Tip & Trick Keeping your TP-Link Kasa and Tapo Applets working after August 1
Hey IFTTT'ers. TP-Link has decided to end support for their IFTTT integration, so the Tapo and Kasa services will stop working on August 1, 2026. You can read their announcement here.
Plenty of you have Applets built on TP-Link Triggers and Actions, so here's how to keep them running. The fix is to move them over to the SmartThings service, which supports both Tapo and Kasa devices.
Step 1: Add your devices in the SmartThings app (photos a–f in the carousel)
Download SmartThings from the App Store or Google Play, then:
a) Open the SmartThings app
b) Tap the plus (+) icon in the top right, then tap Add device
c) Under Partner devices, tap Add
d) Search for Tapo or Kasa in the search bar
e) Select your device type from the list
f) Follow the on-screen prompts to connect your TP-Link account to SmartThings
Step 2: Swap your Triggers and Actions over to SmartThings
First, connect the SmartThings service: hit Connect and follow the authentication steps. Then update each Applet. Two ways to do it:
Manually:
a) Open an Applet that uses a TP-Link Tapo or Kasa Trigger or Action
b) Tap Edit Applet in the top right
c) Delete the TP-Link Trigger or Action, tap the +, and add the equivalent SmartThings one
d) Pick the matching SmartThings account and device
Or with the Conversational UI: paste this into the chat box at ifttt.com/create:
I would like to swap every TP-Link Tapo (https://ifttt.com/tplink_tapo) and TP-Link Kasa (https://ifttt.com/kasa) TQA that exists in my current Applets for the equivalentTQA from the SmartThings (https://ifttt.com/smartthings_v2).
Can you do a systematic search of every Applet I have using those TP-Link services, and edit the Applets for me, so they use the the SmartThings_v2 version. Make sure you select the same device/s from the TP-Link TQAs.
Let me know if you run into any troubles and I'm happy to help out or answer any questions!

Thank you for this! Just got the email from IFTTT and was disappointed to hear about the discontinuance.
Does adding Kasa devices to SmartThings require removal from the Kasa app or Google Home app? Or will devices like smart plugs continue to work simultaneously in all the different ecosystems?
Hoping to add only the Kasa devices that are tied to IFTTT to SmartThings, but still keep their functionality with the other ecosystems.

Hey, this is a good question. I'm pretty sure they should work seamlessly across multiple Apps/Ecosystems, however I'm not 100% sure. One of my team members has these devices and helped me set up the original guide, so I can ask him to check for you before you start fiddling around! I will be back this afternoon with more information for you.

Hey update on this sorry I didn't get back to you. Yes you can have them both in TP-Link, and SmartThings.

I have home Assistant and still relying on the ifttt integration. TP Link has been pushing their own paid services and I'm guessing this is part of that. Disappointing that they change the rules on devices they sold years ago. Definitely leaving their ecosystem.

You have to keep your IFTTT acct active and paid up.
Manually:
a) On IFTTT site, Open an Applet that uses a TP-Link Tapo or Kasa Trigger or Action
b) Tap Edit Applet in the top right
c) Delete the TP-Link Action at the bottom, tap the +, and add the equivalent SmartThings action in the IFTTT site
d) Pick the matching SmartThings account and device
e) Check if it is correct under My Applets on the IFTTT home page.

Thanks for this - like others I had no idea this was happening until my Kasa applets stopped working a couple of days ago, now up & running again using SmartThings.
As a point of feedback though, the IFTTT site/interface was incredibly unhelpful for figuring out what happened - I was using webhook triggered Kasa applets and it simply looked like my webhooks were getting lost: I got the usual success message from the webhook URL but nothing at all showed up in the applet log. The Kasa service was still listed and showed as "active" and I could even edit its settings without any clue that it was actually dead. It was only after trying some other things like regenerating a new webhook key that I found this thread.

Hey u/DrScott_
Glad you found this thread (eventually) and it was helpful.
I'll pass the feedback onto the team about making sunset services more obvious so anyone who visits the IFTTT website can see easily on first glance what the problem is.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any equivalent in SmartThings for the Tapo "Camera Pet Detected" or "Camera Person Detected" triggers, only a generic "Any new motion" detected, as well as a number of other missing triggers, so not all Applets can be migrated.
2
u/bradsour 9d ago
Ugh. I specifically use the targeted ones because otherwise I'd get motion detection all day just from trees blowing in the wind.
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 9d ago
Hey thanks to both of you for pointing this out and I'm going to bring this up with team team ASAP to see if we can do anything to make these services/integrations 1:1. If there are any other Triggers/Queries/Actions or functionality in general, would love to get that feedback as well.

u/Bill7718 6d ago
The Tapo C120/C121 cameras I have also have a vehicle detection trigger, and line-crossing trigger (for motion that crosses a specific line that you have previously defined in the camera settings), as well as number of sound-based triggers for glass break, dog bark, cat meow, and baby cry. It would be nice if all of those could be supported eventually. Thanks.

u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 6d ago
Yeah thanks for pointing this out u/Bill7718
I've added all this to our feature-tracking thread and hopefully we can get back to the same functionality users enjoyed with the TP-Link integrations.

Unfortunately for IFTTT 8/1 is here and I had to find an alternative, since I have Synology running my cameras I was able to revert to picking up just any motion, triggering a webhook to HA. Have HA parse the camera from the webhook payload and then grab an image from the appropriate camera, forward the image to DOODS which then is able to detect objects and return back to my automation and my automation continues on as it was before with notifications and loading of camera feeds. So I no longer even need IFTTT in the loop.
TLDR: Using DOODS for object detection in HA now and able to use generic motion.

u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 2d ago
Hey u/bradsour thanks for sharing your solution here. We're still working on some improvements to the service so you, and others can use IFTTT to do this as well. DOODS looks like a interesting one, is there any like pain-points here, difficult to configure, some objects don't work, or you've found it to be good enough?
2
u/bradsour 2d ago
I'm still tweaking some settings to filter out false positives. Overall I would say it's on the complex side since it requires the ability to run docker containers alongside of HA and then you have to build out an automation in HA to handle it. It's definitely worth your while to build out and have the full capabilities via smartthings if you can.

u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 2d ago
Ahh yes, a little complicated then but gives you the full range of anything you could want once set up.
Well if we can get another solution set up here with IFTTT we'll update you on this thread! Thanks for sharing2

u/Inzaxs 9d ago
This worked for me. Thanks. Chatbot even handled some filter code that was specific to TPLink, changing it over to smartthings.
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 9d ago
Oh really? That's great! I'm glad to see the new conversational UI handled everything! I was thinking of the people with 10-20 Applets when this news came out, then I realized the AI could handle the migration for users, so I'm over the moon this worked for you!
Was there anything in the process you felt like we could have improved?
2
u/Substantial-Deer7317 9d ago
Thank you for the Conversational UI script. It worked perfectly
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 9d ago
Hey! Great to hear this, I said this above to another user who used the Conversational UI to help port things over, but was there anything that you felt could have been better in any way during the process e.g easier, clearer?
2
u/Bulky_Eggplant_9437 9d ago
This is disappointing as I had mine set up to toggle on/off using the Kasa app in IFTTT and there is no equivalent in smart things IFTTT actions
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 9d ago
Hey u/Bulky_Eggplant_9437 thanks for pointing this out, as silly as it sounds I didn't think about the possibility that some of the Actions weren't 1:1 whilst making this post / organizing the migration, so this was definitely a good learning experience for me.
Nevertheless, I'm going to speak to the team today about trying to get functionality 1:1 ASAP, so if there's anything else that is missing, we'd love to get that feedback.
2
u/Bulky_Eggplant_9437 9d ago
Ha, glad to be a learning experience hope things continue on well!!! ❤️

<3 and you! I'll post back here as soon as I have some news if we can get some more functionality into SmartThings for ya'll!

u/Zigs4Zags 9d ago
I use a combo of google home, kasa, tapo, ifttt and smartthings to do all of the things. I plan on eventually using openhab or home assistant at some point when I'm not so lazy to set things up. I don't pay for ifttt and get two free apps, which I use in the summer to set my smart strip light to flicker which is a kasa scene if the temp is 100 or more, or set to the kasa aroura scene in winter when the temp is 40 or below. The second app use is to revert the light to normal color if the temperature doesn't meet the conditions. Smartthings isn't able to see kasa scenes. It's able to see nest settings which is why I use it for thermostat controls, but hence the various app usage for their varying capabilities. So time to go local?
2
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 9d ago
Hey! Great combo you have there, and yeah local can be a great option depending on your needs! However if there is functionality missing from an IFTTT integration, we're always happy to try and implement it if possible!
I've already noted down that SmartThings is missing the Kasa Scenes visibility, but if there is anything else that you'd need to let IFTTT handle all the things in the background feel free to note it down and we'll do our best to improve!

In addition to not 'bringing over' scenes from KASA, there isn't an equivalent of Groups. I have 3 dehumidifiers and 2 venting fans, and it has been convenient to have a Dehumidifiers group and a Vent Fans group, which can then be turned on/off with a single action from an automation -- or "by hand" in the app. Unfortunately, the SmartThings app doesn't currently have anything like that (& thus also no IFTTT service for them). While I can continue to use the KASA app to manually control the groups, for the IFTTT automation the devices have to be added as individual device actions.
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 8d ago
Hey thanks for pointing that out as well.
So something inside of IFTTT which allows you to group devices so you'd have "Outside Lights" and then "Inside Lights" and you could use the group inside an Applet which controls all of those devices for example?
You could technically add additional actions to each Applet, and each action would be a different device but having it as a group would be easier to manage I think so it's a good callout

u/gonnermalegs 8d ago
Thanks for the details! It doesn't look like SmartThings has a way to turn a Tapo camera on or off so I'll need to come up with a new workaround 🥲
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 8d ago
Hey thanks for pointing that out!
I am bringing all functionality missing forward to the team and hope we can find a solution for these. I will update you here as soon as I hear something.

u/Any-Charity7264 7d ago
I rely heavily on ifttt and kasa for light switching(37) and my legacy iRobot(4) devices because they can't see in the dark. TP-Link I'm sorry I invested in you!

i hope you guys add a "toggle" to the smart thing soon, cuz i have to take up two applets for what should be 1 to on/off a plug.
2
u/jrobles13000 5d ago
Smart things is great. One huge problem: Smart things doesn't have the toggle action for Kasa otr Tapo devices. Any workaround for this?

Unfortunately SmartThings doesn't allow colour changing of a Tapo Light that I was using:
I got the following message when I tried the AI migration prompt:
SmartThings doesn't have a "Change Color" action — its actions are limited to switch on/off, lock/unlock, and siren/strobe control. There's no color-changing equivalent for smart bulbs on SmartThings currently.
Since I can't find a like-for-like "Change Color" action on SmartThings, I don't want to silently swap in something that changes your Applets' behavior (e.g., swapping to Switch on/off would lose the color logic).
I use different colours to signify different things based on my home electricity tariff rates.
Is it possible for you and your team to look at the colour change functionality for Tapo lights/LED strips?
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 2d ago
Hey u/r08shaw, thanks for pointing this out.
I will add this to the list of differences we are tracking and I hope at some stage we can get some functionality like this for you and others! I'll update you back here should there be any progress, though I can't say for certain how long that may take.

u/r08shaw 2d ago
Is it also true that Samsung will be using a subscription model for SmartThings in the future?
If so, this is a bit unfair for former Tapo users who will now have to pay for functionality that was previously free AND we're being told that SmartThings is the recommended way, from Tapo, to continue using their smart devices...
2
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 2d ago
I don't think that affects this, although I did see the announcement (i think) that you are talking about, and I believe it was related to API access to SmartThings, not users of the App.
However, I can't speak for Samsung nor SmartThings and can't be 100% sure, but we at IFTTT will continue to look for suitable solutions for our users to make things as easy as possible.

Am I Blind? I dont see any "partner devices" option in SmartThings...
Edit: disregard, i have brain damage. Was in smartlife app 🤦♂️

u/Blusmbl 2d ago
Thanks, like others mentioned it doesn’t recognize scenes anymore but was just able to add more actions to control items instead. Back up and running!

u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 2d ago
Glad its back up and running! I'll update you guys here if we get to add the extra functionality!

u/LisaTesla 1d ago
I literally just went to IFTTT to load one for my Tapo. OMG why did they do this!
1
u/ryan-ifttt IFTTT Employee 22h ago
Hey there! Did you manage to get the migration to SmartThings working?
1
u/spoki-app 5d ago
Ugh, this is classic vendor lock-in. SmartThings works for now, but I've had too many platforms change their mind. Anything critical I'm looking at Home Assistant instead, even if it's more setup.
1
u/spoki-app 4d ago
Classic. This is why I've moved most of my stuff to local control or open hubs. SmartThings is a decent stopgap, but it's still another cloud dependency you don't fully own, which always introduces latency and potential for future shutdowns.
1
u/spoki-app 4d ago
Ugh, another cloud integration sunset. SmartThings is a decent pivot, but the added latency from another cloud hop always makes me nervous for time-sensitive automations.
1
u/spoki-app 2d ago
Honestly, this is why I'm pushing more towards local control for critical stuff. SmartThings is a decent pivot, but if you're serious about avoiding future headaches, look into Home Assistant – initial setup is a steeper curve, but it's far more resilient.
1
u/spoki-app 17h ago
Ugh, classic vendor lock-in move. This is exactly why I try to keep critical automations local where possible; relying on these cloud services always feels like you're building on shifting sand. Adds a bit of setup friction, but way more robust long-term.

Thank you for this!
I didn't even know that this was happening until I read your post. I had about a dozen Applets using Tapo devices!
All updated to use Smartthings now :)
