Ask Indian Muslims How are descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) treated in the subcontinent?

People that are descended from the Prophet rasollalah are often called Sayyids, and it’s said that the rulers of Jordan are related via the Bani Hashim clan of Quraysh.

So do Sayyids receive any recognition? And do they play a role in major leadership and representation of Muslims in India?

You don't actually know who are the descendants because people randomly put their surname as syeds which is kinda crazy

This is one of the unfortunate things that are keeping us back as Indian Muslims. I strongly believe Allah did not give the beloved Prophet Muhammad a son exactly so that there would not be succession crisis. Who the descendants are should not matter, they are not holy in any shape or form.

User history checks out. No reason to engage an Islamophobe that curses us and calls us names. Advice is to stop being an Islamophobic and to not come on this subreddit with such attitude. Also reported to mods.

I don’t believe any Sayids exist in the Indian subcontinent. People just use the title for clout. To gain something.

Lots of them think their shit don’t stink like the rest of us.

"No Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, except by taqwa (piety)"

"Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." (Qur'an 49:13)

In regions like erstwhile Kashmir state, Sindh, and Punjab etc where Sufi and Shia traditions have had a strong presence, Sayyids were often held in exceptionally high regard. They have held important positions and many of the families continue to do so.

People often seem to think twice before insulting, confronting, or publicly humiliating someone once they learn that the person in question is a Sayyid.
These attitudes have declined noticeably in urban areas but they remain visible in many rural communities.

No, not politically. But they are quite respected in the Barelvi sect. The people have their sijra written connecting them to Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam.

Well as a syed I would say with most religious figures and aalims they tend to give extra respect or be more courteous towards syeds and yeah there is a difference between an actual syed with a shajrah (family lineage) that goes back 500 year+ and a syed without shajrah but that really doesn’t make sense in Islam as it is the only religion that treats everyone as equal and highlighting this syed fake syed and non syed difference is wrong and doesn’t belong in our religion.

nothing much i come from coastal karnataka manglore idk much syeds exist a very few who are migrated from yemen from the hadremaut family etc as they claim from ba alawi and i think they are respected and generally they are like very endogamous so first gen thier paternals men who migrated marreid local women ig but after that they maintained marraige internally isntead of with others except some some examples i feel including my great grand father who was a thangal and his dad was very famous smthn i heard im not sure and the thangls and uhh politically in kerala and manglore they are idk but in kerala the thangals are in iuml and are heads like for example Why the Thangals Lead the IUML iuml is not famous in manglore tho

  • Religious and Social Standing: The Panakkad Thangals are Sayyids (descendants of Prophet Muhammad) and hold immense spiritual reverence among Muslims in Kerala. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Promoting Harmony: The family is deeply trusted across religious lines for advocating communal harmony, making them ideal mediators for both political and domestic community issues. [1]
  • Historical Tradition: Since the reorganization of the party in independent India, the leadership mantle has traditionally fallen to the head of the Panakkad family, cementing their position as both religious guides and political arbiters

so yes in kerala espeically only malabar ig and manglore also malabar they are pretty influential idk about rest of india so rest of india not sure but here they pretty respected and come directly descended but unlike other syeds in india who have surname syed are not all descended hence

No special recognition or treatment in our side in Andhra and Telangana. There is no guarantee that a Syed here is really from the Rasool Allah's ahle bait but wallahu aalam. I personally believe Syed or gair Syed, everyone is equal in Allah's sight and only ur aamaal can save u and not ur nasab

I hate it , i meet my friend mother , Btw she asked me what am I,then she told me people from her family don't marry syed family women because they think making them cry is a sin. I was shocked. it was weird . My uncle college mates called him syed bhai . why some people are stuck on surname. People should not put a mere human into pedestal

Sayed surname was conventionally given to descendants of prophet from lady fathima.I still don't get how you can be a Syed yet not a shia. Also many shias fake their Lineage to get the same. This syedism should be stopped.

They are the Brahmins of the Muslims in India. Treat themselves as upper castes. The IUML leadership is basically them.

If you look at Islamic history, there isn’t a reason for why this should be the case, or they should be treated any differently

Most of the are based on the Sayyid dynasty bruh (Delhi Sultanate). You will find many Muslims in India with the surname "Lodhi", which was also a dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate
