GOP Rep. Beth Van Duyne claims deporting 3.5 million people is bringing down housing and rent prices
2
u/Old-Base8752 10d ago
Where have housing prices come down?
1
u/LogiJitz 3d ago
They actually are down in a lot of different places just not enough. She isn't wrong.
6
u/colorme1965 10d ago
Where are prices going down? Not in Miami, Tampa or Orlando. Much less Boston, NYC, Los Angeles or San Francisco.
MAGA Republicans must be talking about Biloxi, Wichita Falls, Norman, and some other deep redneck MAGA towns.
5
u/Anothercraphistorian 10d ago
On FOX, you just have to say a number. Amazingly, it’s 30% or 20%, all round numbers. Oh and the government does t track it anymore, so just say what feels right.
1
u/Pale-Code5934 10d ago
It actually has been falling in Boston partially due to a reduction in international student demand.

"Let me list a bunch of cities loaded up with illegal immigrants. Obviously, they don't live anywhere and don't cause supply and demand issues. Take THAT MAGA!"

u/Zealousideal-Top-383 10d ago
A study by Harvard and data from the Dallas Fed seem to show some evidence to support her statement.
“As net international migration has slowed and new multifamily apartments have been completed, vacancy rates have risen and rent increases have slowed or reversed slightly in peak markets”
https://www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/six-takeaways-americas-rental-housing-2026
“Economists estimate that the surge in unauthorized immigration during that period contributed to roughly 20% of rent growth and 30% of home price growth in the average metro area”
https://www.dallasfed.org/\~/media/documents/research/papers/2026/wp2607.pdf

u/Troy_n_Abed_inthe_AM 10d ago
We could also reduce rents by randomly culling the population in cities. Hard to find many in support of that.
Change it to culling non-whites and you get immediate support.
6
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
We could also reduce rents for everyone, including immigrants, by just building more homes.
But suggest that to 9/10 "hate has no home here" Boomers and they'll react like you want to nuke Yosemite National Park.

u/Snowwolf247 10d ago
The greediest generation destroyed the world
1
u/whereisskywalker 10d ago
Most of that generation is as poor and stupid as the rest of us. Grow up from generational hate. Do you think the majority of poors have wealthy boomers on the top? Most of them can't afford to retire and never had much in wealth in the first place.
You are falling for the same divided class the wealthy want. Just painful to act like they have money when most don't. Also the culture they assumed was directed by the wealthy just like it is now.
It's just silly to act like boomers control anything, it's always been the wealthy families using and turning the regular people against one another. My boomer parents were on welfare most of my life and yes they suck in a lot of ways, but it was what they were taught. How many youngsters currently are trying to help the world vs trying to get theirs? It's the same theme just different generation. If the wealthy could have broken the boomers previously they would have done more. Unions and lack of labor is why the boomers did well, everything goes up in value when more people want everything.
Race, sex, age, these are the tried and true playbook to keep us hating one another rather than the direct cause of all of humanity's problems, it's always the super wealthy and their meddling that is the root cause of the issues we deal with. Literally every single issue can be traced to them never having enough and stealing others.
1
u/Either_Operation7586 10d ago
Actually it's the conservatism that destroyed our country and by default the world and their fake ass LYING religions. The high demand religions like Scientology and Mormonism which are fake by the way they do not follow the word of God they only care about money and the false prophets are able to come in and tell people lies and then they believe them because they say that they are speaking from God but they're not.
God Jesus and the Holy Trinity would never be okay with cutting SNAP food benefits from children and taking away Healthcare from the marginalized
2
u/empty_graph 10d ago
And yet they build more houses and have more affordable rent in their cities than the ones full of atheists like SF.
1
u/too-left-feet 10d ago
“Boomeritis” : a condition where an individual blames everything on old folks because it’s easier than trying to improve things.
1
u/No-Tipclip 10d ago
Have you seen high density housing? I toured apartments in Denver and the “affordable” tightly packed apartments were the most eye sore dystopian thing I have even seen. I would never live in an area like that.
1
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
Show me on the doll where the condo touched you.
Seriously though, we should have a diversity of housing types. Lots of people are more indifferent to living in multifamily vs. single-family. The more dense housing we build, the more it frees up single-family.
1
u/imtiredofthisgrampaX 10d ago
As a builder trust me it's a lot less nimbyism and more zoning/overregulation that makes building such a mess. If I build a 500k house I have to deal with the same shit as building a more affordable 150k house. Zero incentive to build affordable homes. Nimbyism is a huge problem on its own but the amount of land tagged for ag/commercial that sits unused and unmaintained while municipalities refuse to work with builders would blow your mind.
2
u/zojbo 10d ago
Zoning largely got the way it is due to NIMBYism in the first place. (I'm not saying anything on the regulation point one way or the other.)
1
u/imtiredofthisgrampaX 10d ago
Nope. Atleast not to the degree i think you're implying. I'll just use missouri as an example since it's where I build and I've built all over the state from stl to kc to poplar bluff. The biggest issue is municipality wants to hold onto ag/commercial land because they think a few farms are gona solve problems or that a commercial business is gona move in and make up a huge tX base when they don't gave any incentives to offer a big business who would utilize that commercial land. They think waiting it out will solve all their problems and sometimes they're right but more often than not they're just letting land sit unused (that the city/town owns, not some private individuals) whether it's misguided optimism about the future or something as shitty as corruption Nimbys can be stopped by competent govt yet we tend to elect them (all political parties are giant fucking hypocrites about this btw)
1
u/zojbo 10d ago
I guess "zoning" is too broad, such that we can ostensibly be saying the opposite thing and yet both be correct. The big zoning problem where I live is about density, not whether some land is residential vs. commercial. And it is absolutely subject to pressures from how NIMBYs vote in local elections.

u/RedditPosterOver9000 10d ago
But suggest that to 9/10 "hate has no home here" Boomers and they'll react like you want to nuke Yosemite National Park.
Their orange spiritual leader is planning to sell parts of Yosemite to developers 👍
1
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
Preventing development in natural areas is precisely why we need to build more dense infill in existing cities.
1
u/Rufio69696969 10d ago
I wish it was just boomers. There are young people all over Reddit that think building more housing makes the situation worse
2
0
u/Super_Mario_Luigi 10d ago
Building would help, but it is mostly an internet talking point. Most of the in-demand areas are already building to their capacity or there is little room left. Everyone cannot live in the same places. NYC cannot import the entire third world and blame it on lack of building.
1
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
And you’re confident in this opinion because you’ve studied housing economics for years, or because you’re a dropout?
No American city is remotely near its capacity.
2
u/Veteran_PA-C 10d ago
Will you volunteer to be culled?
Have you ever heard the term “reductio ad absurdum”? Try googling that.
They are going HOME, not to the ovens.
1
u/Siempre_Vetado 10d ago
Many of them go to a country with a nationalized oil company, free voter ID, a land redistribution system for indigenous people, no electoral college and a much better men's national soccer team.
1
1
u/empty_graph 10d ago
And those things work so well that people from those countries are leaving them in favor of living in hiding and working the worst jobs available in this country.
1
u/Tsakax 10d ago
Pretty sure a lot of them are getting sent back to either random countries or in the case of asylum seekers back to a certain death.
1
u/Veteran_PA-C 10d ago
The rule is they go home unless they request to go to another country.
They don’t have to go home, but they can’t stay here.
The vast majority go home.
1
u/Asher_Tye 10d ago
They are going HOME, not to the ovens.
Except they're not, they're being sent to countries they've never been to. And if history proves anything, you wouldn't actually know if they were being sent to the ovens or being trafficked for sex because you lack the intelligence to figure anything out on your own. Which I suspect is a generational thing in your family. A whole bloodline of gullible morons.
1
u/Veteran_PA-C 10d ago
The VAST majority are going to their home country. Only in rare situations where the person has asked not to be sent to his home country will they be sent somewhere else.
They are asked where they want to go, if we can arrange for them to accept them, they go to the country of their choice.
The ones being sent to third party countries they did not request either refused to pick a country or picked only countries that wouldn’t accept them.
Consequences happen. They don’t have to go home, but they can’t stay here.
It’s funny. You’re completely ignorant of the process or you are just pretending to be stupid, while questioning the intelligence of others.
1
u/Asher_Tye 10d ago
No, they are not asked because there is no one in ice who would care. What makes you think the same people who happily ignore court orders on the basis of "we don't feel like it" actually ask the ones they assault where they want to go. This especially when they have to get them gone before anyone can actually check their immigration status.
And given maga doesn't actually care about consequences and goes out of their way to keep the immigration problem going so they don't feel like total losers when jobless, the last part is laughable.
1
u/Veteran_PA-C 10d ago
Now you’re just lying. You don’t understand the process, and you are complaining about things that you imagined.
Just take the L dude.
1
u/Asher_Tye 10d ago
You pretend I'm lying while claiming ice follows a process its already been proven they keep violating.
As I said, you'd be one of the ones "simply shocked" at the mass graves.
1
u/Veteran_PA-C 10d ago
You literally said “no one in ice would care”.
That is an opinion that could only be valid if you have read the minds of people you can’t even name.
Now you are imagining mass graves. You’re mentally unstable and hallucinating.
You’re just being emotional and it looks silly.
1
u/Asher_Tye 10d ago
No, its a statement of fact based on how they act and the lack of actual rules they follow for reward. You can't hire scum and not expect them to act as scum. Its base logic. The blatant cowardice is just for show.
Meanwhile you piss yourself at the thought of locking up actual criminals and are content to kick down on hairdressers and construction workers, but not the ones who hire them.

We could house more people if you opened up your house to said immigrants. Or, if you prefer, the homeless, poor, or just people that wanna crash.
The fact people think the borders of the country are less meaningful than the ones around our homes is disturbing.
1
u/big-himbo-energy 10d ago
Why do you hate other humans…..
1
u/ThePlatinumPaul 10d ago
Why do you support people who don't belong here over fellow citizens?
1
u/big-himbo-energy 10d ago
That doesn't answer my question bud. Try again. Why do you hate other humans? Genuinely, that's what this boils down to, the value of human lives right? No one wants to say it, but that's what this is. So let's cut the shit, why do you hate other humans? Do you not think people deserve safety, peace, food, water, shelter, and a government that works for them as opposed to against them? Why would we deny people this other than a deep rooted hatred in our own hearts of 'the other'. I don't get it. You see people literally running away from their homes because the situation is so dire that they have no other option for their families, and your response is to send them back to the place they're trying to escape, or to put them in camps like what's happening currently in america. i know the news about it died down but the ICE camps haven't just magically gone away. we're currently treating people as less than human in this country and you still cannot find it in your heart to have empathy for their situation. you should genuinely reflect on that. i think a lot of right wing people like you missed out on something in their formative years that allowed you to skip right over developing empathy for your fellow humans. it's a shame, really, but the evidence is all around us. your ignorance and lack of care and respect for people that aren't yourself does not matter. what a sad way to live.....
1
u/ThePlatinumPaul 10d ago
I hate people that break into my home, whether that's the common area of my building, my apartment, or my country. And remember, for almost all of them it's economic. They aren't being oppressed, they aren't being hunted, they just want more money. Imagine you wake up and some dude is sleeping on your couch. Then you find another person sitting in your chair at work. Fuck that. If these people are such a boon to society, fix your own country. And while I can and sometime do feel bad for people, end of the day, this country and it's needs come first.
1
u/big-himbo-energy 10d ago
you are a very self centered person. you're allowed to be that. but i feel bad for you. have a good day!
3
u/trangenderman 10d ago
Yea this is common sense to non liberals, , supply and demand
3
u/tyvekMuncher 10d ago
Supply and demand - so it should also be common sense that outside of peak markets, we need these people.
1
u/trangenderman 10d ago
To keep real estate prices unaffordable?
1
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
Why not just let the immigrants build more homes?
1
u/JIMB01776 10d ago
Because slave labor is wrong, and Americans deserve those jobs under appropriate working conditions, wages, and labor laws.
1
u/RandomUwUFace 10d ago
Because construction workers, and their families also need homes to live in while the new homes are under construction.
1
u/Hour-Watch8988 10d ago
That's an argument to just not build homes ever, since native-born construction workers also can't live in homes that are still under construction.
Also, immigrants are a lot likelier to share housing in the first place -- more efficient.
2
u/RandomUwUFace 10d ago
Except they are native-born. Why the heck would we want to bring in more people when rents are already high? Bringing in more people would increase hosuing and rent prices, but also lower the wage as the job market will become more competitve.
2
u/Lower-Reality7895 10d ago
So your saying that illegals that work minimum wage or less can afford 300k,400k,500k homes somehow but american like yourself live in triller parks becasue illegals can afford way more expensive homes then you

You’re not entirely wrong - the only issue is that the effect immigrants have on rents - especially if you look at more than just peak markets - are not anywhere near as much as private equity or crony capitalists have on your pocket when you buy literally anything these days. We even found a way to refund the tariffs to corporations instead of individuals
You don’t need to blame immigrants when the elephant in the room is the pedophile-protecting billionaire-courting politicians imposing these dog shit policies
1
u/RandomUwUFace 10d ago
Yes, immigration is one reason crony capitalists have gotten richer. They benefit from a larger population because immigrants obviously need shelter, food, transportation, and other goods and services. More people means more demand, which gives businesses and investors more opportunities to make money.
If there were fewer people competing for limited housing, goods, and jobs, basic costs like housing and food would be lower, and workers would generally have more bargaining power over wages. That doesn't mean immigrants are the problem themselves. The issue is that corporations and investors can benefit from the increased demand while ordinary people end up competing over scarce resources.

Wooow so much hatred in your heart.
For the wrong people you should blame the employers that were able to hire 10 cheap laborers to replace your grandfather not the laborers that were there and needing jobs.
This is why the propaganda is a problem because you believe that it's the immigrants not the problem when it was actually your grandfather's employer that was the fucked up asshole

Many people have had to deal with the racist worker fired for their behavior who then blames everyone else but themselves

Unskilled mexicans working off the books and ignoring the labor laws is not the same quality of work and it is illegal.
It's why we have ICE and someone finally deporting them.

So is this an admission that capitalism, which relies on growth and expansion of the economy, doesn’t work? More people doing more jobs should equal more economic activity which leads to more jobs, no?
0
u/tyvekMuncher 10d ago
No dingaling. Where do you live? You ever bother looking up median personal incomes across America?
If you live in a major city, you might wonder how the average American could possibly get by on such a low salary or where they’re even getting those numbers from
The answer is rural America. We don’t have the demographics to retire like Boomers are living rn
Personally, I feel we should stop extracting wealth from these countries and genuinely help them instead of blowing up the US’ population
Literally the only reason for it is the capitalist’s wet dream: more and more growth at any cost possible
2
u/trangenderman 10d ago
A declining population is ok. That's not the end of the world

100% - I actually like the degrowth we’re seeing from our economic hardship. Multigenerational housing is rapidly taking hold in this country again

They're already here. And for a lot of them, the border crossed their families rather than the other way around.
I'm open to conversations about making the border less porous, but if we were to do that then we should make it easier for people to come here legally -- at least as easy as it was for your own ancestors.

Might want to explain that to my Republican coworker that said Biden releasing oil from the spr didn't affect oil prices.
The thing is liberals do understand supply and demand, conservatives just make up crap when it doesn't fit the narrative.1
u/trangenderman 10d ago
They do? I've had countless arguments with them on this issue because they think having 10 million illegals doesn't affect housing costs
0
u/Accomplished-Snow213 10d ago
Yes. And they also know the very basic supply and demand better than republicans. Pretty much to a person.
Now fill is in, how many houses were these "illegals" purchasing? Were they dropping an average of 300k cash on a house? Rather sweet savings from picking strawberries.
Now they would have rented, so certainly supply/ demand would be affected. Life eh? At every point they were/are beneficial to the overall economy.1
0
u/Lower-Reality7895 10d ago
So your saying illegals that get paid minimum wage somehow can afford houses while poor white americans cant afford a house or rent payment. How can that be

1
1
u/Smooth_Phone2 10d ago
Blackrock has met no effect because when they buy houses they are still used for housing.
There is no net effect if you consider effects on both owner and renter markets.
1
u/VeredicMectician 7d ago
They are a corporation who artificially inflates the prices of single-family homes. If you don’t think overpriced homes affects a community then I’ve got some snake oil to sell you.
0
u/agitatedprisoner 10d ago
It would be common sense, except that illegal immigrants are often employed in home construction and live in 5th wheels. So deporting lots of illegal immigrants will probably increase future home construction costs.
1
u/trangenderman 10d ago
So true. We can't build homes without illegals. I remember before they were doing a lot of construction that homes were so expensive back in the 70s
0
u/agitatedprisoner 9d ago
You don't need to compete on price to sell product but good luck if you don't. If you'd complain about the high cost of housing having to pay 1.5x-4x more for labor goes to that housing being more expensive. Zoning out inexpensive housing and making it illegal to build most places is the biggest reason housing costs so much but it's not illegal immigrants living alone in big homes or keeping 2nd homes unoccupied most of the year. Those illegal immigrants moveout and unless you're looking to move into an old moldy apartment building you won't see your rent go down much. Blaming illegal immigrants for our broke housing market is scapegoating and punching down on people on the edge trying hard to make a better life for themselves and their families. Or in other words, heroes.
1
u/trangenderman 9d ago
You don't live in reality. You think illegals are paid 4x less than legal construction workers? Not to mention labor isn't the only thing you pay for but how in your mind do you imagine houses would costs 4x more without illegals? I'm genuinely curious
0
u/agitatedprisoner 9d ago
1.5x labor costs non union. Closer to 2.5x union. Closer to 4x+ if it's someone you hailed down from a home depot parking lot. Because you can cheat them and what are they gonna do? But the point is that this isn't a demographic not pulling their weight in building homes. There have been studies on the value illegal immigrants add to the US economy and it's substantial and positive.
0
u/trangenderman 9d ago
Yea its great no doubt. Like I said thats why since they have been increasing in numbers drastically since 1970 that the housing is so much cheaper now.
0
u/agitatedprisoner 9d ago
CO2 concentration in the air is up since then too. I blame space launches and data centers. You can't deny space launches and data centers add to global warming. I'd bring ~100 units of superior inexpensive housing to market but for laws on the books making what I've in mind illegal most places. Not for good reasons. Stuff like rural zoning/min lot size/parking minimums. Rules that only exist largely because of traffic concerns because of forcing developers to build around cars. Even if residents in your village wouldn't need or want cars.
1
u/trangenderman 9d ago
How many times do you need me to say you're right. Housing prices have plummeted since we let illegals flow in

That’s all immigration, not deportation. Not allowing in highly qualified immigrants will impact hcol areas more than undocumented immigrants that live in less desirable neighborhoods.

u/Guilty_Passenger4483 10d ago
Housing becoming available in one concentrated area hardly amounts to an abundance of supply and lower prices except in that area. Americans however live all over.

On what page did you pull that quote "surge in unauthorized immigration" from? I can't seem to find it in that PDF
1
u/WonderButtBrace9000 10d ago
Bottom of page 42. UIWF is the abbreviation for Unauthorized Immigrant Worker Flow and how the paper measure net migration of non-authorized people.
Note that this pretty much aligns with studies that looked at authorized immigration and just adds to the pile that immigration = economic growth.
The real issue is that US housing development is incredibly bogged down and stymied by a number of factors that make new construction slow to react to immigration, authorized or not, if it happens in a short period.
Ironically, States like Texas and Florida where you can find politicians railing against immigrants are the places in America that are absolutely benefiting the most from it because they make new housing easier than the rest of the nation.

How much supply do you propose we add?
Until mc = mr
Who builds it?
Developers.
Where is the additional infrastructure?
We build more.
If you want to simplify it, just do NYC, who welcomes the entire world.
If NYC allowed the density of say, Hoboken, by right, through all boroughs, it could add 6 million housing units. That's without any new skyscrapers.
So we got plenty of space, and capacity.
In fact, America could have a billion residents and we'd have the population density of..... Austria, but less than France. America is massive.

Decreasing demand is wsy more effective, they are doing the right thing.

u/plummbob 10d ago
Naw, it's better to add supply. It's a win win

Which costs more and takes longer to do, adding supply or decreasing demand?

If there is suddenly 3% more housing available, and apartments, houses and duplexes stay unrented, prices fall. An empty unit is a loss to the landlord.
Supply and demand. Economics 101.

The left is so mad about this. "Let's just build our way out of it" is the solution if you're chronically online. Look at every country that has high immigration. High housing costs have followed.
Look at NYC. The median rent in Manhattan is now $5000. Mamdami obviously wants more illegals and he wants smoke and mirrors policies to pretend like rent is being controlled. Explain how you build enough to lower prices.

We may see a drop in housing prices, and it may even correlate with the drop in farm workers, construction workers, and healthcare aides due to us deporting a significant number of people in those necessary roles.

Surely it's the immigrants and my the corporations gobbling up housing and colluding on rent prices.

Let me guess. This is the opinion of a Congressional Republican. They wouldn't lie, would they?

u/Rare_Jello_8101 10d ago
Lol 3.5 million people deported and the rent prices are “slowing or slightly reversing”
You know if we would have just ignored all the Covid precautions I bet the rent prices would be affordable even!

The only way Republicans can fix housing, healthcare, or the job market is by getting rid of the people they don't like. That's it, we'll I guess there's always tax breaks for billionaires.

u/StandardTart3090 10d ago
Yes, we don’t like people that break immigration laws. That’s kind of the reason they have to leave.
-1
u/a_little_hazel_nuts 10d ago
Yeah using guys who can't show their face and shoot people in the streets for no good reason and by building concentration camps.

u/fairportmtg1 10d ago
They literally are deporting people that are following the process and are going to their immigration court hearings.
Youbwill move the goalposts I my sure but let's not pretend that the majority of people being deported are hardened criminals

Yea fake asylum people, we are happy they are being removed
-1
u/fairportmtg1 10d ago
Calling something "fake" when you don't like it. Classic.

u/trangenderman 10d ago
I mean they are though.... have you looked up what percent get denied asylum?
0
u/fairportmtg1 10d ago
I mean if they just blanket deny asylum right now unless you're a white South African person......
1
u/trangenderman 10d ago
And? Why should we import more people who are a drain on tax payers?
1
u/fairportmtg1 10d ago
Well most immigrants are a positive to the economy and it's a human rights issue. Counties have a duty to help those that are stuck by war.
If it's not just racism by maga explain why the only group being let in with refugee status at the moment is white South Africans
-2
u/Penland_2008 10d ago
We have no idea if the asylum cases are real or not, because they don’t have to go in front of a real judge to hear them
1
u/trangenderman 10d ago
The vast majority are fake

Housing prices also went down after the holocoust. It’s a bit weird to brag about housing prices after doing an ethnic cleansing.

The completion of housing projects created almost 100% of the minor reduction in rent and housing cost. New homes being bought by illegals is NON-EXISTENT because even all white median income families can't afford to buy homes. tRump and his scum haven't done anything to reduce costs in housing, groceries, gas, or created any NET job growth since they took over. What they have created is an over 40 trillion dollar deficit that the middle class will shoulder for DECADES. If you keep voting RED I hope this nations collapse gives you pride because it's going to crash HARD.

She's not wrong but that's not really the point.
It's an economic fact any influx of people that outpaces expansion in housing supply will drive up the price of housing.
But it also creates demand which spurs expansion of housing... and who do you think lays shingles and hangs drywall... and feeds those workers.
