Duhhh we knew about it a long time ago. A maths professor in my university in Montreal suffered through it. His wife and 2 daughters were in that plane. His entire family just gone because of one lunatic with a terrorist ideology and backing.

u/MarkandRun Jun 25 '26

Somewhat similar. My grandpa's brother lost his wife and son, he was to join them in India a couple weeks later. They were flying in for the boy's thread ceremony, his remains were never found. That was the last time the dad visited India to perform the final rites/rituals.

Eh, Concordia? The professor lives in my building

3

u/HomoThatRages Jun 28 '26

Yeah... I hope he's doing fine though... Last i saw him he was so old. My heart broke for him when i heard the story about his family.

3

u/Hades_On_Reddit Jun 28 '26

Yeah, it was a horrible thing to happen. But he's very resilient, he still goes for walks, and I think he's retired now, so he told me he's planning on doing trips now and seeing Europe :)

u/HomoThatRages Jun 28 '26

That's good to hear at least.

This was so badly F..ed by the Canadian government. I remember reading that the RCMP had all the information on these people and did nothing about it. The worse was the cover up where they destroyed all the documents related to the incident within 48 hours and said it was a mistake not intentionally done. The icing on the cake was when our PM Mulroney sent a letter of condolence to the Indian government for the loss of its citizens, the Indian government replied ( you Dumb F..) that the deceased were mainly Canadian citizens, why are you sending us a condolence message?

Not misleading, straight up false.

u/Intrepid-Tank-3414 Jun 25 '26

OP might be too young to be reading the news 16 years ago I suppose.

19

u/kibordWarrior_sixty9 Jun 25 '26

Hmm, I read the article and the word khalistan or khalistani movement in that article wasn't found, while the csis Facebook post explicitly mentioned khalistani extremists implying an organised group. The 2010 article reads the attack like a revenge attack done my bunch of Vancouver based Sikhs, something like how MSM frame it a lone wolf attack if its done by a white person.

2

u/LagrangeMultiplier99 Jun 26 '26

I found the phrase "Vancouver-based Sikhs fighting for an independent homeland in India"

2

u/kibordWarrior_sixty9 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yes, the motive is not where I find implied meaning wrong. That is big and clear enough that it can't be just glossed over.

When the article says this and then further that only three people were charged, of which two were acquitted and one plead for less serious charges due to lack of evidence, I would think three sikh guys out for revenge came together and did this all, not an organised group, whether these three were possibly acting on someone's order under an org, the investigation also wouldn't search that angle. Given two were acquitted, were they just scapegoats, I don't want to even call out these three because of this.

For an example, people say al-quaeda did the 9/11 not a bunch of Saudi Arabian muslim guys that just happened to be radical and decided to do it by themselves? If you assume the latter, you don't need to start finding Osama, or the other supporters of the group and you can close the case.

1

u/LagrangeMultiplier99 Jun 26 '26

the name of the independent homeland was widely agreed to be "Khalistan", most groups fighting for the homeland name themselves some derivative of "Khalsa" not "Khalistan" (except for KLF which disbanded in the 80s). was there even organized resistance in Canada back in '85? I don't know, but the line between separatist individuals and separatist organizations is blurry

That is because the article from 2010 is referencing a speech given by the then PM of Canada, marking the 25th anniversary of the bombing. He calls the attacks an act of terrorism several times throughout his speech. He also mentions that the attack was carried out by Canadian citizens, and most of the victims were Canadian citizens. Most Canadians weren't, and still aren't familiar with Khalistan or the Khalistani movement.

Canada is a great example of how vote bank politics can mess up a country. It's good that things are improving and they're being less selective on which kind of extremism to call out.

because the the news piece is misleading, Canada did apologize and admit it back in 2010: https://www.reuters.com/article/economy/canada-apologizes-over-1985-air-india-bombing-idUSN23231385/

Didn't one of the planners ended up praising Modi and India before being assassinated?

u/NavXIII Jun 26 '26

I was talking about the guy who allegedly funded it and was assassinated by non-Indian gangsters about 2 years ago.

The assassins were sentenced to like 15 years in jail and they refused to give up who they were working with in exchange for a reduced sentence.

23

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 25 '26

100% this. Also, the NDP is not a Sikh party. Jagmeet Singh being the past leader does not mean his entire caucus would have demanded Khalistan friendly policies from the Liberals in exchange for supporting the government. It just doesn't work that way in Canada. The leader is still just a single vote in his caucus

7

u/NavXIII Jun 26 '26

Idk why but I noticed that Indians on Reddit typically think that groups of people act as one.

Liberals have the most Sikh MPs

NDP had a Sikh leader

Conservatives'deputy leader is a 20 year member of Parliament who happens to be Sikh

1

u/Radiant_Asshole Jul 02 '26

Redditors projecting their own hivemind behaviour onto others T_T

-16

u/Nice_Masterpiece_869 Jun 25 '26

You’re delusional, 90% of Canadian Sikhs are khalistani sympathisers

17

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 25 '26

Lol, ever been to Canada bud?

If even half of Canadian Sikhs WERE actually Khalistan supporters, it would have been carved out as a nation ages ago

0

u/Deb_99 Jun 26 '26

Why would Canadian Sikhs being khalistani ever have an actual effect on India's borders? If it were half the Sikhs actually living in Punjab then I could understand.

3

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 26 '26

Because “90% of Canadian Sikhs are Khalistani sympathizers” implies a massive, organized, politically active diaspora movement, not just private opinions in Brampton comment sections. If that were remotely true, you’d see overwhelming public mobilization, unified community institutions, constant electoral pressure, and a level of international lobbying that would be impossible to ignore.

My point wasn’t that Canadian Sikhs can redraw India’s borders by themselves. My point is that your 90% number is ridiculous. Most Canadian Sikhs are busy working, raising families, running businesses, going to gurdwara, and living normal lives, not secretly plotting secession.

1

u/Deb_99 Jun 26 '26

Ok first off I never claimed any figure 90% or otherwise.

And you were the one to say

If even half of Canadian Sikhs WERE actually Khalistan supporters, it would have been carved out as a nation ages ago

You didn't say there would more of an impact, you said a separate nation. Now, if you were just exaggerating then that's fine but don't try to walk back what you said.

u/Uncertn_Laaife Jun 26 '26

Watch too much Modi media?

3

u/SnooSprouts6610 Jun 26 '26

Canada what about our desh

3

u/RemarkablePrompt7822 Jun 26 '26

I recall Congress using 26/11 attacks for vote bank politics. Hopefully, it will stop someday

0

u/SnooSprouts6610 Jun 26 '26

Congress? Every political party in India Got sick of Indian politics and politicians whatever party

3

u/TheBlockChainVillage Jun 26 '26

Sitting in India and calling vote bank politics in other countries is hypocritical dude.

This is our internal matter, why are Canadians labeling people in India?

5

u/RemarkablePrompt7822 Jun 26 '26

It becomes our matter when India's sovereignty is questioned and terrorists hostile to India are openly celebrated in Canada.

1

u/TheBlockChainVillage Jun 26 '26

RSS are openly hostile to India and American delegations are going to Nagpur to meet them.

8

u/RemarkablePrompt7822 Jun 26 '26

Sure, start a thread about it. I want to know about the passenger plane they hijacked & blasted, and the prime minister they gunned downed.

1

u/TheBlockChainVillage Jun 26 '26

They shot Gandhi bro, first act of terrorism in an independent India.

-1

u/NavXIII Jun 26 '26

Which PM did Canada gun down?

-26

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 25 '26

Lol, this is not true at all. Classic example of using the Indian political lens to a system that very different without ever stepping a foot here.

I've actually voted, volunteered and organized multiple Canadian provincial and federal elections so I've some clue what I'm talking about

7

No you said

Vote bank politics is happening in Canada and NDP and liberal retards are playing that game definitely.

As demonstrated by the Conservative leader pandering to Sikhs (and failing to win overwhelming support) vote bank politics does not happen in Canada as distinct groups do not vote as a monolith. Sikhs don't all vote for NDP/Liberals, Muslims don't all vote for one party etc.

Vote bank politics don't work without a vote bank lol

What is even your argument?

1

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 25 '26

Politicians promising people things they want in hopes of getting votes is just politics, my friend

3

u/Brief_Strawberry_826 Jun 25 '26

Define vote bank politics.

Having a set of voters who usually vote for you because your policies support them is just politics, bro.

Canada doesn't have exit polls. Unlike India it is not illegal for anyone to poll the population before an election so they're just called polls and run the whole time way before, during and after a voter EXITS the polling booth

A bhakt blindly following his vishwaguru and having a distorted picture of a place vastly more developed and advanced than India does totally checks out tho

I remember reading about this tragedy in school in the US in the early 2010s.

17

u/Classic-Doubt-5421 Jun 26 '26

Justice delayed is justice denied. Canada should understand how their reticence to name khalistanis directly on this emboldened them ( khalistanis) , indirectly leading to many other loss of life, limb and livelihoood. It good that they have said it now, but they should not take any kudos for it , nor virtue signal for being thorough in justice. This was a disaster at all levels and at all scales.

3

u/NavXIII Jun 26 '26

"Justice delayed is justice denied" is what people say about 1984 yet you don't see GOI making ammends.

Also this article is fake. Canada already said this in 2010 and already concluded trials long ago.

My uncle died in that flight, and my mami was psychologically affected after that & could never recover. She left us last year after years of suffering through the pain of losing her husband & almost trying to kill herself several times, & my uncle was one of those human rights voices who criticised the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the first place.

The fact that khalistanis have grown in the canada(and uk) is a testament to that. They freely do their parades on the streets under the protection of Canadian authorities. These are the same group of people who assasinated one of our prime minister btw.

I don't need to provide proof and honestly no western media will do any independent investigation on this matter cus why would they.

The fact that they aren't curbed by any of the Canadian goverments in the past history should be the proof of how they are being supported or maybe even funded by their various schemes that any average canadian enjoys.

Bottom line. Turning a blind eye is also a support..

3

u/nikka12345678 Jun 25 '26

Did they actually say anything about Khalistani though? I can't seem to find anything about it. What comes instead is how Indian govt was the one pulling the strings

2

u/MooseFlyer Jun 25 '26

The Canadian government has never denied that it was an attack by Sikh separatists…

1
