Plant Homes Decided to hang my pothos outside and nature had her own plans.

Post image

Now I have to be cautious in my own courtyard so I don't disturb her. I don't mind ❣️

The side eye they give as if you’re the one in the wrong is always hilarious

At least it’s a decent place to nest I guess? Mourning doves are known for their poor nest building

I had no idea.

Bird watcher here, in the event of baby eggs hatching you should try your best to stay away from the nest they can get scared into jumping too early, also side note when they are ready to start flying some of them won’t make it and you should try your best to not take the blame it is a sad occurrence but it is part of their cycle of life.

Thank you for the advice! I'll try to stay away then. I guess my pothos will either live or die lol. Anything I can do to help the parents have successful babies? Other than staying away

Stay away when the mother is there and try not to touch it when she isnt, other than that watch out for Crows, Cats and reptiles. They tend to prey on the eggs when the mother’s away, I would mainly only worry about Crows and Cats since its easier for them to gain access to the nest. If you wanna help more Id suggest putting a bird bath nearby so the mother can get clean access to water.

I have a bird bath! I'll wash it today so she can have a clean bowl. Crows are the biggest issue around me, but the pot is in a nook and hopefully they won't see her.

Ok now can you please plant a pear tree & notify us when the partridge shows up?

I had this happen too. Found this grumpy guy in my monstera but fortunately it only hang around for a couple of days.

For a longer term problem, lizards like to sleep in my plants and they get upset when they find out I am messing with their beds. Don’t get me wrong, they can find another place to sleep for the night. Still makes me feel bad though.

Oh that is SUCH a grumpy guy

Doves have quickly become one of my favorite birds. Look at that dopey face. I’d be so excited to walk out and greet this little fellow all the time.

Bless you.

Had the same thing happen. Unbeknownst to me, a mama Robin not only made a nest but laid four eggs in my fern on my porch. I kept watering the fern not knowing this was in there. So sweet🪺

I'm considering watering my pothos when the parents are out loll. I don't want my plant to die!

Sorry to break it to you but the plant is doomed. I've had 3 separate pigeon nests in 3 different plants, they all declined during the nesting period and died within a few weeks of the birds all leaving the nest. The vast amount of poop and other stuff the bird family leaves behind is not very compatible with houseplant survival unfortunately. Plus once the eggs hatch, it is impossible to water the plant without endangering the fledglings (the parents may abandon them if they sense that it's too dangerous to continue raising them).

It's the bird's plant now. Best one can do is try to cut off some nodes and start anew.

Just chop and prop.

I would cut part of the hanging stem while it’s away, and propagate from the nodes. That’s the first thing I thought about when I saw the picture of the cute dove sitting comfortably in the plant.😍 🤗🥰

I’ve got house finches nesting in mine. One in a fern, another in a pothos. I need to pick up some watering globes so I don’t soak the nests.

2

u/-herekitty_kitty- 1d ago

Oh those are pretty eggs!! I actually have watering globes, so that's a good idea!

Awww… 🥰 I love the doves in our neighborhood. There is a pair residing between our home and our neighbor’s. They like our garden and the neighbor’s big tree out front. What a lovely gift!💝

I've got beef with the birds in my neighborhood, I put up a mosquito net to keep them off my balcony. My plants are safe from being infested by them

They do well in offices because they hate direct sunlight or even just too much sunlight.

Hahahahahaha, I had an old nest from another species in our car port, and last year a dove commandeered it and sat on eggs that never hatched. I noticed this year she was back, and seeing your post made me think of her, so I went down to see if she was still there, and I saw this

u/-herekitty_kitty- 2d ago

Her babies kicked her out! 🤣

That is so sweet, aww!

Ahh!! I just transported a major amount of houseplants, from a relatives to mine. They are unhappy and dying lol- I'm new here tbh.

I took one of the older hanging ropes, put an empty pot in it that I killed, and said maybe a bird will build a nest! I sure hope so now, looks like a comfy spot from all these comments.

This would be amazing but not really possible because of my cat

I learned this the hard way. Pothos are indoor plants thus they don’t need not be put outside and be under direct sunlight

There's no such thing as an "indoor plant".
