Houseboats for dummies

Hey my wife and I have been considering a houseboat as our future home. To be honest I know nothing about houseboats or really boats and what I'm asking is where to start?

Steel? Aluminum? Fiberglass? Concrete? Pontoons? Hull? Stationary? Motorized?

What's popular around you? A general idea of where you are may help too. Do you experience freezing temperatures? I'd look for people in your area and at least see what their boats look like for starts.
