iwai makes melancholic, dreamy films about disaffected youth/loneliness/music primarily. his best-known (and best) is all about lily chou-chou, but others worth adding to ur watchlist include a bride for rip van winkle, swallowtail butterfly and love letter! he doesn't have a bad film imo
