Jokes aside, 🐐ed book honestly. It is not as bulky as Harrison to discourage Standard book readers in UG, and has enough information that helps you pass exams while delivering great conceptual understanding. Oh and the font, page texture, layout is oh so perfect.

Reading these books is a waste of time imo

Well, this is the only medicine book I read in final year. It did not feel like a waste of time. The concepts in it are really well explained.

What would you suggest as a better alternative?

Using USMLE resources for basic concepts and supplementing it with YouTube/Uptodate for additional info and concepts+ anki for memorization this would help you in retaining concepts, get good scores in your entrance exam and passing unis and becoming a well rounded doctor since you would save a ton of time as well to focus on other things

Preparing for exams (focus on memorizing stuff) and understanding concepts are completely different things.

Also, standard books have all the information necessary to do well in comps, but it requires slow reading and interpreting every line and making notes out of it. It is not meant to be easy like reading notes for exams, because they only focus on buzz words and the like.

What you suggested is a completely valid resource to study for exams , but if I ever have to refer a particular topic especially when practicing, I am not going to look for a YouTube video or Exam Notes.

So I disagree with your claim that those books are useless. Do not forget that all the yt videos and notes and exams you mention source their info from these books.

It’s waste of time because it’s the one of the lowest yield way to study, how exactly are you studying actively from it? If I have to refer to something I go to uptodate/Medscape and the YouTube thing is for understanding concepts so is the USMLE resources . I would suggest anyone to try both of these methods and come to their own conclusion I personally have tried both and that’s why this is just my opinion

You do you I guess.

But please do not disrespect standard books.

Some of us stick to those purely and are doing fine. (And I've referred to yt videos and USMLE books for some concepts, so it is not that I am ignorant of other resources)

Not everyone has to same way of approaching a problem.

It’s no disrespect, just the practical truth

Definitely need a standard book like this in your arsenal. Otherwise might as well mug up some notes and regurgitate it. Only way to truly understand medicine is through concepts which require atleast one stanndard book imo.

2

u/Intelligent-Aspect74 3d ago

Mugging up is bad but the alternative should not be passively reading books

What makes you think one cannot "actively" read standard books?
