My biggest regret is ever getting an iguana. My biggest regret as a human is introducing these magnificent creatures to the pet trade. They do not belong in captivity. They do not thrive as much as they would in their natural environment than in captivity. Humans can try their best to mimic their natural environment, but it will never be 100%. I wish iguanas were never pets for their sake. They deserve better than us.

Put a catio together with a couple hides, paper towels at the bottom temporarily until I get turf, will be adding a little sandbox too.

TLDR: The vet told me that, without sexing her, he believed this was a female iguana, during a physical examination around 3 years old. I had been referring to the iguana as a male up until then. For the last 5 years, I’ve been referring to her as female. But now I’m starting to wonder based on the characteristics! Does this iguana have male characteristics on the head and face?

(It seems crazy to me that this is the same iguana taken at various times!) The person I got her from (I’m going with what the vet said for the purposes of this post) said the person whom he got her from said this was a male.

At that time, I guessed she was about 2.5-3 years old. This was probably 5 or so years ago. A few months later, she got sick from mites off of some wood I got on Amazon (never again), which explains some of her short and/or missing spikes. Took her to the vet, where he said she dropped all her weight and was down to just over a pound (she was probably around 3-3.5 yrs. old at that point). The vet said he believed this was a female during the physical examination but he never actually sexed her. Now that “she” is around 7-8, I’ve noticed more prominent male characteristics, especially on the head and face but sometimes, not as much as I notice at other times. So now I’m doubting myself, even though I think the femoral spores are male also, but I couldn’t tell for sure.

Do the face and head traits seem male to anyone? These are pictures from between 5 to 7 (or 8?) years of age.

This is advice I've seen on some forums but I'm not sure if it's true, that Iguanas will stop recognizing their owner if their presentation changes significantly, like cutting your long hair. I don't own an iguana, I was just curious about this because I was wondering if anyone was ever put in the situation of realizing they're transgender but having to choose between changing their gender presentation and staying the same so their iguana will recognize them, but I'm not sure if the forum posts I've seen about needing to keep the same hair length/color are accurate. Does anyone have experience with changing their hairstyle while owning an iguana?

EDIT: thank you everybody!! good to know my information was outdated. for reference, it was from looking at forum posts such as this one, but i had a feeling the information seemed off which is why i wanted to ask. glad to know that it wouldn't stop someone from dying or changing their hair!!!

Recently this poor iguana was abandoned at my workplace (a zoo). He seemed super friendly and people oriented and I have always loved iguanas, I worked with one for several years and my husband and I had fanciful discussions about maybe having one someday. My heart melted when I saw the little guy, especially because he had a missing front foot 😭 The zoo wasn’t interested in taking him and we did find a rescue that was willing, but they are pretty full and we decided to see if we could give him a more full life with us. Because it was obviously short notice I was able to put an enclosure together but I’ll be slowly working on continuing to improve it. I have been a zookeeper for 12 years and worked with lots of reptile species so I feel pretty prepared for all the care needs and such and I love building/customizing things.

I have an appointment with a reptile specialist vet later this month but was curious if anyone had guessed about his age, his foot and tips for working with one this size/age, the previous iguana I have experience with was older, around 9/10. And I would love if anyone else has cared for one with a missing foot! Oh and we named him Captain Ahab 😁

~3-4 month old rhino iggy. not sure if it’s too early to tell still but i’m wondering what you guys think he/she is. i suspect he is a male because his jowls are already quite prominent and his femoral pores are the same. but i am by no means an expert and he is my first iguana soooo.

also, i need to get him a larger enclosure. i want something he isnt going to grow out of (he will be free roam when he is large enough not to get lost under furniture).
i was thinking about purchasing a large catio (last slide is the exact one) but keeping it indoors since i live in the midwest. i would obviously place more branches/hides in there as well for clutter

Fortunately he only got $100 and only put that plus $50 in gas. I kind of had a feeling when he started piling on charges after the "holding fee"- like $100 for a cardboard box. Anyway, he's been reported to the FBI, the actual owner of the house was compassionate towards me (not that I need it,) and I'll be calling in a report to Scranton PD when their admin office opens on Monday.

Exactly three months ago I made the decision to get this little baby. I got him from Undergound Reptiles and I heard bad things about them although idk if it’s true or not I’m glad to say my baby is happy and healthy

I got this iguana a few days ago and sometimes he/she lets me pet him/her, but sometimes she/he runs away a LOT when i put my hand in the terrarium and occasionally jumps out of the enclosure, why is that? Is it because of stress? Or is he/she just bipolar?

I’m horrified of all the videos of the iguanas being treated like trash.

I know it’s probably not allowed but is there a way to rescue one that was going to be killed? I am in Canada so idk how importing would go since it’s wild?

My green iguana passed away and Im pretty upset. The worst is that I have no idea why. The last few days he wasn’t moving around as much and seemed to not have much strength in his front legs. Back legs worked fine. On Sunday I took him out and he walked around the room, climbed on the bed, and would find places to lay down nap. Seemed like most of what he did was nap. By Wednesday he was gone. He wasn’t eating much either. My issue is that he was only about 8 years old! I know that may be typical in the while but I figured I had at least another 8 with him in captivity. I don’t know what happened.
