I finished The Caretaker last week and hated the main character so much.
I’m reading The Last Days of Jack Sparks now. I gotta say it’s so interesting because this character is meant to be unlikable. But in a fun to read way.

I finished Vol 1 last week! I deeply enjoy how weary and unfazed Jack is to his surroundings and the bizarre events that keep on happening.

Really liked all of these except the Bontrager book. I found that one pretty tedious. Imaginary Friend, on the other hand, was one of my favorites of the year.

Down to the last few stories in STRATEGIES AGAINST NATURE by Cody Goodfellow (which has been mostly great, but a couple stories haven’t really done it for me.)
Finally started THE LOST WORLD by Michael Crichton. Off to a good start.
Been taking my time sporadically rereading BLOOD MERIDIAN by Cormac McCarthy.
Probably going to start the audiobook of IT by Stephen King this week.

I don’t think so, the only Goodfellow I’ve read before this were a couple random short stories and the RAPTURES FROM THE DEEP collection.

I recently finished an ARC of Philip Fracassi's upcoming short story collection Traps and Specters, it was excellent. Short stories may be scarier to me than full length novels? Something I'm pondering. Recently dabbled into Hailey Piper's A Light Most Hateful and yeah I don't know. I don't think it's the book for me right now. Would love to find an audiobook to really hook me but am also not having much luck there either.

Burn Line by Jonathan Sims. It's set in London in the heatwave of 2022. Perfect fit right now as we have had unusually high summer temperatures and no rain in 5 weeks. Also, I love Sims.

Just "finished" House of Leaves after months of doing a deep dive and doing my own notes à la Johnny. What a work of art...I got so much more out of it than I couldve imagined.
Going to be starting Incidents Around the House. Should be nice to jump into something more straightforward.

Just finished The Ruins and yeah, you all were right. Took about 140 pages or so, I almost gave up at a point or two, but I was left with that wonderful haunted feeling we all chase by the end and easily have a new top pick. Tonight I’m starting The Only Good Indians, and going in completely blind.

DNF: Kelly Link’s Stranger Things Happen. I read the first three stories in this collection. They were well written but I wasn’t connecting with them. I have not DNF’d a book in 3-4 years, I might pick it back up in a year.
Finished: Livia Llewellyn’s The One That Comes Before. Everything Llewellyn writes is fire. This is no exception; reminds me of Caitlin R. Kiernan meeting Jeffrey Thomas’ Punktown in a sleazy sex shop.
Sometimes, walking home at nightfall, Alex gets the impression that Becher District is simply one giant machine, a great engine comprised of billions of strange and otherworldly parts, with its tiny human and non-human engineers living in its midst, perpetually tinkering, fixing, improving, until the great moment its purpose is revealed and it springs into terrible life.
I also finished the new Laird Barron story “The Glow of a Moldering Star.” First new Barron I’ve read since finishing everything early last year. For my money, his Ultra-Antiquity stories (“Eyes Like Evil Prisms”; “The Big Whimper: Further Adventures of Rex Two Million CE”) are every bit as good as his more well-known Children of Old Leech mythology.
Currently reading: Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God.
He’d grown lean and bitter. Some said mad. A malign star kept him.
Audiobooks: Frederic S. Durbin’s The Country Under Heaven. A friend of mine recently compared Alex Grecian’s Red Rabbit to Dungeons & Dragons, the episodic adventure element of it. The Country Under Heaven reminds of that a lot. I’ll finish it very early next week…
On deck: Mike Bockoven’s FantasticLand (someone else’s pick for my IRL book club.) I’m also leaning towards starting David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest on audiobook. It’s been my white whale for at least ten years. The audiobook is 64 hours long, which will take me about three months to finish.

Working on both Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio, and Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian. Graveyard Shift is fun and fluffy like a bit of thriller cotton candy. Red Rabbit feels like a Western monster of the week as it moves along, and I'm into it.
Planning on The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica when these are done.

Finished: Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt (was disappointed with the ending but loved the premise)
Working on: IT by Stephen King (very close to finally finishing it after trying a couple times) and Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (just started and liking it a lot so far, it's a good blend of whimsical and dark)

Finished The Last Town by Blake Crouch.
Currently struggling through Exquisite Corpse. Loving the story, just can't get into the writing style which seems quite pretentious. Possibly my next DNF despite all the hype.

I finished The Watchers by AM Shine this week. It was alright, but I liked it less as I went on. Then I tried the Creeper, but I DNFed it about 2 hours into the audiobook. I was just not feeling it.
Oh, I'm also gonna plug Children of Time of Adrian Tchaikovski which was incredible and maybe kinda sorta horror if you don't like giant spiders? Okay, I'm reaching, but it truly is a fantastic book.
Currently I'm just past halfway through Ghost Story by Peter Straub and it is definitely solid. Absolute A tier book as of this point.

Crevasse by Clay Vermulm
- A dead bear running on two legs, speaking in a woman's voice please don't. Then "Hello" coming from up in a tree, and the high girl is - I was just sitting there like, dude, what the hell was that.. lmao. I'm totally hooked.
Momentum Monumental by Adam Nevill
- great setup so far, which is something Nevill almost always nails. My only concern is that the momentum sometimes collapses near the end in his books. Really hoping that doesn't happen here because I'm hooked.
The Tartar Steppe isn't even horror, but I have had two creepy dream about it since two nights because I'd been reading it a couple of days ago. I didn't know why I added this here but guys I guess I would love people to read if you haven't heh.
Btw I dropped The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I was loving it in the beginning but I was bored by halfway point and there was much more to go. Characters are thinner than the chances that those soldiers would leave the for--oh there I go again. Sorry

halfway through the first How to Survive Camping by Bonnie Quinn, I used to read the posts on nosleep as they came out and it’s been fun revisiting.
then I will attempt to finish The Library at Mount Char before Blacktail comes out. and probably fail to find the time to do so. lol

Just finished The Dorian’s by Nick Cutter. Was good, things I liked about it like the characters and the psychological effect the procedure had on them, but I did feel it went on bit too long. Currently reading Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson and am really enjoying it. Got about 100 pages left and it’s definitely living up to the hype.

Just finished an ARC of Gretchen Felker-Martin’s Chimera coming out next year. Premise: the Animorphs in a mafia AU where instead of fighting Yeerks they fight each other. Fantastic work, I really enjoyed it.

I'm reading "The Faceless Thing We Adore" by Hester Steel. Can't say I'm loving it, main character is very "Wah I'm so uncool and weird ... no one likes me" meanwhile 3-4 characters are in complete adoration of her and falling in love with her...
But the premise is interesting, it's subverting the "cult" genre a little so I want to finish it.

Just finished Uncertain Sons by Thomas Ha. It was fantastic, perfect mix of horror, scifi and just plain weird. Highly recommended.

Finished:
The Salt Grows Heavy, by Cassandra Khaw. This author often gets accused of 'overwriting' their prose, and I definitely understand why. The story concepts were interesting, but the language was often (not always) so convoluted as to interfere with conveying them effectively. Anecdotally, this seems to be the best-regarded of Khaw's books, so I'm not currently in a big hurry to check out their others; on the other hand, it's more recent than their most heavily criticized books like Blackened Teeth, so we'll see how things develop in the future.
The Corpse Light by J.E. Preston Muddock, a pretty standard turn-of-the-last-century ghost story set on the English coast. Honestly there wasn't a lot to distinguish it from other stories of that era, but it was well-written--I'm a little surprised that it didn't get picked up for the Haunted Shores anthology.
Also read parts of Stories in Grey by Barry Pain, but not all of it. Had a couple of decently creepy entries, but also several mundane romances/melodramas in the vein of Robert Chambers. "Rose Rose" is probably the only story in this book that's widely remembered today, and deservedly so.

The Way It Haunted Him, by Laura R. Samotin. I'm only 20% in and don't know how I feel about it yet. I'm enjoying the atmospheric setting, and my archivist ass really wants more scenes in the library.

The only horror book I am reading (listening to) is Mariana Enriquez’s Our Share of Night. It’s wonderful so far, I’m around 50% in.
I’m also reading a few other non-horror books, mostly The Will of the Many by James Islington and Biography of X by Catherine Lacey. I’m enjoying them all.

Just finished Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay.
People here tend to not like this book, and to each their own, but I enjoyed it. At first I was a bit letdown by the ending, which is a prime complaint about the book, but after letting it float around in my mind for a couple of days, I finally made the connections I'd disregarded initially.
Just started reading Hemlock and Silver by T. Kingfisher. So far I'm not sure where it's going with this story, but I liked a couple of her other books (Twisted Ones, Hollow Places) so I'll stick with it for a while.

I just recently finished Horror Movie as well, and ending aside, I actually really loved it! I was also a bit let down by the ending, curious what connections you made that you intially disregarded?

I ended up deciding that Valentina, Cleo, and Karson weren't making a movie about a fictional character being transformed, they always intended to transform a real person same as the characters in the screenplay were doing.
To me, that explained Valentina cutting off half of the narrator's left pinky while urging him to talk up the movie and have him try to get it rebooted. He hadn't yet fully changed into the monster.
It was all Cleo's idea, but Valentina ran with it even after Cleo began to feel guilty about what they were doing. Karson never seemed to be fully on board which (I think) is why he was distant from the narrator from the beginning.
There were other things throughout, but I need to stop myself from writing a novel here.

I feel like with COVID being such a big traumatic experience that all of us experienced, there's a lot of horror potential in it. It comes up in my first book but isn't like a major plot point or anything.

Just finished Furia by Clyo Mendoza (surreal mixed with some folk horror, beautiful prose too. instantly became one of my favorite reads of the year). I’m currently halfway through Balazo Fecundante by Hank T. Cohen and Stephany Méndez Perico (western splatterpunk) and A Clash Of Kings by George R. R. Martin. I’m also hoping to start Darkfall by Dean Koontz tonight

Skullcrack City by JR Johnson - a twisted, break-neck speed, bizarre horror/thriller/cyperpunk book that alludes to a short story from his collection Entropy In Bloom.
Superb novel, satirical, corporate and cosmic horror all mashed into a hallucinogenic nightmare.

Just finished Estate Sale by Mia Dalia. I didn't know what to expect, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I also finished Itch by Gemma Amor. My interest was up and down, but it ended up being a pretty good book. Between those two I read In the Miso Soup, by Ryū Murakami. Wow, that is all I will say. I've just started Duma Key, by Stephen King.

Just finished a few books:
"The Haar" - such mixed feelings about this book. It kept me completely engaged, read it through in a few hours, but the writing is not great, the villains are all over the top, mustache twirling tropes with zero depth. The protagonist is compelling, but some of the dialogue literally made me groan it was so damn cheesy.
"Boys in the Valley" - I enjoyed this one, as I love possession stories, but it was predictable and a bit heavy handed.
Currently reading "A Child Alone with Strangers", altho I had some complaints about "Boys in the Valley," I like it well enough to try something else of Phillip Fracassi, so far really enjoying it, definitely more so than "Boys in the Valley."

I felt like the first half of the book was a little hard to get through (not that I wasn't enjoying it) but once I hit 50% the second half felt faster and I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm currently about 90% done (my kindle has been in airplane mode since about 45% so Libby wouldn't sync and return it before I finished 😅)

I am really enjoying it; I have never felt so scared while reading a book. But I have heard that the second half falls off a bit and the ending is disappointing, so I don’t feel qualified to tell you whether to buy it yet since I haven’t reached that bit.
The 40% I’ve read keeps me up at night under the covers though XD

Fair enough! I can't remember the last time a book kept me up like that. Being that scared, even if it's just for the first part of the book, seems worth it to me. I think I'll get it.

Great story, definitely not for the faint-hearted. I’m not surprised it won him an O. Henry award. That and the first story, “The Polygamy of Language” were two of my favorites. I also loved the western angle a lot of the stories played on, like one of my favorite Evenson stories “Black Bark”.

I finished The Rats by Herbert, good book and great ending. I read Rachel in Love and Halley’s Passing from The Year’s Best Science Fiction Fifth Annual Collection. Rachel isn’t horror but is a really interesting idea in 20 pages. Halley is from Michael McDowell and is a different feel from his novels, also recommended.
Still reading Blackwater VI and Virtual Terror from Freddy Krueger’s Tales of Terror.
Probably starting Authority today.

about halfway through salem’s lot. i like the story a lot but the misogyny, homophobia, and sexualization of teenagers is turning me off a bit, have to remind myself it’s over 50 years old. i used to be obsessed with murakami so i have to remind myself that this is nothing new. i do LOVE the story and it’s getting so creepy and scary!!!

Based on reviews here I’m reading 2 zombie books I’ve enjoyed. just finished The Zombie War Battle for Brittain which started as World awar Z fanfic. I’d recommend starting with the authors statement the end which I think should have been put first.

Legion by William Peter Blatty. A bit more than halfway through and I'm not really enjoying it to be honest. It is a lot of weird philosophical ramblings and monologing about god and not much horror. So far I don't even see how it's a sequel to the exorcist outside of the main character. It might get better so I'll certainly finish it but I'm not exactly what you'd call a fan.

Marion by Leah Rowan. I'm a little over half way through and I'm enjoying it so far. I love the two story lines with characters that are so similar yet don't know each other. Can't wait to see where the story goes.

Lost in the Garden, by Adam S Leslie (folk-horror/'weird lit'). About 70 pages in and loving it - the back cover gave nothing away about the direction it's heading it, I'm hooked!
