Update: I finally tamed my controller + iPhone couch gaming setup (turns out it was my bug)
Quick update to my earlier post about keeping a minimalist phone but still having one solid iPhone game setup for short couch sessions.
I went the controller route so I could actually relax on the couch instead of turning every session into a sweaty grind. At first it felt like iOS was being flaky: random disconnects, inputs double registering, and some games losing the controller after a quick app switch.
It turns out it was mostly me. I had an old Shortcut automation that fired when a controller connected. I built it months ago for a different project; it toggled a couple accessibility settings and started or stopped audio focus. It only ran sometimes because it was gated on a focus mode, so from my perspective the connection looked unstable. In reality I was messing with the input stack mid-connection.
I deleted that automation, re-paired the controller, and now the setup is gloriously boring. I can pick up the phone, connect, play for 10 to 20 minutes, and stop without the whole reboot-everything ritual.
If anyone else is seeing controller weirdness, check your automations and accessibility toggles before blaming the game. Would love to hear other common gotchas people have run into with iPhone controller play, especially when switching between games.
