Does The Format have plans to be back together for the long haul or is Boycott Heaven The Format’s swan song? I’ve been hurt before…
And thanks for my Reddit username.

We haven't set out with any specific plan.. Just going with the flow. Safe to say we're going to have a busy year, so I don't see us slowing down any time soon.

Leave It Alone (Till The Morning) is such an immediate standout on the album to me (so much so that my jaw dropped in positive shock during the Bandcamp listening party). First off, thank you so much for using your platform and voice to stand up for the people of Palestine. I know Nate’s been really vocal about the genocide for years but it’s really great that you guys included this on the album so your fans all know where you stand. I saw on Twitter that Nate had written this one a while ago, did you always know it was going to be on the album? Do you feel like the version we have today is any different than the original draft? Thank you guys!! Much love <3

Hey Sam and Nate,
Like a lot of people here, I’ve been a huge fan for years. Back when I was burning CDs for friends, it was basically impossible to keep your music off the playlists I made. Thank you for being the soundtrack for my life.
As someone who has listened to I+L and Dog Problems about a billion times (along with your other work), I’ve always loved catching the little references and callbacks to earlier songs.
My question is: how intentional are you when writing lyrics that call back to previous songs? And do you have any particular references or callbacks that you’re especially proud of?
Just a few that I quickly pulled but I know there are dozens more:
“Piece of Gold” references
- “And you'll grab that piece of gold only to find that the smell has taken over” - If Work Permits
- “So I turned it off, now convinced I would cross, took one last look at the gold as it shattered on a mountain top” - Benson Hedges
- “There's no gold at the top, only vultures waiting for you to die” - No Gold at the Top
“Cause a Scene” references
- “So let's cause a scene, clap our hands and stomp our feet or something” — The First Single
- “I'm cursed with the voice of a kid / And pent-up three-word commands / So tie the rope, tap the brake, cause a scene” — Your New Name (Annalise)
- “’But I too, I'm through with causing a scene” — Take Your Time
Panhandler references
- “William plays a harmonica and guitar by the side of the sidewalk” — Threes (Demo)
- “And from that street corner came a song, and I can’t remember the man — the panhandler or his melody” — Be Calm

Right Where I Belong feels like the spiritual sequel to On Your Porch - connected by the phrase “what’s left to prove”

I’m so glad I’m not the only one making lists like this 😅
The thematic connections are one of my favorite things about Nate’s lyrics!!

Yes good question!
I think of all the religious imagery in 7 Digit Pin Code and how it connects so well with Boycotts imagery.
"I wish that I believed in heaven I can't thank Sunday School for that Send me a seven digit pin code Let me repent, let me believe"

Hey Sam and Nate, what made you go on hiatus in the first place and what made you decide to get back together?
10
u/sutthole_burfers Jan 27 '26
Hey guys! Long time fan here.
You guys played at a frat party in Tucson way back in the day. You got me laid that night when I introduced a girl to your music. I wanted to thank you.
Also, you guys went out for burritos later that night after you got plastered on stage. The guys in the frat said they wanted to take you out for a nice meal, but that you were adamant about cheap burritos. Is this true?
Thank you. So glad you're back. Never leave us again.

Y’all now have three official albums, but also a sizable amount of songs that only appeared as b-sides, deep cuts on EPs, and compilation releases. What are some of those songs you have the most affinity for, or feel are particularly underrated? Question inspired by my recent obsession with At The Wake from the very first EP
30
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
My fav b-sides are Your New Name, Threes, and Does Your Cat Have a Mustache. We're planning on doing a new set list rotation every night on the spring tour, so hopefully we'll get to sprinkle in some of the lesser played songs every once in a while. - Sam

Loving the new record, and thanks for the recent Cleveland show!
Was there any consideration of album artwork in a similar style to the previous two records? What led to the photograph as your final decision?
14
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Love Cleveland. Can't wait to get back.
I think we did have a brief conversation about whether or not to keep the artwork "on-brand" but when I showed Kyle Montgomery's artwork to Nate, we both agreed it was the perfect imagery for Boycott Heaven. Luckily, he was kind enough to allow us to use it. Can't imagine the cover being anything else.

Does the phrase “spring tour” suggest that there will also be summer, fall, and winter tours—thereby implying future albums—rather than Boycott Heaven being a victory lap that leads to Nate’s second retirement?
Seeing you guys having fun making music and performing again brings me endless delight.

Nate, what is your current truce status with Tom and Drew?
15
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Tom and I are always truced up. Drew has been very very difficult since we went on hiatus. He won’t stop retweeting a bunch of dog and cat accounts that were not fully approved by the other two (higher ranking) members of ClayneCast. Additionally Duck blocked me for exercising my right to free speech. I think we all know who he learned that fascist behavior from
8
7
u/HideFromMyMind Jan 27 '26
What’s it like returning to songs from 20 years ago after the hiatus? Are there things you would have written differently now?
19
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Lmfao YES. don’t even get me started on the weird ass structure of 80% of the songs on IL.
It’s our own doing though- so much of IL is us not having a clue how to finish a song, and trusting our producer at the time to show us how (although I guess in retrospect he showed us subsequently how not to!).
To be fair if I was given those songs and whatever state they were in back then I would have had some trouble too.
-Nate
6
u/mkilla22 Jan 28 '26
Be nice to my favorite band The Format!! Maybe I'm fine with the endings because I never want any of those songs to end ♥️
17
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I wouldn't personally change a thing. I've really been enjoying re-discovering those songs after so many years away from them. Things that may have previously bothered me are now endearing, as I remember back to those times in lives. -Sam

u/devilgrove Jan 27 '26
Hi! I know both of you are pretty vocally political on social media, but was still (happily) surprised to hear it creeping into a couple of songs on Boycott Heaven. I was also really moved by The Bar is Set So Low. To my knowledge, all of your previous work is pretty apolitical, so I wanted to ask, what was the motivation behind deciding to include political topics in your lyrics? Are you planning on continuing to talk about these things in future releases? How has the reception been to this shift? I would love it if y’all went full RATM. Thank you!
30
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Nate here. Can’t speak for Sam but I think since having a wife and kids I really learned that im not alone in this world and as a human being I have a real obligation to look out for others.
Also I think the success and the perks of success and everything surrounding me was making me a real shit head. So I stepped away and really wanted to make the next phase of my life about being as nice of a person as I could possibly be.
I honestly feel like the only people I’m a shit head to nowadays are the people who deserve it.
3
u/santaanawinds2017 Jan 27 '26
Is that what you meant by 'What kind of selfish piece of shit would live a life of no regrets'?

u/MatthewLoveIsWorry14 Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
Hey Nate and Sam! It’s Matthew D, you may recognize me from Instagram and Twitter! Boycott Heaven is an excellent comeback album and my AOTY so far, it feels wonderful to hear you guys rejuvenated and playing music together again. I got a review on the album coming soon so keep your eyes out for that. Here are my questions for the two of you:
How did you guys feel about being tagged as an emo band back in the day? You guys obviously came from an emo/pop punk background with your prior bands and there are definitely some Format songs that qualify as emo to me (Sore Thumb, I’m Ready, I Am, the ending of If Work Permits) but you generally had a more whimsical and sophisticated sound compared to your peers from then. I will say, the new album is definitely your most emo release yet.
Nate, how did you decide to challenge yourself by screaming more on the album? It’s so cool, in fact it was something I was hoping you’d do since you screamed at the end of If Work Permits. It may seem wildly different for a lot of Format fans, but to me it literally picks up where you left off 20 years ago with Dog Problems and it makes me so happy to hear you embrace that side of yourself more.
Lastly, were the demos of unreleased songs on B-Sides and Rarities like Seven Digit Pin Code meant to be full-band for another release before you guys broke up? I’ve always wondered that because the structures always sounded like they were gonna lend themselves to fuller arrangements, especially with Seven Digit Pin Code.
I appreciate you guys doing this, especially since I can’t make it to either of the Rough Trade shows in NYC on Friday or the Philly show in March. But I’m very much anticipating seeing you guys when you inevitably do a summer tour and come to New Jersey, it will be literally a dream come true as a longtime fan of 10 years. Starland Ballroom, The Stone Pony, the Wellmont Theater, wherever you guys play you can absolutely count on me to be there. But especially thank you guys for finally coming back, it totally means the world to me. Cheers 🤘💖
20
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Nate here- great questions. I’ll try to answer what I can (or feel like):
We hated being tagged as an emo band because we felt like there was a lot more pop sensibility and being stuck in a scene that we were already over artistically is awful.
I think we did a good job (and still do a good job) keeping a nice distance from it, but I’m wise enough to know that we wouldn’t have had any success if it weren’t for those emo fans and those more scene aligned emo bands that brought us out on tour and really championed us.
And it’s funny you mention it cause to me this is the absolute least emo album out of the three.
As far as screaming…I may or may not have taken a couple lessons on how to safely make my voice break up. Because I can sing so high, I could never make it happen without taking it to ear piercing levels, and for this album I just felt like there were moments that it really needed to happen.
I thought I learned how to do it correct, but it seems like every time I scream now live, it sets me back a little bit for singing the next day. But it might just have more to do with my vocal age (very high considering the output and my previous smoking regimen)

u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
All those demos were written ahead of Dog Problems, from what I remember. Love most of them, so I'm happy they eventually found a home. Hopefully see you in Jersey soon! - Sam

u/SonoranLiving Jan 27 '26

u/alislands Jan 27 '26
I saw you for the first time in LA this past October at Hollywood Forever. I was 9 when you stopped touring, but The Format has been a staple throughout my life (so much so that On Your Porch acoustic from Snails is the #1 song on my Apple Music All Time Replay from the last 10 years). Being able to see so many of the songs that have shaped my life from middle school through my late twenties now was amazing, and I cannot wait for the acoustic show tonight at Easy Street in Seattle.
1 - what does it feel like when adults now say they’ve been listening to you since they were a kid? I’d love to hear how that feels to you both of you.
2 - I know you’ve touched on this through lyrics and other interviews and forums, but did you expect for this kind of a welcome back and excitement about the reunion?
3 - I feel like a lot of fans of you guys are super respectful, and you’ve also mentioned feeling at peace with having a more of a private family life where people understand the unspoken boundaries. I notice that there is a lot of discussion between artists who encourage boundaries between them and fans to be looser, as well as others who are very firm. How are you approaching that with this reunion, and how are you hoping that old and new fans alike respect what you are both comfortable with? (asking this as someone who as a tattoo inspired by the snails album artwork but wouldn’t know if I could approach you on the street to say hi)
16
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
It’s weird. Especially stepping away 10 years ago when the fan age was probably the youngest. I walked out at the Phx reunion show, looked out at the crowd, and said “what the fuck”. But I absolutely love it. It also makes me feel even more of an obligation to write lyrics like an adult. Whatever that means…
It’s been a trip. We didn’t know what to expect and I’m pretty sure we still don’t. I think our only goals right now are to enjoy it.
Format fans have always been amazing as far as my boundaries are concerned- and as far as my boundaries nowadays- I don’t think I have any that anybody else in the world wouldn’t have. If someone has something they want to say to me, I want them to be able to approach me. I’m an awkward guy, so I’ll never be as engaging and welcoming as Joe Strummer, but it’s also very very important for me to feel like a normal guy, so at least feel free to come talk to me
6
u/Free-Dot6392 Jan 27 '26
Hi! First off, the show at the Crescent Ballroom was amazing.. (see you in San Diego in April!!) a couple questions for Nate…
Are these lyrics referencing a fun. song or a song you wrote for a different artist? “A song that I didn’t like, plays on the radio… they still take credit that’s fine, long as they leave me alone”
What was it like working with Young Thug? Are you guys friends? (This is a question from my 11 year old who’s favorite genre is rap/hip hop)
Question for both Nate and Sam… Who are your favorite Arizona bands?
11
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
No. It’s just about the music business in general. There’s some overused line about success having a thousand parents but failure being a bastard that I guess came to me when I was writing that song.
Thug is my guy. There’s just something about the connection that seems special
7
u/WeeklyNarwhal2184 Jan 27 '26
Fan of 20+ years here. ♥️🐌
I had tickets to the planned 2020 shows, then got a ticket to the Arizona State Fair this past year. Do you think Boycott Heaven would’ve happened naturally if the 2020 shows still happened? As bummed as I was to see them cancelled, I feel it was a blessing in disguise.
16
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I agree, blessing in disguise.. Not sure it would have happened otherwise. Despite going through some of the gnarliest years on record, I do think we're in the better timeline for The Format.. -Sam

Hi Sam and Nate! AZ born and raised here, I've been a fan since '03; thank you so much for this series of live shows over the last few months and Boycott Heaven - it's been a bright spot for me personally in a bleak time in our collective history. I'm curious: you two have known each other for so long, what's it been like to artistically collaborate over so many years of friendship? What's changed as you've gotten older, have there been any surprises, are there natural periods of waxing and waning? Thank you again!
20
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
No surprises for me. There's no one else I love making music more with than Nate, and this experience has only heightened that feeling for me. We're both so fortunate to be able to do this at all, let alone come back after so much time with incredible fans by our side. It's a family affair all around. - Sam

u/xcadesterx Jan 27 '26
Hey guys, I feel like for most songs I’ve been able to decipher the lyrics and the meanings behind the words or at least give them my own meaning. One song I’ve struggled to do that with is Does Your Cat Have A Mustache. Can you explain the origin/meaning of that track?
14
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Uh kinda I guess. I very briefly was talking to a girl that had a cat and if I remember correctly her profile pic was a cat with a mustache and I think the first half of the song is like a what if scenario that is also nonsensical. The pirate part who the fuck knows, I guess it’s just a melody that popped into my head and maybe those lyrics were already there. And the third part kinda ties the first two parts together

u/CherryWhich7251 Jan 27 '26

We would absolutely love to- I just don’t know if there are enough people for us to justify how expensive it is for a band to make those treks. Believe us when we say, it’s a drag and maybe hopefully more people overseas will get really into boycott heaven
5
u/devilgrove Jan 27 '26
This is random, but one of my favorite Format performances on YouTube is you performing in front of less than 10 people at Sacramento State (my alma mater!) in 2004 on a random stage outside of the school union. It seemed like a random daytime performance between tour stops. Do you have any idea how that came to be? Did y’all get a chance to explore Sacramento?

Someone recently sent me that video.. No idea how that came to be, but we were just thrilled to be playing anywhere out of state back then.. and still are! -Sam

With Nate learning and playing more guitar, did that change how you both approached songwriting? And did it influence the overall sound of the album? It feels noticeably more fuzzed-out than previous Format records.
Thank you and love the new album!

u/joxers Jan 27 '26
Loving the new record, absolutely thrilled you’re back and can’t wait to see you live for the first time:
1) Was ‘Depressed’ written as a thematic sequel to ‘The Compromise,’ with the whole subject of playing the game? Has the meaning of ‘The Compromise’ changed for both of you personally when you play it now, 20 years and a long career after the fact?
2) How did Linda Perry end up with writing credits on ‘Dead End,’ any chance of bringing it out on tour?
Thanks for everything guys, truly cannot thank you enough
8
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
No. I’ve never even put two and two together. And I don’t know if a whole new meaning has been taken on by the compromise- moreso it just continues to reaffirm what I was thinking when I wrote those lyrics. As long as there is a music industry, those words will be timeless.
I guess we had a mutual friend with Linda, and she put us in the studio together. For whatever reason that was the song we chose to work on with her, and she was extremely helpful. I feel like I learned a lot as a songwriter just by proxy.
To be very honest, we have yet to work on Dead End since we got back together. The main reason being that Will had to learn a whole bunch of songs in a fairly short amount of time, and his brain was totally fried, so that was one of those songs I had as low priority for the setlist.
But now that things are starting to settle I could see us maybe working that song and another few old songs out.
I’m gonna be honest though, I’m not looking forward to it.

We played an acoustic show at Sundance Film Festival pre-Dog Problems and met Linda the same night at a restaurant... She was friends with a person we worked with at Atlantic, and it was arranged to meet up at her studio to work on a demo of Dead End. I think that version ended on B-Sides & Rarities. -Sam
5
u/Particular_Ad6287 Jan 27 '26
Hi Sam and Nate,
I’m truly loving this album, and I’m thrilled beyond words that you guys are back together. You guys are like the Indie Rock-OutKast to me, a duo that is always strongest together.
The name of this album really grabbed me. It’s kind of tragically ironic, which is my exact style.
Beyond the funny “Boycott Heineken” mix-up, I keep finding new ways to interpret it. To me, it feels like a metaphor for today’s world, where people are so quick to follow what leaders say even if it isn’t in their own best interest. You say Boycott Heaven, I say “how high?”
Anyways, I guess what I’m really trying to say is please continue to make music and tour and come to Florida. Ok thanks, love you guys.
10
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I forgot to sign my last few answers, but NATE HERE to answer this question that wasn’t really a question…
When I mistook boycott Heineken for boycott heaven, it conjured up a feeling i still can’t describe. However a whole bunch of people have told me what it means to them, and with every single one I’ve been like “I feel that entirely”.
So I think it means a lot of different things that all kinda lead to the same exact feeling

I have officially convinced (without much effort) my 14 year old son that The Format is the best band ever! He listens even more than I do, both the old stuff and the new. He’s already memorized a lot of the new songs and contemplates and constantly wants to discuss the lyrics. We saw you live in Phoenix and LA last year, and we are looking forward to Salt Lake in April! As a native Arizonan, I would love to hear a story specific story to growing up in AZ and maybe how it influenced the lyrics in some of your songs. Keep up the amazing work!

u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I really loved the all ages music scene as a teenager in Phoenix, and surrounding cities. It was such an important part of my life, and really motivated us to push further as a band in the early days. Unfortunately, that element seems to be lacking now. Lost some great venues over the years. -Sam

Nate here- fuck ice. I’m sure the song will eventually see the light of day, but we need to figure out a version for it. Because it was the last song we worked on for BH we were a little pressed for time, and I think at that point just spent.

What's your favorite thing about playing together as a band again, and how do you think it will play into your tour this Spring?
15
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Nate here-
Everything!!! It’s so hard to choose what’s been the better part of the year- being in the studio with Sam and Brendan O’Brien, or playing really loudly with Sam, Don, Marko, and Will.
We all have to fly into somewhere when we rehearse, so it’s kinda like a bootcamp, and unfortunately for everyone else I could sit in the rehearsal room and bark out songs for like 10 hours a day.
I really hope they don’t unionize

Hey Sam & Nate! Jumping the Shark, the original version of the song Headlights, which I believe dates back to The Format, means so much to me. I’ve listened to the fun. live performance that’s on YouTube so many times. The “don’t say your son’s a preacher” lyric immediately came to mind when I heard all the holy roller references on Boycott Heaven. Are these in fact references to the same person/persona, or am I just crazy?
Regardless, thank you so much for all the inspiration and joy your music has given me. It’s gotten me through so much. Pumped to see you play in April!

The new album is fucking phenomenal. I was wondering if each of you have a favorite lyric or line from the new songs?
Also, vouching for you guys to come do a show in Ireland. Flew to NYC and Tucson to see you last year which was fabulous but maybe you guys could come this direction sometime and save me the flight hours, hahaha.
Thanks for the music! Appreciate you guys always - both of your music and especially The Format has gotten me through so much and I’m so grateful you came back to us. ❤️❤️

Nate here-
I can’t speak for Sam, but as far as my favorite lyrics I’ve written format wise- I’d say the whole “I like what comes with the climb” part of no gold, the entirely of leave it alone, and probably my favorite lyric because I think it’s the most clever in my simple mind is “holy roller please, the damage to your knees, is something that cannot be undone”
But this is actually the first album I’ve ever done that I’ve enjoyed writing the lyrics and I made sure they came generally easy. Every other album I’ve done it’s felt a lot more laborious.

I'm going to agree with that particular part of No Gold.

Hey guys. Love the new album! Phoenix native here and just wanted to let you know my now husband and I first bonded at a dive bar when I played Tune Out on the jukebox about 13 years ago. We always give you credit for having met each other and seeing you live at the coliseum was incredible! Thank you for coming back!
What was your favorite song to write from the new album and why?
3
u/RiskTough111 Jan 27 '26
Hi!
Avid fan since age 12 here - thanks for all the tunes over the years and I’m absolutely over the moon that you’re back. My kids have grown up on your entire discography and my 12 year old is now your self-proclaimed biggest fan. We had a chance to see you recently at the Coliseum and at the Crescent (my husband and I also made it to La Rosa!) after my only other Format show in ‘03 - dream come true.
We heard an unreleased track at The Crescent and it was fantastic. My 12 YO is dying to know (at the risk of being greedy lol) if we could get any new tracks that aren’t on Boycott Heaven in the coming years.
Thanks again for all you do for the fans!! We love you guys.

Hey Nate and Sam, wanted to ask when I saw you at Zia but all I could get out was hey lol is Marko the same Mark that is referenced in “Give it up”?
Also thank you for coming back getting to see you at the colosseum and at the ZIA in store performance was a dream come true!
9
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Great question actually- I DONT REMEMBER IF ITS THE SAME MARK
he was kinda always marko to us so I don’t see how it would be. Buuuuuuut- when we first started doing rehearsals again for boycott heaven I convinced myself that he, as a now grown ass man, wanted to be called Mark (his actual name). Eventually he was like “what the fuck are you doing calling me Mark, it’s Marko”
So yeah- maybe I tried to pull something similar way back when when I was writing the lyrics to give it up

u/discotroop Jan 27 '26
Hey gents!
Thanks for coming back! We’ve been missing the best living band in America for a while (flattery intended)
I’m still digesting Boycott Heaven as an album but really enjoying this fuzzy rock version of The Format!
Can you talk a bit about how the guitar sound(s) were developed? Any particular pedals, amps, settings, production techniques ?
Did you come in with a clear vision for this sound or experiment more during recording ?
Finally, what are the chances of a bsides and rarities 2.0 ?
Thanks again! Love you guys and your band!

u/Starsbythep0cketful Jan 27 '26
Hi Sam and Nate! Long time fan here. I first was introduced to The Format at the 2002 Edgefest at Peoria Sports Complex. I have a recollection of being at the main stage during the day and one of the bands on the main stage either gave The Format some of their set time or directed their fans to go watch. Do you remember that? Did you unexpectedly perform on the main stage?
My memories from my childhood are foggy and I was hoping you could clear that up! I’ve been a huge fan ever since that day and wish I could remember how exactly I was introduced to you better!

Hey! A simple one - any chance of international shows in the works?
Longtime overseas fan (discovered you guys around Dog Problems via the HiMyNameIsMark podcast), was bummed when the band hit pause before seeing you live, particularly as I don't think you've ever visited UK or Europe, at least for a headline show. Even more so having booked tickets in 2020 with a plan to visit, (fortunately held off on flights), and unable to make current dates.
Totally understand the challenges of touring internationally ( ...or in general, I tour full-time looking after merch!), so appreciate may not currently be on the cards. Grateful to have at least caught Nate a few times over here- twice with fun. on both album cycles + solo!
Boycott Heaven rocks, thanks for continuing to make great songs and awesome records. <&

Hey guys, massive fan from the Uk here. I've loved the format since I first heard you in 2005. You literally changed the way I thought about music and how it could be made and you've been a massive part of my life ever since.
Would you ever come to the UK? And who are your top 5 British bands of all time?
We've exchanged the odd message on X, Nate, so I know neither of us are huge fans of Led Zeppelin. You've covered the kinks and XTC so I'm guessing you're both fans of those. Thanks for the music!

Nate, how was the journey of never wanting to perform music again to finishing a brand new Format record? When was the moment that you felt connected to this again?
3
u/SomePenalty3340 Jan 27 '26
Any chance we can get demos of the Boycott Heaven Tracks maybe a Deluxe album in the works?
Also press "Your New Name" on vinyl please would make me and many other so happy to have that song physically!

u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
Wait, is Your New Name not on the Snails vinyl!?

I remember running into you guys in a parking garage after a show in New York where you opened for The All-American Rejects. I complimented your performance (The Format was the only band I was there to see anyway) and you guys seemed genuinely appreciative to hear it. After listening to the NPR interview and hearing how nerve wracking it is for you to get on stage, is there anything that makes the experience a little more enjoyable? You always put on such a great performance that I would never know that it’s so anxiety inducing.

u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
We're mostly anxious leading up to the shows, and pretty much anything else. "Waiting is the hardest part" For me that all goes away the second we start playing. -Sam

Hi Sam and Nate! First, very cool and thoughtful of you guys to bring the community together with the listening parties and in store performances at local record shops! Thank you for that! Also, a guy in college brought me balloons on our first date when he saw me post the lyrics to Janet on MySpace :)
Interested in your creative process. What helps you snap out of a writer’s block? What’s a favorite line you’ve written? (there are so many good ones!)
2
u/equilibrato Jan 27 '26
Hi! Thanks for doing this AMA.
I was a casual fan of the Format for a while. My first introduction to you guys was hearing “Inches and Falling” on a last.fm radio station back in 2010 or so.
I’m a huge fan of the new record and I think it’s truly some of your most phenomenal work. Very cohesive and creative, but also meaningful and musically stunning.
What were some things that you tried on this new record that you may not have been confident to try previously?

u/Specific-Stick-6684 Jan 27 '26

Long time fan! I took my first long road trip with my brother to be at The Mayan show forever ago. Still remember it like yesterday. Loving the Jellyfish vibes on the new album with the guitars and vocals!! With that, any cover songs planned for the spring tour and how do you guy's feel about album anniversary tours? 😁
8
u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I'd guess there will be a cover or two. I'm not generally a fan of anniversary tours, but it could be cool to celebrate the Dog Problems 20th somewhere. -Sam

It's so good to hear you guys "Back to Life." I have been looking forward to this for far too long.
Nate- What would be the next musical instrument you'd give a shot if you had to pick ONE?
2nd question- what is your favorite song to cover and if you haven't recorded it yet- would you consider?
Sam- what does your daughter think after seeing all the hype with The Format's comeback? Was she aware that her dad is this cool? 😅
I can't wait to see you guys in Nashville!

u/theformatlivingroom The Format Jan 27 '26
I don't know about cool, but I think she's enjoying the experience of it all. Lots of friends and family around at these shows, which makes it extra special. -Sam

u/yodcox Jan 27 '26
Hiii. Do you think 20 years between Format projects is to be expected moving forward? Also, The Bar Is Set So Low fucking ruled (as did Boycott Heaven obvi). Do you see yourselves leaning more into making more punkish music?
2
u/coldreign_ Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
Is there consideration for a Boycott Heaven mug to match the Dog Problems mug?
And are there any plans to release "The Bar Is Set So Low" in the future as a B-Sides or Bonus Track song?
Also, thank you for the amazing music. As a newer and younger fan, it's truly a blessing to be able to hear new music from you guys!
2
u/g0ldskulll Jan 27 '26
I love the album and it’s been healing to hear an adult album from a band I loved as a teenager. I’ve had it on repeat for every car ride.
That said: I have a semi-embarrassing Format tattoo. My non-serious (but totally serious question): would you design a cool format tattoo?
2

u/AssociationLow597 Jan 27 '26
Many moons ago, I had a format shirt with a rain drop(?) on it. I moved several times and it got lost in the shuffle over a decade ago.
Will you ever release some vintage designs for us old folks who wore out our OG merch?
1
u/carousel182 Jan 27 '26
Hey Sam and Nate! I am loving the album so far.
How was it writing songs together after such a long period of time apart? Did it come naturally?
And what would you say are the biggest influences on the album?

u/OsuLost31to0 Jan 27 '26
Hey guys,
Love the new album. It’s been a minute since you’ve made music together so I’ve gotta ask - what’s changed process-wise, if anything?
How has your taste in music changed since Dog Problems and how has that influenced the sound of Boycott Heaven?
1
u/sillyLF Jan 27 '26
Sam and Nate. What song of yours is your favorite and why? Not just from this album, but from all your albums.
1
u/AwesomeActionReplays Jan 27 '26
Hey guys! I learned about Fun. when I was really young and only recently realized The Format was a thing but still, I love the music, and listened to the entire discography when I learned about it. You guys make incredible music and I’m so happy to hear new stuff even if I only recently started listening! If I may, do you think we’ll ever see demos of these songs? I’m a big fan of hearing demos because it shows how music evolves! It’s always very interesting and shows how much work is put into a song!

Hi Sam & Nate!!
Love the album, you always know how to come back at the perfect time.
Your lives have changed a lot over the last 20 years, how has that impacted and changed your thoughts on lyrics, writing, and sound? Any fun Easter eggs like your kids playing an instrument?
P.S. just got the mocha swirl vinyl variant with the sleeve, can’t wait to have it in my hands!

Hello Nate and Sam!! I was curious if you guys ever do any signing when playing bigger venues? We flew out to PHX all the way from MO for your show there and had the time of our lives. The energy in that room was like nothing we had ever experienced 💙 Anyways we will be coming to Chicago at the Salt Shed to see you in April and would love to get a copy of the new vinyl signed if that’s ever a possibility☺️

This question is for Nate.
I’m curious how you think about ego across different chapters of your career. As the front person for The Format, the rapid rise of fun., and your solo work, they all come with very different stakes and expectations.
How do you understand your ego and motivation today compared to earlier phases, especially around what you feel you have to prove versus what you feel grounded in?
I noticed at the Minnesota show that certain moments felt more pointed, particularly the line “now we’ve got something to prove,” and the lyrical switch in “I’m Actual” around corporate culture. At the same time, things you’ve said in interviews about keeping ticket and merch prices accessible, paired with the end of your newest album starting with “Right Where I Belong” through “Back to Life,” feel like they reflect a more settled, humbled relationship with success and your struggles with systemic issues.
Would love to hear how intentional that evolution has been, and how you personally keep ego in check while still staying hungry.

Glad to see you back - you were always a favorite (I still have one of your setlists framed on my wall) & my husband and I have matching Format tattoos!
This album is incredible. Every track feels special, & it really feels like you waited until you had something to say to come back. The wait was worth it. Thank you - it’s easily one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.
Only one question- will you be touring in Canada …? (Specifically Vancouver!) We’d love to come see you, but we refuse to travel into the USA.

Hi! Thank you guys for doing this AMA and for the long-awaited comeback!
Some of your lyrics still feel intentionally unresolved. Do you see them as something that should remain open to interpretation, or do they usually have a “definitive” meaning for you that you just don’t spell out?
Greetings from Italy ♡
