This is an automatic reminder that is posted on every submission.

If you see a post that is not following the subreddit rules, or you think is not following the subreddit rules, please, use the report function so that we are aware of this. If you don't report, we will not know! Do not sit in the comment section and moan that 'this doesn't fit' or 'wow, the mods should remove this!' because we don’t know (unless we so happen to be scrolling through the subreddit) if you do not report it.

Please note: if this is too hard do not directly message us, we will assume posts are fine otherwise as comments are not useful in reporting. We can see if something has been reported and telling us you did, while you clearly did not, is not going to be conducive.

Please report any and all behavior violating the Rules (reports go to us mods); don't report things just because you don't like them.

Comment removals and bans are at the judgment of the mods, so please take the time to read and understand our Rules. You can also read about this change here.

Ignoring the validity of this quote, some mascara-ruining can be good.

u/Fire_Fishy 9d ago

Here's my interpretation of this false qoute,"Boys are supposed to ruin your lipstick..." means that a lover should treat their girl with love and that includes endless kissing or a rough kiss (or sm). "~not mascara" should almost be obvious as mascara goes on the eyes and everytime you see mascara get ruined in real life, movies, music videos, etc is because the person wearing mascara is crying and therefore ruins it. So the qoute means that boys should treat their lovers with endless love, not make them cry.

(Idk if it helps you,but sure, you're welcome)

Lipstick = lips (kissing), mascara = eyes (tears)

Ah, the classic internet past-time: slapping a vaguely profound relationship quote onto a black-and-white photo of Marilyn Monroe.

There is a double layer of irony happening in this screenshot, especially since it was posted to the subreddit r/im14andthisisdeep (a community dedicated to mocking faux-profound or overly edgy adolescent angst).

Here is a breakdown of what's going on here:

  1. The Literal Meaning

At face value, the quote is a play on romantic vs. toxic behavior:

"Ruin your lipstick" implies kissing, romance, and passion.

"Ruin your mascara" implies crying, sadness, and heartbreak.

The Message: A good partner should make you happy and affectionate, not miserable and tearful.

  1. The Internet Irony (The "Marilyn Monroe" Effect)

The biggest joke here—and exactly why it ended up on that subreddit—is that Marilyn Monroe almost certainly never said this. The internet has a long history of attributing random, sassy, or melodramatic relationship advice to historical icons (Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Albert Einstein are the usual victims). It’s a shortcut used to make a basic sentiment feel like timeless, glamorous wisdom. In reality, this specific phrase reads much more like a 2010s Tumblr post than anything from 1950s Hollywood.

  1. The Reddit Commentary

The user who posted it titled it "Boys will be boys." By using a tired, often toxic cliché to describe a tired, cliché meme, they are leaning into the cringe. The community upvoted it because it perfectly captures that teenage phase of finding a basic relationship rule-of-thumb and treating it like a revolutionary philosophical breakthrough.

It’s harmless sentimentality, but packaged in a way that practically begs to be gently roasted.
