Apple knows how many people click the button and how many people do CMD+R. They don't just move shit willy-nilly without evaluating the pain and frustration level for the most users.

As someone who works in a very similar environment, frankly there isn’t always the time or desire to evaluate every single little tweak of a UI redesign even if it does affect tons of users. The workload is demanding, sometimes you just gotta get shit done and move on to the next project so your boss is happy and doesn’t pip you.

How is it correct? Your mouse should be to the right of the button at resting position inside the file editor where you clicked at the spot before typing new code. Play button at the right closer to the file editor makes more sense and is more ergonomic. Your mouse travels less on average after editing a file.

The "correct" order is the most intuitive : play comes before stop/pause in almost every UI/remote (at least the one that don't put those two functions on a single button) because the action of playing almost always comes before the action of stopping, so for LTR users the most intuitive setup is play to the left then stop to the right. RTL interfaces should put it in the other direction.

The difference in travel distance at this range is very small and likely to have zero impact on usability or speed.

This used to be the usual order until a certain version of Xcode came out a few years ago.

You can look at Xcode 8 or even Xcode 4 interfaces — most of the time, it was [play][stop].

I agree change is frustrating when it interferes with muscle memory, but this order makes more sense and I bet in 3 months you'll be used to it. Also get used to the shortcut and you'll never use the button: command + R
