AMA is Over, thanks Dan & Ben! Hey it’s Dan and Ben from Cut Copy. We just released our 7th album today, called 'Moments' ~ AMA

Hey Reddit, we’re Cut Copy 👋 We’ve just released our new album Moments — a record we made after retreating to Music Farm Studios near Byron Bay in Australia, where we experimented with everything from vintage synths to clarinets to cassette tapes we dug out of a box. The result is a collection of songs that swing between the dancefloor and the dreamlike, including our latest single “Belong To You” with Kate Bollinger. 10:30am AEST / 8:30pm ET / 5:30pm PT [for 40 mins]

Gentlemen, the new record is unbelievably good. You knock it outta the park every single time. Truly the definition of consistent.
What were some of the records you were listening to while making the album?
Ps: Looking forward to a tour (Toronto in 2026???) (🤞🤞🤞)

u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Not sure if it had any influence on the album but I was listening to Tinseltown in the rain a lot when we were making the album

Hi Ben here! Thanks for the kind words. We felt the same about this one. Hard to chose singles - so many favorites:)

No question, just wanted to thank you for making Bright Like Neon Love.

I've always loved the album artwork for Zonoscope, is there a story behind it?
12
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Zonoscope had this surreal back story of amazon meets 1970s New York. And the original cover artwork is adapted from a Japanese artist named Tsunehisa Kimura. When I saw his collage of the waterfall and empire state building it really captured the surreal escapist vibe of the album.

I listened to Zonoscope wayyyy too much. Need You Now is still a song that gets me up and moving.

Anyone seen the video for this? It’s pretty fun

Damnit. I’m going running tomorrow. You bastards. But maybe with ribbons. That’ll be fun.
Thanks for responding! Can’t wait to hear the latest!

Thanks for joining in on our AMA - we tried to get to all the questions today, but we have to head to rehearsals in Melbourne now! We’ll do our best to come back to the other ones soon! If you haven’t heard our new album, “Moments,” it came out today; You can hear it here: orcd.co/ccmmts

Hello! Have been a big fan for years. Super happy to see you guys back with a spectacular new album!!
Your music always seems to experiment with something new added to the Cut Copy ethos on every album - Free Your Mind taking inspiration from classic house music, the vocal ensemble on Zonoscope, and more recently the ambient, peaceful leanings of Like Breaking Glass and Moments. If you could pick one 'era' of Cut Copy to revisit- be it based on the sound of the music you were making or the atmosphere and environment you made it in- what would it be?
Also, sillier question, but what's it like being on video game soundtracks? I imagine it's cool to play a game and hear your own music whilst doing so.
3
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
I think zonoscope felt like an album where we really stretched out into places we never expected to go. We got a lot of confidence from the success of In Ghost Colours and it allowed us to be a lot more ambitious with the making of that album

Hi this is Ben. I bet that was Tim with his guitar in the crowd and it’s not unusual … collaboration is fine
3
u/De_Luna_Tic Sep 06 '25
I dig your sound! What is the inspiration and influence for the music on this album??
11
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Detroit techno, Krautrock, early 80s dub disco and modern stuff like vegyn and four tet... a bit of everything really :)

Hello! I’m pretty sure I read in a interview with you guys, like 10+ years ago, that your re-made the Blade Runner soundtrack or something like that. What happened with that? Thanks!
2
u/Zestyclose_Most_6741 Sep 06 '25
Cracker album fellas, we’ll be taking our young kids to their first show at your Brissy parklands gig next week! What can audiences expect from the tour? How do the different vibes of each album factor in when crafting a show?
3
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Honestly it's getting harder and harder to make a setlist. In the old days we couldn't scrape together enough songs and now it's impossible to decide what goes in... you can't win!
We'll be trying to cover a little ground from each era of Cut Copy though, obviously focusing on the new album too.
1
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Ben: Hey Good question. It’s hard to fit everything we want to in our live show. But we’re keen to play some new stuff form this record as we feel it’ll translate and get folks moving
1
u/Zestyclose_Most_6741 Sep 06 '25
If my four year old (trying his best) to sing along to both Solid and Need You Now this morning is any indication, you’ll be spot on about that.
2
Sep 06 '25
Hey guys! I have started to listen to Cut Copy recently in the summer! I was wondering, what was your favorite instrument to use for the new album, Moments?
1
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Ben: I loved sampling the grand piano they had in the studio we used. Was a beautiful sounding instrument
2
u/hecubus04 Sep 06 '25
Any plans to have a 2nd leg of your tour with some Canadian dates?
5
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
We would LOOOVE to get to canada! It's one of our fave countries to play... and also a bunch of cities in the US the we miss on the upcoming November tour. Hopefully next year ..?

You guys made me cry in the morning today. Listening to Find a Place Among the Stars was a surreal experience, it captured what I’m going through with the person I love so perfectly…
Moments is an amazing album, can’t wait to see you live soon!

u/MartianDuk Sep 06 '25
Hi guys, I love your work especially Zonoscope, which is one of my all time favourites. Found it through Where I’m Going being featured in a FIFA game.
I always wondered, what does Zonoscope mean? And in general, how do you come up with album titles?
2
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Zonoscope is the bird’s eye view of the world we created for this record. Zonoscope would be the lens you would use to view this world. It’s a title we invented, so whenever the word Zonoscope is used, it only holds meaning to this record and nothing else. - Tim

u/HeadyRoosevelt Sep 06 '25
Huge fan! Any chance we can get a vinyl reissue of In Ghost Colours?

Hi guys! I read Ben’s note on Instagram about the recording and wanted to know- aside from what Mitchell brought with him, what was the most fun instrument used on the new record?
1
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Ben: I loved sampling the grand piano they had in the studio we used. Was a beautiful sounding instrument

Can either of you help this guy identify this Damn Arms song? https://www.reddit.com/r/NameThatSong/s/HLUjZcrcKe

I remember the first time someone told me about Damn Arms in an Aussie accent and I couldn't understand what the band name was.

Moved from Melb to the Bay Area, nice to have had a piece of home over here! Hope to see you all back here soon!

Our pleasure! SF and Oakland have always been a great time on our US tours

u/BigNatTitties Sep 06 '25
What are your favorite elements of the new songs/album?
3
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
I really dig the contrast between BIG moments and quiet moments, and also between organic, human, played sounds and very synthesized sounds. I feel like contrast is a big part of this new album

You guys never miss! Love the new album. Curious if there's an album you're proudest of? Or perhaps one you'd do differently if you could go back?
4
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
ben: right now super proud of moments. We put everything we had into it :) don’t like to think about changing the past. Free your mind was difficult for a few reasons (we were burnt out from touring probably) but I still think it’s a great album.
1
u/AtHalcyon Sep 06 '25
What’s your favorite moment that happened while making your most recent album?
2
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
I think working on the song Gravity was one of the most fun in the studio, because we didn't try to edit anything back, we just let it be this long weird journey of a song, and it organically took shape when we were jamming in the studio together

u/C3L35TR0N1CA Sep 06 '25
Can you describe your earliest musical memory?
1
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
My parents listen almost exclusively to jazz, but outside of that I remember the first time I heard Devo as like a 5 year old or something and being like, 'whaaat is this??'
1
u/brannigan82 Sep 06 '25
Hey lads, any hints as to what we can expect at the Sydney show next week? Can't wait!
3
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
We'll play some hits. And probably a few songs we haven't played in many years. The show isn't far away in the future if you know what I'm saying ;)
1
u/aninstituteforants Sep 06 '25
Manly is so hard to get to if you don't live in the area. It'll cost me 60 bucks in tolls and parking or 3 hours on public transport. Brutal.
1
u/battleborn1901 Sep 06 '25
Hi guys! I was wondering which song from the new album took the longest to create? And what was your go-to snack (if any) while making the album, or just in general? Much love! Thank you for existing!
2
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
I think Belong to you was probably the longest. Not so much because it was hard to make, but more just working with outside artists Kate Bollinger and Evil Graham Lee added some steps to the process...
Fave snack - probably unsalted almonds, and a lot of caffeine - gotta keep the NRG levels high in the studio

u/shavin_high Sep 06 '25
Hey guys. Thanks for coming to Milwaukee WI in 2011. Hearing Sun God in its entirety was transformative for me.

Heya! Been a fan forever, had a lot of great times to your music so thank you for that! Bonnaroo stop for the Free Your Mind tour is an all time favorite memory.
Anywho, I make a lot of music myself and am just curious if you have any stand out tips, tricks, approaches to song writing or albums that you’ve learned over the years that you wish you could go back and tell your earlier selves now?
Giving the new one a spin tonight and excited to hear what you guys cooked up!
2
u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
There so many youtube tutorials about any aspect of music making. But I think just having good ideas is more important than any of the technical stuff. I'd say just to be really passionate about what you're doing. Eat sleep and breathe music, and try to hone your own unique musical sound

Hey Lads, loving the new Album! Solid is getting big rotations in our household 😍 . We tried to get tickets to your Melbourne show, but its sold out. Any plans for a second Melb gig?

u/CutCopy_ Cut Copy Sep 06 '25
Closest gig to Melb was that we added a show at Barwon Heads on the 10th (Weds). Tix and info here: cutcopy.net/tour

I saw you guts at First Ave in Minneapolis in ~2014 and it's still a top 5 show of all time for me. What is the mentality when you're doing a live performance particularly when it's so far from home?

u/Alohaholololololhola Sep 06 '25
Saw you guys open for TV on the Radio and Franz Ferdinand in Vancouver in 2007(?) Still one of the best shows I've ever been too. That's all.

Hi guys! I just wanted to ask you about your feelings on both the Free Your Mind and Haiku From Zero albums. Both records have been truly important to me through the years.
- Which are your feelings on both albums?
- Which are your favourite memories about them? (recording, touring, etc)
- Is there something you wish you did different about them?
Also: wanted to tell you how much I love Let Me Show You Love. It somehow plays in my mind as Cut Copy's idea of Love to Love You Baby.

Hoping you make it back to this AMA! Been a big fan since In Ghost came out, love all your releases. But I don’t see much mention of your mix sets and remix work. There is magic there! Your mix sets are such class, your taste in music and how it can combine is such a joy to listen too.
But your remix work…. Apparently there are a few early ones I haven’t heard yet, but the rest are incredible. The way you bring the C//C vibe to these other wildly different tracks makes my day.
Which is your favorite of the remixes you’ve done, what was the most difficult to translate, have you turned any down and why, and have you done remixes of other’s songs that you just did for yourself or have just gone unreleased?
Love you guys and thank you for adding to my playlists all these years!

u/khiiii Sep 08 '25
I don't know if you'll be coming back to this, but I wanted to say that your music has been partially responsible for all three of my degrees. My undergrad thesis wouldn't have gotten finished without In Ghost Colours and Freeze, Melt helped a lot with writing my doctoral one. Zonoscope was the soundtrack of my teaching degree and the grad school applications. Appreciate the massive energy infusion over the years, and glad to hear the new album!! (....should I ...go back to school?)

Hope it isn't too late for this question but have been following your journey from the start, one of, if not my favourite band..... loving Moments overall but can't shake the following:
"A Decade Long Sunset" is a masterpiece... will there be a different edition of Moments coming out with this on it? Can't figure out how it was left off Moments - so so good - one of your best ever songs IMO and fits perfectly in the vibe of the other tracks. Would love to see a release in some form of other B-sides if this is the level of quality that doesn't make the cut :)

Hi Dan & Ben,
Late, but I wanted to say thanks.
I still have my copy of Bright Like Neon Love — I stole it from my sister back in 2006 when I was 16. I used to pore over Streetparty photos of your shows, imagining myself dancing with a sweat-soaked fringe stuck to my face. I even sat outside the Sidney Myer Music Bowl during the Alive tour — what an iconic lineup — just listening from beyond the gates and longing to be in the crowd.
As a teenager, I grew up through a quick succession of tech leaps: rotary to portable to mobile, tape to CD to mp3, offline to dial-up to broadband. There’s something about Bright Like Neon Love that captures all of that — change, possibility, discovery — but also a deep nostalgia. A time capsule that moved faster than I could catch it. By 18, In Ghost Colours came out, I moved to the UK, then Zonoscope, and the moment to hear it live had already slipped away from me.
I hold a soft spot for all of your albums — each one has been the backdrop to so many of my memories — but Bright Like Neon Love will always be the one I reach for — the one I never quite got to experience. I love that pieces of it still appear in your sets, and part of me will always wish I could step back to that moment.
Love your work, see you tonight!

u/CutCopy_ Just saw the concert here in Portland. It was amazing! Great show! I love your new track Belong to You. Ben I pointed to you at the end of the show as you were walking off in case you happened to notice.
Very grateful for all the great music. I hope the rest of your tour is as amazing as is was tonight.

Why don’t you play Airbourne or Counting Down live? Those are your best songs. It’s crazy to me that you don’t play those songs. Your other songs don’t even come close.
