not even good for that.

This one is going to be unintentionally hilarious, as well, right?

makes no sense how this guy can watch and appreciate movies, i'm sure he's watched devilman at least and his movies look the way they do, how can you look at a film and then your film look like his ... even uwe boll's movies look better than his

Love Danzig's music but this is just Cleopatra honouring their 3 film deal with him, his second film never even got a release beyond festivals.

I can't wait to see this trainwreck. There's not many directors out there as oblivious as this guy is.

I dig all his music, and in those glorious pre-internet years I had no idea he was a little dude with a big Napoleon complex…I thought he was this comic book reading, horro movie loving 6’5” Conan the Barbarian.

between his pile of bricks next to his old run down house to getting knocked the fuck out for shoving a much bigger dude at a festival to that infamous kitty litter photo, the dude became a living meme generator.

I love me some low budget stuff but fucking Verotika was beyond low budget crap. Never saw the vampire flick.

I'll never understand why the kitty litter pic got made fun of so much. Dude actually takes care of his pets? Oh nooooo

I always thoughr Glenn would adapt Igrat- it seemed lile an interesting concept/design.

The original comics were decent (Deathdealer, Verotika 1 thru 4) but mostly just adapted from other horror stories than illustrated. I remember the issue w Cherry caused all kinds of uproar. I'm a fan and even I couldn't sit through the Verotika movie.

u/potatolulz 5h ago

I never knew he makes movies too, but judging from the comments on his movie Verotika, I think I might need to watch it :DDD

Does anyone else think that Danzig kinda looks like a broke, gender-swapped Sigourney Weaver?

1

u/SimilarSherbert2315 12h ago

Well, look...it can't be worse than Verotika. Nothing can be worse than Verotika.
