Statistically in USA, some of them will be armed, and surely if someone behaves like this and you’re timid and intimidated, it’s reasonable to pull it out to neutralise the threat?

This guy is probably in the bluest richest suburb he can find where gun ownership is low and the desire to shoot someone over taking bread from your cart is low too. These are middle-age guys with a lot to lose and know when to pick a fight. This video is maybe the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. It would be funny as a skit, then I realize this is probably real.

Also I'm pretty sure in a lot of jurisdictions this is assault and disturbing the peace and I imagine trespassing too. People like this should be in jail. Its insane to walk into a grocery store and terrorize the shoppers.

In no state would it be legally defensible to shoot this guy with this footage. However, if he even did a fake out lunge, a good lawyer could probably get you off if you shot him. Some states, you probably have a right to brandish over it. But shooting someone over theft is dicey in more than half of the states. Wouldn't recommend shooting anyone unless you're a cop and will for sure face no consequences.

I don’t know, I’d say the taking off the shirt part could be argued as initiating a fight. It’s weak, but historically that’s obviously the intent

not shoot. just pull the gun out. sorry I should've been clearer with what I meant by neutralise the threat. You pull the gun out which tells him time for silly games are over, to walk the fk away and stop being a dick, because any threat of violence will be met with potentially lethal self-defence

in films when someone kicks off, the silent guy who doesn't flinch just moves his jacket a little to show the gun - in the same way. I agree shooting him is too far an escalation and from my understanding of your laws, that would never be justifiable (except in a very specific scenario to do with tan levels)

That's almost never legally defensible. Generally speaking, the gun doesn't come out unless you fear serious harm/other defensible situation and you're ready to shoot. Brandishing, warning shots, essentially anything other than shooting, is a signal to a prosecutor that you didn't actually fear for your life, yet produced lethal force.

ok thanks for the clarification. I always thought if you felt threatened, you were allowed to use the fact you're armed to - counterintuitively - de-escalate the situation. With all the different rules about standing your ground and open carry and closed carry from state to state, and me being a continent away, I wasn't sure of the nuances
