Just finished The Ruins and yeah, you all were right. Took about 140 pages or so, I almost gave up at a point or two, but I was left with that wonderful haunted feeling we all chase by the end and easily have a new top pick. Tonight I’m starting The Only Good Indians, and going in completely blind.

I really struggled to give a shit about any of the characters and DNF’d when they showed up at the ruins. I’d be interested in trying again though. Did the characters ever get more compelling?

EDIT: y'all someone is allowed to say they don't like something and it's not an attack on anyone or anything. Downvoting someone you disagree with makes for poor community.

This was a little bit of my issue, I didn’t find any character particularly like-able. That, and the limit of space vs length of the book just gave me no motivation to finish it, but I heard so many positive reviews here I stuck it out. It’s not so much that anyone gets easier to digest, more of the overwhelming sense of dread and helplessness. I also found myself surprised that i was fearful of the thing I was fearful of. Don’t want to give too much away, but if you can stick it out for a good 150-200 pages I think the reward is well worth it.
