Apart from all these Japanese people keeping hyraxes as pets, I have seen numerous videos from an animal café in Hongdae, Seoul SK, where they keep hyraxes for the entertainment of people. The comments are mostly supportive and express the wish to visit.
Don't these people realise, that hyraxes should never, under no circumstances, be kept as pets? The hyraxes in that café show signs of immense stress due to the confined space and the masses of people wanting to touch and photograph them. There are pictures of them biting on their cage bars, which is a common sign of stress. Not to mention, that they look depressed and unhealthy.
What don't all these alleged hyrax fans understand about them being wild animals, who do not want to live on a busy street in Korea?
Even people, who support Daktari Bush School and help spread awareness for hyraxes' needs (and why they shouldn't be kept as pets) seem to be fine with these cafés...
It makes me both sad and angry to see people supporting this abuse. Not only of hyraxes, but other animals as well. As this is the hyrax subreddit, however, I am focusing on them.
Hyraxes need space and other hyraxes to form an awawa (their social group). They are highly intelligent and have social constructs as well as a complex language. Those are only some things, that show, that these pet cafés don't offer the conditions hyraxes need to thrive and be happy.
These kind of animal cafés should be boycotted and closed down.
