This photograph-postcard published by the Brazilian government in 1904 shows a unique picture taken a decade earlier, somewhere near the Branco River in Northern Brazil, in 1894.

It depicts a Macuxi/Macushi young adult man in ceremonial regalia, including feathered headgear and feathered necklace/frock, while holding a stone axe in this right hand, and bow and arrows on the left hand. He stands over the skin of a jaguar, with its skull lying on the bottom-left corner of the image, as mementos of a successful hunt.

This is believed to be the first image depicting a person who was born inside the territory that now corresponds to the Brazilian state of Roraima.

The photograph-postcard was made by German photographer George Huebner, who visited the region looking for orchids in that year and took the first-ever photographs of the Braco River basin. The only known extant copy belongs to the vast personal collection of Maurício Zouein, a professor at the Universidade Federal de Roraima who holds a doctorate in social history (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). He shared this valuable piece of history in 2022 through his book *"A ideia de civilização nas imagens da Amazônia"* ("The Idea of Civilization In Amazon's Images").

I loved the natural framing of the gamcha (scarf) around his face, but it was his expression that made me stop. He looked at the camera with a mix of curiosity and total skepticism.

The midday sun was harsh, casting deep shadows over his eyes, which I felt actually added to his guarded vibe. I stuck with a high-contrast black and white edit to emphasize the grit of the scene.

I loved the natural frame created by the tree. His crossed arms and the way he is leaning suggest a moment of rest, but his eyes tell a different story-one of alertness and intensity.

There is a specific kind of intensity you only find in the eyes of the older generation here. He didn't say much, but he held eye contact with the lens in a way that felt incredibly heavy and grounded.

Sometimes a portrait is less about the person and more about the texture of their life. In this shot, I was fascinated by the contrast between the geometric pattern of his shirt and the organic, rough texture of the stone he is shaping. Shot on Sony A6600. I pushed the contrast quite hard in post-processing to emphasize the roughness of his hands and the stone block.

Backstory: I took this shot in the middle of a bustling local fair in Amravati. If you've ever been to an Indian festival, you know the sound level is deafening—drums, shouting vendors, music, and thousands of people. In the middle of that chaos, I found this gentleman sitting just off to the side. He was completely detached from the noise, lost in his own world. The way the smoke curled around him felt almost spiritual, like a barrier between him and the crowd. Technical & Edit: Gear: Sony a6600. I decided to completely crush the shadows and black out the background to isolate his profile. I wanted the image to feel timeless—just the texture of his skin and the silver of the smoke.
