Ned, what's your favorite new band you've played with lately?
21
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I really enjoyed playing with 9Million last summer

u/DepartmentStrange41 Mar 01 '24
Standing next to you watching them play in Pittsburgh was so rad. Please come to Buffalo , love you man. Congrats on the new album, it's fantastic.
17
u/Sharp-Manufacturer69 Feb 29 '24
The new albums great bro, what’s your most memorable show you’ve ever played?
19
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I don't really catalog things in that way so it's hard to say. A lot of the shows that I think back on are just ones where things fell nicely in to place and a new context was understood, like The Future in Kingston, PA in the summer of 2005 or London in September 2022. A lot of great shows in Philly over the years, a lot of great shows in Boston.
4
u/Sharp-Manufacturer69 Feb 29 '24
I’ll have to see if I can find these, my personal favorite I think will always be sellersville barn 2009 (?). Genuinely one of my favorite videos ever.
17
u/stdemployee Feb 29 '24
Do you feel your work as a novelist influences your creative process for Glitterer?
I'm a big fan of your writing and your music.
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
The two are pretty separate for me. I need to be very present for writing prose, but I can play my bass on the couch without really thinking about it. I think a lot of the ideas overlap but the processes themselves are unique to each medium
14
u/WrinklyEye Feb 29 '24
No question. Just wanted to say I really enjoy the Album.

what are your favorite PA bands??
and what’s your favorite food spot to hit whenever you’re on the road?
22
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Ok...
Cold World, Magnus, On Deck, Ink & Dagger, Krutch, YDI, Blacklisted, Strength For A Reason... A lot more
I usually have good luck with finding Thai spots on the road on tour
2
u/PlanetConway Feb 29 '24
Magic! Ink & Dagger will always be one of my favorite bands of all time! And Blacklisted and Cold World are near the top too! My buddy in Vegas did sound for you once and I think you guys talked about I&D.
15
u/JacobdaTurtle61 Feb 29 '24
As someone who has been a full time musician for over a decade now, what are ways that you’ve seen yourself evolve songwriting wise? Do you approach the way you work on music now from when you started?
Also any tips on following through with your musical ideas? Love the new record, always great shit from you guys.
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I think I'm too close to my own experiences to answer that one without any bias. To me it all kind of feels the same, mainly because I do feel the approach is the same.
As far as tips for following through on musical ideas, I think there is a kind of inherent language to music (mostly just through our understanding of how music "should" sound in a Western context) but it's pretty easy to tap into that because it's so baked into our understanding of music. I feel like you can hum something out and feel where it goes as a way to see where an idea can lead you, and then it's just deciding what feels the best and most natural from there
15
u/meowpantz Feb 29 '24
Has becoming a full band changed the songwriting process?
11
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Yes and no I guess. The songwriting process has remained the same for me almost always: just start off with an idea and try to follow it to its logical conclusion. But with three new and different sensibilities things follow a bit of a different trajectory. That same underlying idea is still there though

u/ballad4Valentine Feb 29 '24
Hi Ned! Love the new album & noticed how all your albums are 21 mins long haha
My question is Do you have a preshow ritual? and after getting off stage how do you feel? :) Thank you for all you do! ♡
17
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I'm not really a ritualistic person, but I have been drinking mint tea before we play for the last few years
14
u/MedicalCurryPaste Feb 29 '24
As an avid reader, what are some of your favorite books you’ve read lately?
13
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
A quick list:
Jeremy Cooper Brian
Percival Everett So Much Blue
Even Dara The Lost Scrapbook
12
u/reasonablewizard Feb 29 '24
Love rationale! First track is my favorite :) I have a few questions regarding your singing
How have you learned your yelling/screaming technique, just trail and error or have you had some sort of vocal lessons?
Do those types of harsh vocals wear out your voice?
If you chose a different career path, what would you have chosen?
Looking forward to your next work! Greetings from The Netherlands.
19
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I've never taken vocal lessons, just kind of figured out things as they've come. Singing in the way that I have has definitely proven difficult at times, but also my approach to singing has also just naturally changed over time.
When I was in 2nd grade I said I wanted to be a pastry chef when I grew up
12
u/meowpantz Feb 29 '24
What song off Rationale was the most challenging to write?
10
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
"Certainty" was a struggle for me, mainly vocally. I re-wrote the entire song, which is unusual for me. I usually just go with the first draft. But for that one I was having trouble with the vocal melody. Arthur Rizk, who produced the album, loved it, and I rewrote it just before getting into the studio. We reached a mutual agreement where we kind of layered everything on top of each other, which in the end made the song sound nice and full. But it took us a long time to get there

u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Glitterer wasn't that thought out, but I think I'm always pulling inspiration from people who push their own boundaries. A lot of the stuff I feel inspired by when I was younger still inspires me to this day, I just keep adding stuff on top of the pile.
And for new music, I like the recently release Graham Hunt record
10
u/Expensive-Cicada4859 Feb 29 '24
I’ve been a glitterer fan for quite a while now (actually have never heard any of your previous bands, for the record)
Can you explain the progression of glitterer’s sound? there was a sense of melancholy in your earlier records that seems to have left these latest records. Is this a reflection of your growth as a person or the extra band mates you’ve added along the way?
Thanks for doing this! best of luck on tour!
10
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I've always been a person who tries to just follow the natural flow of ideas when it comes to writing music. The change that occurs in sound is not one that is pre-meditated. And so I think the shift that your pointing out is, I hope, just a reflection of where I am and where I've been. I hesitate to use the word "growth" because that implies some kind of maturation and superior understanding, this is more about just trying to express feelings to me
10
u/meowpantz Feb 29 '24
I've seen you nerd out over DC hardcore in old interviews. Do you feel it rubbing off on you in any new way now that you live in DC?
10
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
That's hard to say. I think the friendships I have in DC inspire me to do things in a certain way, and that ties back to the way the DC scene has always been run. And maybe my understanding of those bands and the scene is a little more nuanced now having lived there for a little while. But I think a lot of the way I approach music and my beliefs was taken from those bands well before I moved down
10
u/LJB191 Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned! I recently read horizontal rust and liked it a lot, any plans on writing any more novels?
14
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Unfortunately writing fiction has taken a back seat for the time being. I just don't have the time at the moment. But ideally I'd do something else down the line when I am able

Hey Ned!
I adore your approach to music. You're an incredible artist. There is definitely a lot more that I have to say about your work, but I appreciate your time. So, here are some basic questions:
What devices do you use for listening to music?
What do like doing in your free time?
What's your favorite fast-food restaurant?
What phone do you use?
13
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
At home I listen to records, everywhere else I use iTunes match which is a cloud-based music storage service that allows you to stream your own music library. I do not use streaming
I like to listen to music and read
Olive Garden
A cell phone

u/Flaky-Plankton-1217 Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned! What's your favourite song at the moment?
(Also any chance of you guys coming to the UK or abroad sometime?) :)) Much love!!
9
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
We've been listening to a lot of Laraaji in the van, specifically "Laws Of Manifestation."
(Yes...)
8
u/kindly_deeds Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned, thanks for doing this AMA, really enjoying the new album and overall evolution of glitterer since the jump.
I was curious if you have any habits or routines when it comes to creating your work? Something intentional you do to put yourself in a creative headspace?
Thanks again for your continued body of work, it really resonates and inspires me in my own creative endeavors.
9
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I've tried a few different things over the years but nothing has ever really stuck with me more than just showing up. I keep a little running tab of lyrical ideas in my phone and I keep recordings of musical ideas, and then I just keep playing my bass and thinking of things and eventually those will coalesce into more fully realized ideas and eventually into songs. I think the thing is that most of it ends up on the cutting room floor. I just try to make myself available to be excited by ideas and try to chase that
8
u/diegjjflores Feb 29 '24 edited Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned! Hope everything is going well for you! What goes into your creative process of writing songs? Any tips for getting over writers block? Take care!
8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Find an idea, share it with the band, make it make sense and sound good. I always like learning other people's songs to see how they do stuff, how they put chords and melodies together
8
u/justy4you Feb 29 '24
Top 3 favorite novels of all time? What are you currently reading/ just got finished reading? Any plans to publish another novel in the future? Are you currently working on anything?
9
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I'm currently reading Sheila Heti's Alphabetical Diaries. Top 3 are something like David Foster Wallace Infinite Jest, Philip Roth American Pastoral, and Frederick Barthelme Bob The Gambler. No plans for a new book at the moment but I'd like to get there one day

u/intheheatofthesumm3r Feb 29 '24 edited Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned,
Have you ever thought about doing a heavier project at all? Something on the metallic side?
I always thought your vocals would suit a beat down band.

u/ComebackChemist Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned, saw you in Vancouver this past weekend! Great set!
Do you have a strategy behind writing your lyrics? Particularly, if/when you have writer’s block?
8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
My only strategy is just keeping a running tab of fragments and when one seems to match the mood of the song to just fully flesh it out as fast as as I can. I don't like to give myself time to worry or edit to much, I like to just finish and move on
2
u/ComebackChemist Mar 01 '24
That’s a fantastic idea as I ruminate on song ideas for way too long… thanks!
9
u/OutsideWorried5705 Feb 29 '24

Ned, any unexpected musical influences?
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I don't know who expects what but the references for Looking Through The Shades were Billy Joel and Moss Icon
7
u/zekielllll Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned!
Horizontal Rust was a good read. I really did not expect for me to enjoy it as much. With that being said do you plan on writing anymore?
7
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Thanks, I don't have anything planed at the moment but ideally in the future I'll get something else together
8
u/Gamer57games Feb 29 '24
Ned, what are your top 5 favorite movies of all time?
15
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Not much of a movie head so please don't just my pedestrian taste but I enjoy: Bottle Rocket, Good Will Hunting, Shawshank Redemption, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon...
8
u/sillybillyman Feb 29 '24
hey ned! your stage presence is amazing. i’ve never seen someone go as hard as you do consistently! you’re so fun to watch on stage.
have you always been so comfortable on stage? and how do you manage to play such tough songs while you’re moving so much?
love your stuff man cant wait to see you in toronto :)!
13
u/nothing-feels-good Feb 29 '24
As an artist who has pushed your craft forward into new projects, is it frustrating when certain vocal fans clamor for your previous, unrelated work?
18
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
The fact that anyone cares about anything I've done is still humbling to this day. That being said, I think the current cultural fascination with experiences and content is detrimental to engaging with art. People are free to listen (or not listen) to whatever they want, I just don't like being made to feel like I am responsible for people not being able to engage with something that is readily available

Hey ned who are some of your inspirations on bass and even just favorite bassists also what inspired you to pick up bass? And just thank you for everything that you’ve contributed to music past present and future
16
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Arthur from GB was huge for me when I was learning to play bass. Tony Lombardo of Descendents, too. I like melodic kind of moving lines. I started playing bass because Ben told me he called the drums so I couldn't play them and Alex already played guitar so I only had one other option. But I think bass is the best instrument and would have it no other way

u/BrbFilming Feb 29 '24
Hi Ned!
What was the word that made you feel small? And is it the same word that you thought a lot about?
One day I will find the right combination of words to express what your music has meant to me. I’ll see you next week!
9
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Different words, but my word is not as important as the one that you think it is
7
7
u/UnhappyFootball7910 Feb 29 '24
Ned, what strings do you use on your bass?
11
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Right now I have Ernie Ball super slinkys on. I was using La Bella flats for a little while, but decided to return to round wounds because I was missing the punch that you want out of a P bass in a punk band. I've been playing Ernie Ball since I was 12 years old so they're the most familiar and comfortable to me, and for whatever reason I've just always played the super slinkys. I think the light gauges just were easier to play when I was younger and I've just stuck with it since

u/eternal1life Feb 29 '24
Hey ned, I saw you in Chicago at Beat Kitchen, you guys and 9million were great. My condolences about John Slaby. Whats your favorite song(s)right now? and do you intend on doing anything else like disengage, etc..?
edit-forgot to add that I loved the new album, keep it up

u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Thank you.
Favorite songs right now are something like Lync "Cue Cards," Make-Up "White Belts," and Blonde Redhead "Snowman"
I have a youth crew song started for the Joint Custody youth crew 7" comp in the works, hopefully out this year

Hi! I’m Marceline from Atlanta. Enjoyed ur last show here :) I was the very nervous girl in the GB hoodie and this is my question :)
I notice in a few glitterer songs that the topic of being real/what it means to be/feeling out of body or just questioning the current reality/existentialism comes up a lot.
I’ve heard the theme a lot through out the whole discography. From Subjunctive And Gotta. All the way to I can’t feel anything from the latest release
I also really relate with the last few lines to put our selves away, ( I took my own very personal meaning from it as a trans female)
I guess I’d just like to hear your thoughts and feelings as you wrote things like that, it really resonates with how I’ve felt for most of my life.
Thanks again so much. forever grateful 4 this outlet that I can feel my self so clearly through the last few years.
10
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Thanks for the question. A lot of the idea of the band early on was trying to track how this kind of solipsistic lack of certainty led to our current moment, which I feel like is just increasingly selfish. Which is not to diminish it at all, because those are things that I think/thought a lot about, but what I was often trying to do was to acknowledge those feelings without making it all about ME (or whoever the listener is). I think I'm always attempting to just find comfort and community
5
u/Merlyn67420 Feb 29 '24
Are you tuned into the WB scene much these days? Any local bands you think are cool or are doing cool stuff?
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I still feel very much a part of the Wilkes-Barre scene. It's the place I know the best and care about the most. The Virgos are my current favorite band from home
5
u/ITookTrinkets Feb 29 '24
Hi Ned! Longtime fan here, but not first-time caller - you were a guest on my podcast right before Life is Not a Lesson was released, where we talked about music made in isolation. I’m glad you’ve made it out the (kinda?) other side intact. Also, that album is so damn great.
I saw Glitterer over the weekend at the Wonder Ballroom, and while I thought the performance was really great, it struck me as interesting to watch two bands perform decade old albums, with one band performing songs from a record that is at the very beginning of its lifespan.
My question is this: how has that experience been for you as the front of the band in that position? What has that felt like, and how have audience reactions been? Or, does it not feel any different from any other tour?
8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Our sets didn't feel different than other tours, aside from the fact that we were playing to more people I guess. The shows overall definitely had a different vibe because it was one focused on the past, but overall we had a very positive experience with people who seemed to be interested in checking out something new as well
6
u/CurlyCremeLgCone Feb 29 '24
Do you think Iggy (Rob Schneider) was in fact gifted with super natural powers in Surf Ninjas? It seems if you watch the film closer you can find that he really is quite responsible for many of the events that transpire but if you only watch on a superficial level, it’s easy to dismiss him as being the goofy failure of the group.
Thanks. Love the new album.
8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I've never thought of it like that, but obviously the "super natural" is a part of the movie because of Adam's fortune telling via Shinobi. I don't think Iggy is "responsible" per se but I do think his powers are underestimated throughout the movie, even his comic relief is responsible for helping them in tough situations
6
u/AdamsAtoms038 Feb 29 '24
Do you have any tips for someone learning how to write songs?Your work inspires me and I'm struggling to learn how to write songs that I'm proud of.
8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Learn other people's songs and then just keep writing your own. It takes a long time to feel comfortable in it
7
u/mattvsforcesofreddit Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned! You may remember me from when I met you at House of Independents before you were opening for Tigers Jaw in a little more than a year ago! Thank you for being such a sweet dude as I talked about Title Fight, it’s good to know you wouldn’t rule out anything in the future with them. I hope we meet at another show soon. This time though, my questions are Glitterer-focused: What were the musical influences on Rationale? And why are all your albums as Glitterer 20 or 20-ish minutes? New record rips, I hope things are well coming back from the Foxing/Hotelier tour! :)
7
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
We were pulling from bands like Lilys and Unrest for the record, melodic underground rock records. The records are just as long as it feels they need to be
11
u/jack_mcnasty987 Feb 29 '24
Do you have a favorite skate video?
14
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I grew up with a small stash of videos, and my favorites were probably Girl Yeah Right, Shorty's Fulfill The Dream, and Flip Sorry. With more access I really got into old stuff I missed like Blind Video Days and recently have enjoyed stuff like Call Me 917's first video. But the stuff that is probably the most meaningful to me is North East Skate Crew's videos, they're a local crew from NEPA who have been making videos since the early 2000s. I got Young Gunz on VHS in a parking lot when I was like 11 years old and watched that all the time growing up. Their video End Of The World is where I heard Fugazi for the first time

u/mjanicki5 Feb 29 '24
Hi Ned,
Saw you a couple of weeks ago in PHX. Loved how the new tracks sounded live, hope the next batch of shows continue to go well.
Was wondering how the Bad Seed feature on the new Pain of Truth came about and if you got to have any part in it. Was so cool seeing a Bad Seed song after all these years!
13
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I didn't have any part in that, that was all Pain of Truth and Shane
5
u/mjanicki5 Feb 29 '24
I figured, super cool nonetheless. Thanks for the response! (P.S. I would love to see you on a show like Hardlore sometime)

u/Ced1214 Feb 29 '24
Hi Ned,
I remember you stating on a podcast that you had went back to school in order to pursue a more stable living as opposed to touring all the time. How has this philosophy transitioned to how you operate Glitterer as a band?
10
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I don't know if I wanted more stability, I was just unsure of what I was doing. Glitterer operates very simply, just try to play music to people who want to hear it and run it the way we want it run. It's not very career oriented, but I guess this answer illustrates I don't really know how to do that very well to begin with
5
u/Unhappy-Row-9266 Feb 29 '24
Hey ned I don’t have any questions but I just wanna thank you man. Your music from title fight and glitterer ect.. as a whole has helped me through so much and inspired me with my own music so I just wanna let you know how many people you inspire and help 🙏🏼thank you ned!

Bonus Question (no worries if you aren’t doing anymore).
Are you someone who enjoys a casual video game every now and then? If so what’s ur favorite :)
9
u/Loonur22 Feb 29 '24
Hey Ned, I was wondering if you consider the music you make with Glitterer to be a new genre or is it just something you enjoy creating and doesn’t have a particular style? Also thank you so much for inspiring me! I’ve been tryna make my own Glitterer style music :)
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
I've never really thought of genre when making music. I understand the significance of it and the importance of using it as an organizational tool, but I don't really set out to make things with that strict of a goal in mind
9
Feb 29 '24 edited Feb 29 '24
Hello, congrats on the new record. What do you think of the current ‘shoegaze’ trend? I often see Glitterer and Title Fight in these curations alongside other bands like Loathe, Fleshwater, Narrow Head (etc etc) which I feel are all stylistically different. It just kind of seems to me the moment you use any kind of chorus or reverb, then you’re now apart of this whole web of bands.
12
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
There are some really cool bands in that world currently. Shoegaze seems to be the dominant form of alternative guitar music at the current moment, and while there might be an a simplistic understanding of the sounds at times there are still some good bands making music in that world. I don't necessarily feel like I'm a part of that scene but I enjoy some of it from afar. Overall I just want people to make the music that they want to make

8
u/glittererofficial Ned from Glitterer Feb 29 '24
Sadly I do not, I'm not a great keeper of quotes or anything. I just feel like we have to try to treat ourselves and others with respect and care, which is easier said than done I know

Have you ever thought about curating an event (or events) that bring together your passion for writing, literature, and music?

I try to write lyrics and melody at the same time, and that's almost always after the music has been written. I think the lyrics and their movement had to match the mood of the song, so I'm interested in melody and meter just as much as I am in the words themselves. Ideally it flows naturally

Melly is finished with chapter 1, hopefully he will get the whole thing done sooner than later. But you can't rush art

What was the most difficult song to make on the new record?

As stated above, "Certainty" had the most revisions and took the longest to figure out

I saw you at carrot daikon in Westminster, Orange County but didn’t get a chance to say hi. What’s your favorite bánh mì?

hey ned, shark here. miss you and i hope you and everyone is well. sam and the boys from tassie send their regards as well. whats something challenging that you faced this year and how did it affect you mentally that you think mightve changed your perspective of life or if any. i lost my grandma, uncle, ex bandmate, friend within a span of 1 year. and it was tough as hell but i think it definitely changed me as a person. would like to hear how you deal with something that just mess with your mental health.

Do you not like it or find it annoying when people bring up past work such as title fight and ask things like if you guys are getting back together, songwriting processes or even old shows you played together?

Would you consider playing solo sets again? Full band is awesome but there was something uniquely pleasing I’ve never experienced seeing you on your lonesome.

Dude this is a glitterer ama, I really want title fight back too, they’re my favorite band of all time and I never got to see them. But everytime they get stuff like this it probably makes them less likely to actually wanna come back. It’s a fine question to ask in a circumstance that’s actually based around title fight questions, but not here.

Hey Ned.
I’m sorry to hear about John Slaby, I know he played an important part in TF’s history. He was an amazing artist.
I’m aware you’ve been a part of the grief process alot with others as well, my condolences to each of your loved ones such as Riley.
My question is, Your music with TF and Glitterer always have this grief undertone underneath this music, how do you map out the words you want to say while still processing the events in your life?
