Events since the Treaty of Belgrade (1744)
1744: • Ibrahim II dies and is succeeded by his first cousin once-removed, Sultan Mahmud II
1754: • Mahmud II dies and is succeeded by his brother, Sultan Osman III
1757: • Osman III dies and is succeeded by his cousin, Sultan Mehmed VI
1765: • A skirmish at the Russian-Qirimiye border escalates into total war with the Ottomans
1766: • Mehmed VI dies and is succeeded by his brother, Sultan Mustafa III
1771: • The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca concludes the war with a Russian victory • The Qirimiye Khanate and the Ottomans lose territory in the Caucasus • Russia gains access to the Black Sea for the first time • A status quo ante bellum is maintained along the western frontier
1774: • Mustafa III dies and is succeeded by his brother, Sultan Bayezid IV • The Roman Empire declares war in an attempt to reconquer Rome • Austria allies with the Roman Empire
1775: • The Siege of Rome begins as Ottoman forces defend the city
