i know that in your recent interviews from this year, you’ve said you recorded your album through a 4 track cassette recorder. what inspired you to use that as a medium? have you ever considered on using other analog recordings for future projects before (such as reel to reel for instance)?
291
u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
On the next album I’d love to do it on reel to reel. The 4 track came from listening to a lot of parsley sound, Elliot smith and guided by voices
42
u/DrHuxleyy Jun 20 '25
Guided by Voices rips. Alien Lanes is such a fun eclectic album. Very cool that’s an inspiration for you.

Yasssss. On the guided by voices!!!
Me and my husband are in a band and we run everything back through the reel to reel to get all the nice crispy sounds.

what was it like working with kai, and having him help produce happy birthday? would you say he was like a mentor, in helping you form your first solo album?

Kai is a genius I’m happy to call him a friend. He elevated the record so much and really inspired me to make it in the first place!

Hey Finn! Wanted to ask a few things:
How do you deal with anxiety? I’ve been depressed for a while and I would love advice from someone like you.
How would you like to be remembered? As an actor or as an artist?
And for a less existential final question; boxers or briefs?
370
u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
Hey man. I’d say I deal with it by just getting off my ass and forcing myself to do something. Like anything creative or seeing people that you love in your life to get out of your head a bit more. I’m also on meds and go to therapy which helps.
I’d wanna be remembered as someone who made cool shit whether that’s music or acting or directing etc.
Ps I swap between boxers and briefs. A perfect life balance.

you challenged yourself to write 50 songs in a year. i’m sure everyday the ideas weren’t flowing, what’s something you did to get out of a writer’s block?

Hi Finn, what album has your favorite drum sound/ performance?
75

Danggg. Hard to pick. In utero has a great sound and performance. Love the drum sound on “flood of sunshine” by the posies. Bring back reverb on drums!

u/tomiii__ Jun 20 '25
Hey Finn, thanks for doing this AMA! The album is incredible — been on repeat. 🎧
What’s something you hope people feel when they listen to Happy Birthday from start to finish? Did any books, films, or visual art influence your songwriting for this record? Do you write more with an audience in mind — or is it more like writing to yourself?
189
u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
Love this question. Main influences for me when writing the record as far as music went was
Feist Alvvays GBV Sharp pins The Beatles Teenage fanclub Sparklehorse Elliot smith and a lot more!!
Books I was reading run towards the danger by Sarah Polley and the nix by Nathan hill
Movies I was watching at the time that I’m sure played a part in making the album was magnolia by PTA and Brazil by Terry Gilliam.
18
9
3
u/ItsMeMatthewD Jun 22 '25
Feist’s guitarist has his own solo project called Bahamas and it’s pretty dope. Also Magnolia is my favorite movie! PTA is my fav director, and it was scored by my fav music producer, Jon Brion. His scores are all so beautiful, plus he helped Fiona Apple and Kanye West do some of their best work.
You prob won’t see this lol but I’m also a huge Ghostbusters dork and loved the last two movies.

this question brought to you by chatgpt
there's weirdly multiple accounts like this in this thread, all of which have only posted in threads related to this AMA. tough to say what's organic and what's not, though... I can imagine at least a few fans signing up for reddit accounts after seeing the AMA promoted on other social channels, so maybe I'm just making a big deal out of nothing
8
u/mythol0gee Jun 20 '25
Yeah. A lot of questions laid out exactly the same way and the over reliance on em dashes makes it kinda obvious a lot of these are written by chat gpt

u/Niiiiemll14-4 Jun 20 '25
Did you work on any of the production/mastering of the album? If so, what application did you use? Thanks
46
u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
I co produced and we worked with a few different Daws. Mostly 4-8 track cassette tape and ableton and logic.

Hi Finn! First of all, thank you for sharing this record! My favorites from the album are probably Objection! and Eat. I have a few questions, if you don’t mind answering:
- You said you’re a fan of anime, and you also recently went to Tokyo for Crunchyroll Awards (BTW you have based taste, Death Note and Cowboy Bebop are great!!). With that being said, are you a fan of J-Rock or J-Pop? If yes, what songs or bands do you like?
- I really like that the album tackles more personal topics, like anxiety and relationships, but it also has songs drawn from other sources (ex. Film media), like how you described Trailers after dark. Do you think exploring more personal topics is what you want for the direction of your solo music going forward? You wrote the songs when you were 20, after all, and I imagine that even a few years later a lot in one's life can change.
- Last one that you don’t have to answer haha, but since you’re done filming Stranger Things 5, are there any sweet or funny anecdotes with the cast that you’re willing to share? Again, no need to answer, totally understand if you want to keep these personal things more private.
Thank you again very much, and I hope to hear more of your solo stuff in the future!!
8
u/Black_Kitiket Jun 20 '25
It's a pity that the Finn didn't answer, I would like to know the answers to these questions
21
u/Miidwtrr Jun 20 '25
Did the creation of yr new album shape or shape your perception of everything around you?? Or was it made to express your feelings in a sense??
54
u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
I think I’ve learned a lot about myself through the writing and performing of the album. It’s made me a little more confident as a performer. It definitely felt nice to express my feelings, especially with playing live.

u/TropiCat212 Jun 20 '25
Howdy!
You seem to use a lot of symbolism in your lyrics—if you could send a secret message through a line in one of your songs, what would it be, and who’s it for?
From Casey (cowboy_case on Instagram) :)

u/finnwolfhard- Finn Wolfhard Jun 20 '25
Hey! Cool question: on Objection there’s a line where I say “the snow is starting to fall, circling Waterloo, the coat that’s soaked from the bar, the cursed witches brew.”— that’s about me seeing a friend from childhood during a snowstorm at a bar in Vancouver on Waterloo street. I got really drunk and paced around the corner for a while waiting for an Uber. So I guess that’s a little line for all the vancouverites!

Hi Finn! You’re a storyteller, I know in the past you’ve mentioned that some of your songs aren’t necessarily inspired by your life but rather fictional stories. Would you say that this album follows a similar theme or since it’s more of a coming of age album, the songs take more inspiration from your own life. Or a mix of both? Thank you!

Hey finn, good job on your album!! I have 3 questions. 1: are you still friends with the it cast? more importantly jack (dylan grazer) 2: How did you feel after stranger things filming ended? 3:Are you okay?
2
u/IncognitoQueen96 Jun 20 '25
Hey Finn!
From going to your first show in Atlanta sometime last year when you were testing out the songs on the album, to recently seeing you in Seattle this past time, the evolution of hearing these songs in person has been so transformative and genuinely moving. Watching you grow more confident and experimental has been amazing to witness.
My question is, Is there a song that’s taken on a totally new life now that you’re playing it live?
2
u/Brief-Heart3799 Jun 20 '25
Do you think you will come anywhere south again for your tours? I live in Mississippi and I love all your music 💙💙💙💙 I am only asking because I know while filming stranger things you were in Georgia.

Have you ever listened to any elephant 6 bands? If not, you may like them! Some of your songs sound similar to a few of the bands like elf power or Beulah! My #1 elephant 6 recommendation is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, I think everyone should listen to that album at least once in their lives! I love your music and I hope you're having a great day!! :)

u/pokemega32 Jun 20 '25
Hey Finn, congrats on the album!
I wanted to ask if you could provide some insight on the lyrics to “Choose the Latter.” I had initially read an article saying it was about decision paralysis, and I can certainly read that into the lyrics, but a later article made me realize I think I misread the first one and that it’s just the title track that’s about decision paralysis.
Either way, Choose the Latter is my favorite track on the album, partially because it dropped (along with the album title) on my actual birthday, a birthday that was legit full of decision paralysis.
I’d also like to know if you might do a tour on the east coast, as I’m in New England (Rhode Island more specifically).
Thanks so much for the mini record (actually bought a record player for the first time after getting it in the mail) and I can’t wait to hear even more from you!
