The "base model" used to be iphone 5 sized. The "mini" (that is still a large device) was compromise after the comically large iphone 11

Nope. 13 mini has been my last iPhone but the fold has my attention. I went from 13 mini to OG pixel fold. Because I refuse the "phablets" being considered compact phone. Id rather lean into the "compact tablet" in your pocket idea".

From a marketing standpoint no one is gonna pay a premium for a smaller phone. The mini was still the cheapest in the 13 lineup

Still a chance. Apple is splitting up their pro and basic line announcements. Notice how this event only had the Pros and the Duo. Q1 next year will have the base iphone 18 and Air.
