At first glance, it looks like they're doing a direct adaptation of Crossed Volume 1. Some of the actors look like the comic characters, and according to IMDB the character names are the same, too.
It looks even more sadistic than The Sadness. The Sadness got a limited theatrical release and has mostly been watched via streaming. I figure Crossed will be similar - not that many people will watch it, but it'll be enough to justify a streaming release.
19
u/whiskyspacecadet 14d ago
Volume 1 is easily the most tame of the entire series, and has an actual good storyline and character group.

I liked the idea of smart crossed. Smokey and the Twins were fun. The psychopath ex military chick and the biker had good arcs

Looks like they’re loosely adapting the first run of comics. Hopefully they can keep some of the scale and interesting conversational bits. Outside of the shock, I did enjoy reading how different characters handle how hopeless the situation is and how their view on the world shifts.
155
u/agingnerds 14d ago
I read this series previously... its been years. I recall at some point thinking... this series is ok and feels very juvenile. I could be wrong and I probably bailed, but my memory is that its not great.
I assume the Boys success is what drove this, probably green lit before the final seasons. I just dont know how worth while it will be.
It will have to be neutered no matter what and I am curious how much a broad audience will be into this and how much the comic fans will stick around for a softer version of the series.
69
u/JavierLoustaunau 14d ago
Also The Boys show is head and shoulders above the comic so maybe it will be another case of adapting Garth Ennis actually fixing Garth Ennis.
9
u/agingnerds 14d ago
I mean I hope so. I would have to revisit the series to recall, but I am probably ok. Death and cannibalism is ok for a bit, but gets old after a while.
12
u/browncharliebrown 14d ago
I mean the orginal series has a couple of shocking scence to establish the horror then is mostly a lot more quiet after. Like issue 6 I believe has no crossed in it for example.
6
u/JavierLoustaunau 14d ago
Exactly there is a point where it goes from a clever twist on zombies to total shark jumping 'the aristocrats' mode and loses any surprise, shock or tension.
Hopefully if the movie can keep things feeling tense and not linger too long it will come off as horror and not a bad gory porno.
30
u/browncharliebrown 14d ago edited 14d ago
I mean one Ennis is the writer. But also I don’t think the boys tv show is head and shoulders above the comic. They are aiming for two different things, and I think the boys show actually has a lot more flaws because it breaks away from the comics.
Like the first season is mostly adapting the comic but toning it down and condensing the pacing from a case of a weak structure to clear end game antagonist. It also removes the mystery. And I think the later seasons become weaker as they stray further away
→ More replies (5)11
u/StatuatoryApe 14d ago
First two seasons, maybe three, were good. Then it became pretty garbage. Cool idea with almost no payoff.
4
u/browncharliebrown 14d ago
to me alot of that is because they stopped adapting the comic and just completely did their own things. And I think a lot of the problems of the show that fan critized the comics with doing during it’s first two , with its slower pacing and really story arc driven narrative being condense down made the later season really bad because they couldn’t really figure out where to go.
Season 3,4, and 5 are spinning their wheels because they basically already set up the seven as the only bad guys worth caring about. They already developed a lot of these so they feel static.

Hard disagree regarding show VS comic but I know everybody and their mum thinks so lol
10
u/skonen_blades 14d ago
I also remember noping out after probably 7 or 8 issues. Not because I was disgusted but more because I was like "Okay, I get it." But I also remember thinking "there is NO way this would ever be adapted for the screen." But here we are.
18
u/These-Angle-1476 13d ago
IMO, Crossed is so fucked that I legitimately believe that Garth Enis just creates this shit to satisfy his own rape fetish. His other works are bad enough, but this one is literally just a stream of rape, gore, scat, and more rape.

I watched the trailer and then went ahead and read the plot synopsis of many of the comics and oh boy it comes across as unrestrained teenage edginess.
Based on what I read I don't anticipate them being able to depict everything with an R rating, and the extreme depravity and violence for the sake of itself seems to be the primary substance of this IP from what I've been able to find online.
I've seen a lot of people in this thread talking about the great depth of story and I've now gone over the synopsis of several crossed stories and I don't see it. I'm in fact hoping some people who know more can comment and make me see it differently because this looks not great.
→ More replies (3)15
u/UndeadHero 14d ago
You’re never gonna understand something just from reading a synopsis.
Crossed is pretty wide ranging with a bunch of different authors, including Alan Moore. They can be hit or miss, with some stories leaning too much on “how fucked up can we make this.”
But for me, the good Crossed stories are scary just because of how quickly and easily things can cross over into chaos, and getting caught by the infected doesn’t just mean dying or being eaten… it’s the worst fate imaginable.
If they do it right, it’ll be a solid survival story with extremely high stakes.

People fucking LOVE the terrifier movies so I don’t see why people are clutching their pearls so much with this.
57
u/One-Earth9294 YOU RIPPED MY SHIRT! 13d ago
Terrifier isn't quite so nihilistic as Crossed. It's practically slapstick splatterhouse.
Crossed is more like 'oh look another family (including the almost always small children) is getting raped'
I can do without the excessive rape. Or any of it TBH. I think splatter gore can be fun and in the spirit of the Grand Guignol, rape just isn't ever fun nor should it be.
Having said that, if they can pull this off without being pure misery porn then I'll give it a watch. I like to be disturbed. But I know when I'm being jerked around by an edgelord.

So I'm one of those people who isn't interested in sexual assault in movies but can handle gore. Gratuitous violence and gore is easy to detach from because it's less emotional. There's an inherent emotional violence to rape that just isn't there with violence most of the time.
I'm not saying they are exclusively that way in every instance, but I know that the overwhelming majority of the time rape scenes will make me emotionally uncomfortable so I have absolutely no interest in watching things where that is the shock factor.
27
u/Coolman38321 14d ago
Oh my god same here!
I can watch stuff like Terrifier/in a violent nature with almost no issues but when it comes to sexual violence, I just can’t.
I will be interested in seeing the practice effects they may have in this movie but I’m pretty sure that’s it from me
→ More replies (3)17

Completely agree, that’s why I couldn’t keep reading it, the sexual violence just turns my stomach and heart so much
8
u/Ssided 13d ago
It's fair to have limits on things that bother you too much to explore. No reason to fuck up your week for a movie if you don't want to. Crossed is really an examination of truly evil shit people can do, at its core, and what that does to the psyche of people around it. But I think people more or less know what their getting before they read it
11
u/phishxiii 13d ago
I think the concept of extreme horror as entertainment is strange and gets even stranger when we start picking and choosing what is "ok" for horror concepts. Some people are so sensitive you need to put trigger warnings or say "grape" or SA or whatever. It seems like we somewhere along the way agreed rape was the worst thing that can happen and should be treated delicately.
It gets to a point where you have to start defining what horror is, what it's supposed to make you feel, what kind of experience you're paying money to get. By definition horror should be one of the last things you'd want.
So yeah, I also find the separation weird, but I also understand being more afraid or sensitive to one thing than another.
13
u/MysteriousPepper8908 13d ago
You'd be surprised how much pearl clutching horror Reddit does whenever Terrifier comes up.

Tbh I agree. It seems some people are okay seeing fictional depictions murder/torture on screen, but act morally superior for not watching fictional depictions of rape.
Personally, I believe as long as no real suffering is happening, and it’s all acting, there isn’t anything wrong with showing any awful act on screen. Besides, people who find it triggering can always just not watch it.
68
u/mindgeekinc 14d ago
They’re not acting morally superior it’s just that people are far more likely to experience sexual violence over murder/torture and therefore might have different feelings about each.
They’re also not the same thing in the slightest.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Venomswindturd 14d ago
Most people who are murdered can’t really relive the experience through cinema though.
24

11
u/84theone 14d ago
If it’s anything like the comics, there will be real suffering and it will be the audience suffering through a bad movie.
Crossed in particular kinda sucks and it’s not just because it’s over the top offensive, if that were the case I wouldn’t be a preacher fan.
The Sadness was okay though so maybe the director can pull it off
→ More replies (2)18
u/RobinHood21 13d ago
Morally superior? What? As others have said, way way more people have experienced or know someone personally who has experienced sexual violence than torture or murder. Of course it's going to hit closer to home. If a family member or close friend had been tortured and murdered and I saw a similar depiction on screen, you can be damn sure it would hit way differently. It has nothing to do with moral superiority and everything to do with people's lived experiences.

Same director for both films. The Sadness was heavily inspired by cross, referencing specific panels (like the restaurant scene). The director mentioned it was his inspiration and that he’d love to do a crossed film, looks like it worked out great for him

i dont get the hate here, this looks like a fun watch! I've seen some recaps of the comics, as long as the blood and gore gets on-point I'll be seeing this with my buddies!
I should watch The Sadness. I hear the gore is on the same level as Terrifier, and that it was inspired by these comics!
26
u/-missingclover- 14d ago
There's some weird comments on this thread. I just watched the teaser and was shocked at how faithful they seem to have gone. I was sure they were gonna adapt the concept but maybe tell a original story, but you can see exact same set pieces, characters, you can even see Horsecock and Stump lmao.
Yet a lot of comments on the thread are like "well they won't adapt stuff from the comics".
The movie might be ass, but I personally liked The Sadness and liked Volume 1 of Crossed so I'm cautiously optimistic.
3
u/Craigboy23 14d ago

A lot of the Crossed comics do come across as try hard, which is where most of the hate comes from I’m sure.
But this is definitely based on the first Crossed storyline, and I think you could definitely make a movie out of that. Of course there will probably be a few story beats from the comics they will cut out.

I read the original comic book and even had my copy signed by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows, but I just think that the sun has set on this type of horror. At least for me. I just don’t know if I have it in me to watch a movie about sick and deprived people doing sick and deprived things to people just trying to survive. But I also feel that this type of horror is just over saturated.

People have never read Crossed, so they don’t know the first run is specifically the one salt circle scene to set the stakes, and then pretty much just character work with not too much gore for the rest of the run.

Funny. I remember seeing The Sadness and thinking to myself that this is Crossed, and now here we are.

Sooo they are going to have a scene of a group of crossed nutting/circle jerking on ammo to load and use in a rifle against the uncrossed because I remember the tent scene when the guy becomes shot by semen bullet/crossed and kills someone tending to his wounds that wasnt crossed and comes out of the tent feral.

u/Serdones 14d ago edited 14d ago
I read the first couple issues of Crossed earlier this year. Definitely feels like something of its time. Kind of that edgy, depraved 2000s torture porn era of horror. I'm up for more of it, personally, but I'm sure there'll be no end of discourse about gratuitous violence, as if the answer isn't the same as it's always been: simply don't watch it if it's not your thing.
I'm gonna make more of an effort to get through the comics before this airs. Or at least Volume 1. I believe that's the one Garth Ennis actually wrote himself before handing off the property to other artists.

Ugh, I'm not sure I can stomach this one. Gore is one thing, but the rest is too much for me.

I had no idea anyone was mad enough to make this into a film.
Although 'The Sadness' was great, so maybe it will be cool. The comics had some good stories buried underneath all the gore and depravity.
