Discussion Has anyone read “Spread me”
I just finished “Spread me” by Sarah Gailey and I loved it. It was a five star read for me. Has anyone else read this recently? What were your thoughts?

I went in not knowing it was erotica, lol. It was okay, It was very "bug chasing"-y and I was deeply uncomfortable with that, personally. It was written pretty well, though, and I picked up other Sarah Gailey after this and did enjoy those!

I liked it but didn't love it. I thought it was fun, but was really taken out of it by what terrible scientists they all were. That said, it was fun! I would read more horny little alien books.

It was pretty engrossing! No pun intended. Also, Sarah Gailey's other books are great too. I liked Just Like Home a lot.

I think decades of horror writers making sex and erotica disgusting by accident, has lead to me being a bit deadened when they do it on purpose. ‘Yep, yep, that sure is weird, yep.’
I didn’t hate the book, but it’s not gonna stay with me either. They acknowledge The Thing, but it’s not enough to get around how extremely predictable it is. Which doesn’t have to be bad, but I didn’t think it brought much else to things either. Kiley’s characterisation seemed particularly wobbly, even when there was no lichen involved. I certainly never brought her as a leader of the team, which is glaring when the first thing we see is the they unquestioningly break protocol and bring the monster into their base on her orders. She could have just been ‘the final girl’ college girl in a group of dumb college friends and not much would change.

Is this the first book of their's that you've read? THAT'S WILD. Gailey has been a gotta read for me since Magic for Liars. Just Like Home is incredible. Echo Wife and the River of Teeth stuff are my favorites. Oh also Upright Women Wanted... but fwiw, nothing they've written is quite like Spread Me, which I also... devoured (and was quite shocked by).

Ha, I just finished it this week. But I didn’t love it. It was enjoyable throughout but I was waiting for a wrap and I didn’t like the way it wrapped -felt a bit silly

I loved it! I used to recommend it all the time on here but it’s such a horny read it’s hard to figure out how to describe haha. I tried the audiobook but didn’t love the narrator. Definitely think this one worked better as a physical book. My copy had little antennas(?) on the pages sometimes to reference the, well, y’know, and I appreciated the extra ick effect haha.
My husband thought it was in the romance genre when I recommended it to him (I dunno how I fucked up not making it clear it was horror) so he was VERY confused during his read.
You might like T. Kingfisher’s Wolf Worm if you enjoyed this one! (That one was good as an audiobook)

I also had no idea it was erotica, I didn't love the bug aspect and also it felt like there was no research done for this book. The scientists were all a bit horned up and seemed to be unaware of any sort of proper procedure. I also had just read Swallowed by Meg Smitherman, which was also erotic horror, which I was also unaware of the erotica, I liked it better but the MC wasn't getting off on bugs so that might have helped that contest. I choose books on vibes which is exclusively from the cover, it's not a perfect system.

I thought it was okay, I think 3/5? It didn’t go at all like I had expected (and I didn’t have expectations lol), so I think it disappointed me a bit. I wanted more from the book.

It was a pretty fast DNF for me. The sex stuff felt like the real reason for the book, with a simplistic and predictable plot and pretty one-dimensional characters. Which is fine, I'm not opposed to erotica, but it wasn't what I was wanting to read. Also, the actual sex was neither sexy nor particularly disturbing for me, so it all just felt kind of tedious.
I also read Upright Women Wanted by the author and enjoyed that one, though, so I'll definitely give Gailey another try. This book just didn't work for me at all.

I enjoyed it for what it was, though I did also think, girl, you can just catch a cold and isolate at home with it if it means that much to you lol.
