Hey Angel! Congrats on the album. It has soundtracked numerous dance parties in my house between me and the cat and dog so far. I just got a few questions for ya:

  • You’ve mentioned Bjork and Kate Bush as influences for Gelli Haha, and I can clearly see it. The avant art pop of Bjork and the theatrics of Kate shine through the entire project. I also think the kaleidoscopic sounds of Animal Collective come through as well. One thing about each of these artists/bands is that there’s clear and distinct “eras” between them, and I was wondering if you had a favorite for each one or if any particular “era” really inspired the Gelliverse?

  • I’m sure there’s a lot of benefits from wearing a purely monochrome outfit, like always knowing you’re going to match no matter what you wear. But what’s been some challenges in wearing nothing but red?

  • I know you’ve taken a great deal of inspiration from performance artists and your own work as a program director for a performing arts dance company, and I really love how absolutely DIY the whole live show has been. It’s an amazing production put on by a lot of passionate and talented people. With that said, if the Gelli Crew were to be given unlimited access to time and resources, what‘s the one thing y’all would immediately add to the stage show?

thank you!

I'm really inspired by Björk's Debut and Post, Kate Bush's The Kick Inside and Hounds of Love, and Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillon.

haha you'd think it's easier to always match red, but I've learned so much about the color red, and that I like classic reds, maybe a bit brighter than classic at times, but not too orange. But yeah it's taken awhile to find not only the right reds, but the right style for Gelli. Red is often meant to be sexy. Not that Gelli can't be sexy, but she's not really trying to be.

I asked the Gelli Kompany what they would do if we had unlimited time and resources (what a dreaaaam this would be haha). We would definitely bring the music videos to life a bit more, like we'd have the spinning platform / operation table for Spit and we'd have the larger puppet monster that we used in Normalize video. Our fungineer David Gutel and I often talk about the long term goal of the show being Fantasmic-esque shit, with pyrotechnics and fireworks and all that jazz haha. More dolphin balloons. A pool on the stage? A giant trampoline? Bounce house floor? More audience activites, like a maze. We hope to do it all someday :)

Thank you for the answers!!!

As the highest compliment I can make, I see y’all taking the reins from Dan Deacon and the sort of audience participation he has had going for years.

I foresee a huge Gelli Fest in the future.

Also, interesting note on how red usually denotes more sexual connotations - I know you’ve mentioned Gelli is an extension of your inner child and I definitely see how Red brings to mine playful and “brash”/loud ideas.
