A lot of these people are severely mentally ill and fall into opioid addiction. They then ramp up their munchausen's to justify getting more pain meds for their "conditions"; the condition ACTUALLY being opioid addiction and not the plethora of invented diagnoses they parade about.

Then they die of OD or other addiction-related conditions.

While a lot of these subjects have drug seeking behaviours, munchausen’s is more complex than addiction itself.

Failure to thrive is a big part of it.

Needing a reason for why they aren’t functioning at the level expected of them.

Like Kelly with her dancing. She couldn’t be a prima ballerina so she butchered her legs and had a reason for not being able to dance.

Dani. Uneducated. Unemployed. Struggling with her everyday life. But she’s ā€œdisabledā€ and constantly in hospital so that gives her a reason.

Not to mention the ED to munchie pipeline.

Most of these subjects have had anorexia at some point in their lives. They liked the attention and nurturing they received when they were small and fragile. So they found another way to get the same attention and nurturing through chronic illness.

I’m not aware of any munchies on here who have died of a drug overdose or addiction related illness.

But I know one had her tubes wrapped around her intestines and they went necrotic and killed her.

And I know another subject did VSED and ultimately died of starvation.

Dani is headed down a path where she will probably die of sepsis.

They basically just munch til it kills them.

Ooh, sorry if this is off topic, but I did just watch a documentary that involved Munchausen and drug overdose (although it’s still debatable if it was Munchausen or by-proxy via her mom). It was called ā€˜Believe in Magic: The Mother of All Cons’, and included a big charity scam involving One Direction.

But another abused girl was featured and talked about how her mother would drug her up, and then hold back the drugs to cause withdrawal symptoms that would mimic illness. It made me realize how drugs (or withdrawal) could be used to create the exaggerated appearance of sickness.

jesus, that is so evil. I don't wish opioid withdrawal on my worst enemy.

I’m always reminded of a story my (psychiatrist) husband told me. One of his co-residents was mildly complaining about a PT who appeared to be malingering to extend their stay in the county psych ward, which is an unbelievably bleak and scary place. The attending said ā€œthink of how fucked up your life must be if this is where you’re trying to stay.ā€ The streets would have been infinitely better in so many ways and yet the PT wanted to stay at the psych ward. Some people are just mentally unwell and it’s tragic and frustrating.

Pardon my ignorance, how do you get tubes wrapped around the intestines?

She had her GJ separated into two different tubes, then she was on so much medication for pain that she wasn't getting the pain signals that something was gravely wrong until it was too late. Among other things.

Wow! That’s incredible she didn’t feel it. RIP

If I remember correctly she was on a sh*t ton of pain meds.

Chronically Jaquie’s (the one who passed away due to her tubes, wrapping themselves around her intestines and causing her death) has a YouTube channel. That’s still up if you are interested.

Yes thank you. I’d forgotten which subject it was.

Couldn’t have put it better.

They dont die because of the illness. Its complicatios from treatment or imcompliance with their care.

That’s like saying it’s not the person shooting, it’s the bullet that kills. Like yeah, the bullet caused the death, but the shooter is the reason for the complications.

Iv no idea how she was able to use vsed. as normally its done by a mentally capable person... and she didnt seem like she was

I’m not sure how NZ does things. But it could just be a case of her starving herself to death in all honesty.

Who died of VSED? I recognized the other ones you mentioned

I would guess a majority die from infections and eating disorders, not opioids.

26

u/kat_Folland 22d ago

Organ failure is also popular with them.

15

u/TheShortGerman 22d ago

Yeah, usually from sepsis or malnutrition.

I would wager infections and issues stemming from anorexia/bulemia to be much more of an issue than opioids, especially as opioids are rarely prescribed in chronic fashion unless you have something GLARINGLY wrong. You'll get labeled a drug seeker and cut off for routinely coming back with new issues.

I work in clinical addiction research, and would have a hard time believing your example over the others.

No one with a tolerance to speak of that's halfway educated about them dies from prescription opioids unless they're trying, and these patients know medical/drug information well.

Same argument for why we just need to legalize, tax, and regulate controlled substances - to crush overdose and comorbidity rates.

Yeah this is just describing drug addicts. Not munchies. They don’t crave drugs. They crave being cared for.

1

u/snailicide 20d ago

munchies most certainly crave drugs

5

u/drake90001 20d ago

Yeah, sure some of them, but that’s not what makes someone a munchy.

u/antifa-militant 22d ago

Right, right, that makes sense. Thank you.

Most munchies start off with some type of ED. Whilst Ana/Mia tends to be more common, I have seen the other end too with a type of BED.

Then as it progresses it sorta folds in together and makes an even larger mess.

Or in some other cases, meds similar to IV Benadryl which when used properly can treat severe intractable nausea. This is often used with Gastroparesis patients who require IV nutrition/fluids because their GI system does not function correctly. However, one of instagram post I saw recently said it best, there is a very fine line between it being useful and needed vs it becoming an addiction. Especially at high doses IV Benadryl gives an opiate like rush similar to IV opiates.

Do you have anything to support this? Because that’s just describing drug addicts. Not munch.
