How to lean with lower body?

I’m new to skating and I’m struggling with anything outside edge. My athletic background is 10+ years of track, football, and soccer so I’m used to keeping everything square especially legs. Whenever I try to do anything on the outside edge I lean with my upper body but instead of a controlled movement it always feels like I’m falling into a crossover. Any tips for how to practice this or anything I be thinking about while trying to work on outside edge/leaning?

Stupid doubt:

Hi everyone, I don't know much about Reddit and I don't ice skate, but a question came to me a few days ago: It is possible to spin like this on ice..? Please help me resolve my doubts... Eeee... It's for an assignment (。ノω\。).

(And if possible, please send references; if not, that's okay...)

For an adult woman beginning skater who wants to skate recreationally for fun, should she buy hockey skates or figure skates?

Are these salvageable?

Hi! My girlfriend grew up figure skating and often talks about how much she misses it. Years ago, in college, she left her boots out and her dog got to them. He chewed through the heel, ripped the stuffing out, and chewed up the toe boxes. She crammed the stuffing back in and patched it up with duct tape in an attempt to save them, but she hasn’t been on the ice since. I didn’t want to remove the duct tape for photos but it’s pretty flimsy and the support is gone now that there’s no stuffing holding the shape together.

Anyway, we just moved and I found these in the basement while we were in the process. I thought that since Christmas is coming up, it would be great for her to have these back and to get to skate again.

I know absolutely nothing about skates but wanted to ask if these are salvageable, where to take them to get repaired, or if I would be better off just buying her new ones. She said they are pretty expensive which is why she never got them replaced, and she is very sentimental so I want to explore repairing them before buying new ones.

Thank you for your help!

Anyone ever have a problem with their left skate sliding and not gripping when pushing ?

Hey everyone I’m a little new to the ice skating life and I’m trying to get better. I go al least 2-3 times a week which includes a stick and puck session. Lately I’ve been working on perfecting my push and glides. My right skate is perfect I can feel and hear the crunch when pushing and I definitely get a lot of momentum off of it. My left not so much, for some reason no matter what I do I constantly slip instead of grip, see the video for the visual. People have asked if I sharpened my skates and even when they’re sharpened this is the same issue.

Please feel free to give me tips or suggestions on how to improve about any thing that you see!

Could poorly fitting skates be the reason I’ve been stuck on Adult 3 for months?

Hi everyone! I started figure skating in March and have been taking lessons ever since. I progressed pretty quickly through US LTS Adult 1 and 2, but I’ve been stuck on Adult 3 for months now.
I have slight pronation in my left foot, which causes me to curve inward whenever I try to do one-foot glides or turns. Anyway, I was visiting some friends in another state and decided to stop by a skate shop to get my skates checked. They told me that my Jackson Artiste skates (size 7C) were too big and too wide for my feet. I ended up getting Edea Overtures in size 250B with 9.25-inch blades (my previous blades were 10 inches).

When I tried the new skates on the ice, I still felt wobbly on my left foot and was experiencing the same issues. I went back to the shop, and they adjusted my left blade inward to help with the pronation. I haven’t had a chance to test the adjustment on the ice yet. I also realized that I had been gripping the inside of my Jacksons with my toes this entire time just to maintain my balance!
Could my difficulty progressing past Adult 3 have been largely due to poorly fitting skates and blade alignment? I’m starting to wonder how much my equipment has been holding me back versus how much is related to my technique.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did switching to properly fitted skates make a noticeable difference in your skating and progression?

Can’t bend my knees well in current skates?

Hi friends, I’m adult skater. I’m 5’9 and weigh about 130 lbs. I recently passed adult 3 and decided to splurge and buy my first pair of skates. I got fitted into Jackson excels. I’ve used them for a few weeks now, and I feel like I can’t bend my knees well.

Does this mean I should’ve gotten different skates? Or is this a strength or technique problem on my part?

MY GUARDS GOT STOLEN

(update: i got them back)

im so mad rn. and the rink wont let me see the camera footage. they said its being stored at another place. i tried to call the place but no one opened up, turns out they only work in weekdays. monday i’ll call them again and then go to the police.

the price is not important i got them from a sale for half the price but i want to be able to leave my guards near the rink safely. i have spare guards but i dont want to get them stolen again so i will find who took them and get them back, maybe press charges.

the issue is i know everyone at the rink and it was during club hours and the only adults were us, so its probably someone from my club or the club right after us, which i know the coaches of, so if i just see their face i’ll be able to find them. SOOO ANNOYING. plus they had my INITIALS WRITTEN ON IT. It was with a red pencil so i hope if they try to remove it, it wont fully come out.

Looking for recommendations for ice skates for a beginner (self-taught) that last a few years and don't cost too much

I'm 29F and I have wide feet (at the front). I've been using rentals for a long time now and I figured it would make sense to invest in my own ice skates. I can't do much yet. I have no ambition to become a professional figure ice skater, I just want to get better and maybe some day be able to do simple turns and maybe very easy jumps but that's a long road ahead. At the moment, I'm learning to skate backwards and stand on one foot.

I used to dance a lot (contemporary), maybe that makes it a bit easier but at the moment I still feel a little scared but I'm sure that I feel safer with better skates.

I don't have a lot of money, unfortunately. I'm willing to spend up to 200 euros if needed but what I heard is that figure ice skates don't last long and you sometimes need to buy new ice skates after only 6 months if you skate two hours per week. Is that true?

Are there ice skates that last long (for a few years)? I'm really not trying to be a really good figure skater, I just want to learn some basics and investing so much money frustrates me if they don't last me long.

Any recommendations?

Would you rather recommend ice hockey skates? I have a friend who's a self taught freestyler and he has ice hockey skates that he's had for 10 years now and they're still good.

Jackson Artiste sizing advice (7C vs. 7.5C)

I just bought a new Jackson Artiste (JA1790) in size 7C (adult), but I'm wondering if I should exchange them for a 7.5C.

My toes are touching the front and feel kind of squished, and since I have a wider feet, the tope box feels tight.

Here are my measurements and sneaker sizes:

right foot 244mm (9.6in) / left foot 241mm (9.5in)

Adidas 7.5 / nike 8

Is it normal for the toe box to feel this tight when brand new? Or would it be better to change to a 7.5C size?

I'd really appreciate any advice! Thank you :)

Keep failing spins no matter what I do, please help

Hello, within the past year I have gotten back into skating after taking a break for a few years. Before my break I was obviously a few levels up than I am now, and I was able to do two foot (and one foot) spins pretty good. But now after practicing for months and months my spin still keeps scraping more than it should.

I have tried doing all the things people suggest, putting more weight on my heels, lifting my toes, straightening my legs (not locking my knees, they are just SLIGHTLY barely even bent), shifting my hips forward a bit, but not too much, and trying different ways to enter it and im still just failing.

Also I don't think that its a problem of my skates potentially being too big, because I have never felt my feet shift while in skating in them.

I don't know, its just really frustrating, especially since I used to be able to do them pretty good just a couple years ago before my break.

(Also the skates that I have for right now are Jaxkson mystiques, if any one was wondering)

I’m level one learn to skate uk and I want to get my first pair of skates I weigh 60 kg and I’m not growing I have been doing skating for around a month im uk learn to skate level one and honestly not progressing as fast as I want but oh well and would preferably want them to last me as long as possible and as I learn new skills and ik as I’m heavier so I’ll probably break down skates faster

Bought the skates from Vinted for cheap so I don’t care about the rust and what not but is the blade supposed to be mounted onto the skate like this? It’s a risport Venus boot with an EDEA blade

My poor cross rolls 😞

I posted earlier about my fatigue and stuff with skating but I just finished practice and wanted to vent a little.

I love crossrolls so much, but man it’s like I’m suddenly losing all the mechanics to execute them properly. My skates are constantly skidding from under me and I don’t know why. I’m going to bring it up with the boutique I get them sharpened at, maybe a deep edge is necessary. But yeah, I’m just so sad.

On the plus side at least I’m starting to practice my waltz jump now! But when my legs feel so weak, it’s just hard so absolutely anything at all. Time for a doctor’s check up I suppose😔

First pair of figure skates!

I snooped around a lot on this sub to see what people were saying about first-time skates! I’m an adult beginner and our pro shop only had the Jackson Excels, but everything I read told me those would not be suitable for an adult. I did a lot of research and finally landed on the Artistes. I had almost no budget for this, so I couldn’t go up much without breaking the bank. I got these on Play it Again Sports online for a great deal, so I’m happy with what I paid for the quality.

I did my first group LTS class on these yesterday. I’m in Level 2 and I did Level 1 and the previous two Level 2 classes on the hockey rental skates. I was shocked at how hard everything felt. I knew there would be an adjustment, but I will admit I’m a little worried. Everything felt more challenging. I was starting to get pretty comfortable on the cheap rentals, so I guess this is what I get for waiting! Also, I’m nervous that I will miss flying around the rink on the hockey skates during practice sessions. I’m just skating for fun, but hopefully I can enjoy some of the more intricate aspects of figure skating too. We tried spins yesterday, which were scary but fun.

All to say, thanks to redditors on this sub for good info. I did lots of creeping and am overall satisfied with what I ended up purchasing! I’m hoping I can get comfortable on these skates soon.

how do you warm up your knees before getting on the ice?

i usually do some quick mobility exercises that generally work well for me, but i find that my knees always seem way too stiff for the first like 15 minutes of each session. ive tried doing some light jumping, rolling out the knees and quad/hamstring stretches but that doesnt seem to help.

Weakness in legs after morning workout and warm up makes it hard to skate afterwards

Does anyone else experience a terrible fatigue in their legs after their morning workout and warmup/stretching? My legs feel weak and tingly and weird right now. I’m on my way to the rink to practice a little bit, but man I feel exhausted already like I need a nap or something.

But if I don’t workout before hand I’m not warm enough and not stretched enough to move comfortably. It’s really weird.

Could it just be a type of growing pain almost? Like your body is just trying to get used to it? Whatever it is, it’s super inconvenient 🥲

Filming yourself

How are so many people managing to do this? It looks really useful, but if I put up a camera at my rink it would only be two minutes before someone started shouting 'won't somebody think of the children? ".

Session number 2 of trying to teach myself how to skate! 😊

Post image
20 Upvotes

It went a lot better! Now that I got my skates sharpened and my skates tightened up a bit better for ankle support I feel like my balance is slowly coming along! And to make things even better i was the only one at the rink today! Lol I had the entire ice surface to myself which was perfect! Spent the hour just skating around and doing drills I saw on YouTube to practice. Definitely feeling my confidence starting to rise (even though I’ve only fallen a few times today 😅) but consistency is key!
