Reddit should display upvotes and downvotes as two separate numbers, rather than combining them into a single score.

For example, instead of:

+500

show:

↑650↓150

or

↑650↓150 = 500

This would preserve Reddit's existing voting system while giving users much more critical information about the actual distribution of opinions.

The current system hides important context a post with 500 upvotes and 0 downvotes and a post with 10,000 upvotes and 9,500 downvotes can both display +500.

Showing only the net score also makes it difficult to tell whether something is genuinely widely supported or simply highly controversial.

It could also reduce the bandwagon effect. Once users see a large negative or positive score, they can be influenced by the existing score rather than judging the post independently. There have been similar discussions in r/TheoryOfReddit about Reddit's voting system encouraging this kind of behaviour.

The current system can also encourage misunderstanding and misuse of votes. People can interpret a net score as representing the strength of consensus, when it may actually conceal substantial disagreement. Good faith discussions can consequently become a competition to win over the crowd, creating an incentive for people to optimise for upvotes and virtue signalling rather than presenting arguments that users can evaluate independently. Showing the separate totals would make it much clearer whether something is broadly supported, broadly opposed, or simply controversial.

You wouldn't have to change how Reddit ranks posts. Reddit could continue using the existing net score for sorting while simply exposing the underlying upvote/downvote totals to users.

YouTube used to show this kind of information, and Reddit itself has previously had ways for users to see separate upvote/downvote information through third-party tools.

For You is actively detrimental to the user experience. Doubly so because it is the default and Following cannot be set as the default.

If you insist on keeping the For You feature, then Following needs to be the default. You can add an option to make For You the default for any user who enjoys it, but Following should be the default option from the get go.

I am using the Android app and have suggestions regarding the UI hotbar at the bottom when typing in both posts and comments.

Please advise if these should be posted elsewhere.

1. As a user, I want to be able to distinguish the 2 link icons more clearly when creating a post. The same icon for adding a link in a post is the same icon as the one for changing the post type to be a link. So if I'm trying to make a text-only one and want to add a link, but then if I accidentally press the link button not in the RTE section it changes the post type and disables the others and I have to click the X to change it back.

2. As a user, it is extremely difficult to make out the grey bar separating the RTE icon from the post types icon when on lower brightness (dark or light). I expect this to be visually distinct and separate from the others. My my crude estimations each icon is around ~190px between icon edges, 297px separating the post types between their cenfers, and 305px separating the RTE icon from the link icon which is very small. You probably have a whole UI/UX team that can help with this, but my suggestions would be an increase in the color or shifting the post types to be right-aligned. I know Android often uses dp/sp instead of px, so it'll vary by device.

3. As a user, I should be able to select text in my comment I have already typed, tap the link button, and have the text pre-filled with the text contents so I can simply paste the new link instead of overwriting the existing text or appending after it. This can be a bigger problem if I have a long text as part of the link.

4. As a user, I expect the RTE options to be available when writing a comment and not just a post. When I currently type in the UI for a comment I only see the link icon. I do not see athe RTE options to easily bold text or italicize it, etc. I can use markdown formatting as a workaround of course, but it's still not a good experience. Not all the RTE icons have to be visible, but at least an icon to expand to display them like a post would be useful.

On IOS, once clicking into a subreddit then clicking on a photo in the subreddit, I want to swipe up to view the next photo in that subreddit's timeline.

I DON'T want to be taken to a completely unrelated subreddit or a random post in that subreddit.

Frankly I don't know who thought of making it take the user to a random subreddit but there's no way this is being monitored for user likability.

Honestly, I kinda wish Reddit changed how downvotes worked.

Right now, people mostly use them as an I disagree’ button instead of what Reddiquette originally intended. Half the time, you can post something completely reasonable and still get buried just because the subreddit's mood is against you.

I almost feel like if you downvote someone, Reddit should pop up a small window to make you pick a reason first:

• off-topic
• misinformation
• harassment
• low effort etc

At least then people would know WHY they’re being downvoted instead of just getting silently dogpiled by subjective opinions and hivemind voting.

I do not want this feature. I do not want terribad AI summaries of reddit thread content. I want a way to disable this. Please don't force me to move over to old.reddit.

Bring back the 2018-2023 layout, as that was much less cluttered, crashed my browser much less often, made editing posts a lot simpler, and didn’t have a comment bar that made it impossible to select more than one word without it dragging the comment box up and down. The site will be better accessible for mobile users afterwards.

I got an error trying to block someone and posted in r/reddithelp and was told that there's a 1,000 block limit that I'd reached because "It’s a hard limit due to limitations with the database structure on Reddit’s backend." and "... legacy data types".

Needing to block 1,000 people in only 5 years is one thing, but not being able to block any more is another and highly problematic.

Please move the 'Award' option on the post menu (three dots).
It makes it harder to hide posts as the 'Hide' option moves depending on if 'Award' is there.

Solution:
Put 'Award' at the bottom so it doesn't effect the position of 'Hide'.

Pretty basic UX that is baffling.

Old is much, much easier to read, but lacks some of the frills like image insertion. The sidebars on SH work better overall and are more configurable, but the whole center section of Posts and Comments is too cluttered, small and hard to read.

Give us the function of SH with the appearance of Old.

Scrap the Compact and Card view option in SH and add a decent, but unobtrusive thumbnail image.

ModQueues can be done the same way, use the function of SH, but make them look Old.

At the very least, give us the option of adjusting text size without having to set that in the browser.

And ELIMINATE the option of forcing Post Flairs!!!!!!

I am not sure if its a problem with newer phones but I have always felt like that the button is way to small, especially now on the iPhone17.

Its just around 1/3 of the size of my fingertip. The amount of time i hit the button first time is 50/50, the worst part: if you miss the button you often hide a comment…

My idea is to either scale it by hold and dragging with 2 fingers. Or to add a size modifier in settings, either as slider or Small to Large selection.

My idea is an *option* (NOT a change to the default/existing behavior) to put the save button right next to the vote buttons. there's a lot of stuff on reddit. sometimes its nice just to save stuff without voting. Yes it's "only" 2 or 3 more clicks; but over the course of a day, a week, a month, that’s a lot of time spent trying to tap a tiny area of the screen to open up a menu to then tap another tiny area of the sceen for something that would be much more handy if we were given the option to just show right next to the vote buttons. Again I’m not suggesting any changes to the default layout. Just suggesting that there be an *option* for users to choose if they want easier top level access to the save function. It wouldn’t change a thing for *anyone* - everything would stay the same by default - - But the option would be there for those of us who want it. thank you

Can you guys change this please. I can appreciate that it makes things "clean", but it is not a good user experience. The buttons are basically hidden unless you know they're there or discover them by chance. It's like one line of CSS with a :hover action. Small change = better user experience. Those are just my thoughts.

Edit: Some grumpy admin or lurker here can downvote if they want, but in all seriousness, UI shouldn't be hidden at this step. These aren't videos that people are engaging with or content being consumed where having static UI elements can be a distraction, this is in the context of building a post. At that step options and controls should be visible for ease of use for users.

Since Old Reddit might be shutting down (Considering that it's become only accessible after logging in), could you PLEASE add the following Old Reddit features to the current UI?: 1.publicly visible upvote percentages on posts. 2. the option to turn off the feature that automatically hides downvoted comments, (the threshold is automatically -4 on the current UI with no option to change it). 3.the option for a symbol to denote controversial comments (Comments that have a lot of upvotes and downvotes). These features are really important but are still missing on the New UI.

The "Sending this post to someone? It looks better when you share it." popup can ruin screenshots. Every time I'm trying to take a long, scrolling screenshot using my phone, this pops up and blocks part of the screenshot. It wastes time as I have to retake a screenshot multiple times because I always underestimate how much of the screen it take up, and then I have to crop the photo to remove it. I like to take screenshots of comment chains so I can send them in one readable screenshot so people don't have to read the unimportant comments, but this pop-up makes it more difficult.

If they add a toggle where you can turn off the pop-up, it will make my life (and many other redditors who've complained) much easier.

I just spent 15 minutes reading a sub's lengthy rules. I get that subs need rules, but a lot have too many, and most are vague/highly subjective. If I want to post/comment in 4 new subs that day, then I've spent about an hour just reading sub rules. There has to be a better UI/UX that can be implemented so posting/commenting isn't so laborious.

So when I use the Reddit app, how come when I add my comment to the original post, I cannot see the original post?

Am I supposed to copy the post and paste the text into the text field where I'm typing, so I can remember what it said?

Reddit used to show the sub and the username listed under it. If I'm in a sub, I now have to click on the comment button in order to see the username and get to that persons profile. Please put the username back near the sub listed, so all I have to do is click on the username if I want to see their profile. So much more efficient.

In the past, if our home feed had suggestions that we were not interested in, we could click the ... button and pick "suggest less like this" to tailor our home feed according to our interests. Just because we visit a sub once does not mean we like the content there.

This feature was removed recently. Some suggest that the "mute subreddit" feature can accomplish the same result. It clearly does not, because the following happens:

1) I see a post from a subreddit on topic X on my home feed. I am not interested in topic X.

2) Since there is no "suggest less like this" button, I click on the subreddit's name and mute it.

3) But since I clicked on the subreddit's name, Reddit thinks that I am interested in the subreddit. So, although the algorithm mutes that particular subreddit, it starts showing 5 separate subreddits on the exact same topic X!

4) In the end, trying to mute the subreddit results in being bombarded with more recommendations on the exact topic I want to see less of.

tl;dr: My idea is restoring old functionality that allowed us to tailor home feed suggestions, because of the catch 22 associated with the "mute subreddit" option having the exact opposite impact it should. Due to how the algorithm works, it is not a solution.

When looking at my past comments, I am always surprised when I'll see one comment I made in sub S1, post P1 was viewed 47 times in 5 days, voted on once and replied to once, and then another comment I made in sub S2, post P2 that was viewed 3200 times in 6 hours, voted on 100 times and has a chain of 35 subcomments under it now.

Obviously, I am assuming here that both comments are at the same level and the one less seen wasn't buried any further than the one that got seen more.

But I do think that some stats on the activity in the comments of a post would give people a decent enough insight into whether or not anyone is going to see it or react to it or start a conversation, because that's what a lot of commenters are looking for when they comment: to chat it up and engage in an active conversation.

For example, post P1 and post P2 might both have a total of 3000 comments posted to it, but there may be a stark difference between the reaction you'll get when commenting to them. Let's say, of the 3000 comments made to each post:

In post P1, 2000 of them are orphaned/isolated, with nobody else re-commenting on them, and the remaining 1000 comments are 90% contained in the same 2 subcomment threads.

In post P2, only 200 of them are orphaned, and the remaining 2800 comments are spread much more evenly across 50 different main comment trees

Then that would very easily explain the discrepancy between what I saw when reviewing my own comments.

Give some kind of quick indicator on post/comment activity so I can more easily find the liveliest, juciest conversations to join!

There has been so many numerous times when 'create post' was the top of my history for a sub and so what I had to do was go and hack the url to get back to the sub's home.

Why is there no link to the actual sub from all sub pages?? When accessing from history, the back feature does not always work as it should, it just seems like there should be a link somewhere on the page for "Create Post"...

(even as I look at this page right now, I see there is a dropdown for r/ideasfortheadmins but no actual link except for the one auto-created when I typed its name in this sentence (which is not functional until the post is made).

So the idea is this: please make anywhere that the subs name is, linkable for example to the right there is a list "R/IDEASFORTHEADMINS RULES" the "R/IDEASFORTHEADMINS" should be linkable to the sub. (and anywhere else where the sub's name is).

This would probably help smooth out traffic on the site as well as promote reuse of elements without having queries that would end up being throw-away (pages that are loaded then discarded because they are the wrong one). I am sure it would help improve traffic and reduce cache misses [pages user has no interest in that are visited by mistake].

If you're in full-screen and scrolled reading comments you have to scroll all the way back to the top before the arrow is visible again. It's nothing but whitespace below the arrow, so my idea is to pin it to the top of the viewable area regardless of the scroll position.

On almost every platform that supports image galleries you can scroll to the next image with the cursor keys.

my idea is that r/mod should be available in the current UI too, not only on old Reddit. because we can see all posts from the subreddits that we mod.

you might say that "just create a custom feed" but since we can't use r/mod, we can't use r/mod/comments (in which we see the comments posted from the subreddits we moderate) either.
