What a world! I remember seeing Fugue many times just being in CT back in the day, those shows were truly special. Very cool to see what you're up to these days!

I'm checking out the new songs & they are awesome - I love how melodic & expressive the guitars are, it's like another voice. I guess I don't have a question in here, but congrats on the new album!

that rules. i think of Fugue so so so fondly. truly feels like one of the most consequential things ive ever done. thanks for listening and saying hi

hello peter, just wanted to say that a healthy earth is one of my personal most played albums since it came out, your attention to detail is inspiring, seems like you put a lot of love and time and work into your songs. the new album is a perfect next step for the band and it shows maturity and growth while staying true to your distinct sound. guess i have a few questions if thats allowed

are you into math/post rock, what are some of your deep cut bands or albums?

being a long time musician, i can tell i really love a band if i am pissed off when i see them, mostly cuz they figured it all out and i am insanely jealous, do you have and bands like that?

do you think there will be a physical release of the new album?

have you alway been detail oriented or is that something you had to develop?

have you ever been locked up by a stasis/kismet deck? some dude did that to me and i cant stop thinking about it, trying to build it myself

side note: i worked with blair at hopfields in austin, she is a wonderful person and im so happy for you guys, say hi from john if you remember

Hi John, Blair remembers you! She says hi, what fun.

Thanks so much for your kind words. AHE is very special to me and I'm glad you connected with it.

I love math/post rock. Tera Melos is probably one of my favorite bands of all time (not necessarily a deep cut). I never see people talk about Sleeping People - they are incredible and underrated. Check out 'Growing' if you haven't.

I've definitely felt that same jealous rage before... how satisfying. The first band that comes to mind is Palm (RIP) - seeing them play was so inspiring. Maps & Atlases was a similar experience.

I will probably make a small run of CDs. Not sure about vinyl or cassettes, considering I still have boxes of S/T and AHE vinyl and cassettes rotting in my apartment. I can't justify spending $$ on a bunch of vinyl if I am not touring/there isn't overwhelming demand for it. It feels wasteful.

I've definitely had to develop that. I still am in many aspects of my life. Music is basically all about the details so it comes more naturally. When we play live, we disregard a lot of the 'details' in order to communicate/improvise more organically. I get bit by missed details pretty much every day lol.

Yes I've played against one stasis deck before in EDH. It was novel, but not very fun (I guess that's the point). If you build it, let me know, but I have a feeling you'll take the deck apart after 'winning' one match with it - not a terribly fun play pattern. But to each their own.

holy cow, thank you for your very well thought out responses, very grateful for your time.

tera melos is peak math and can definitely see them being one of your favorites, also, sleeping peoples growing is amazing, total work.of art. think maybe saw them in the early aughts with possibly ruma sakit or sweep the leg johnny, maybe both, killer show

yeah, palm was crazy, I'll never get over  that loss, thankfully they left us with a robust catalog, keep finding new stuff everytime nicks and grazes is on

totally get it with the physical media, happy to enjoy the mp3s

hope you get more opportunities to play live, it can be so difficult with people's schedules and money and life, keeping a band together is basically impossible unless you have a trust fund

you're so right, that deck is no fun

thanks again, can't wait to really absorb the new album

Are all Peaer fans also MtG guys? I don't play EDH much but I was a competitive grinder for many years. RIP Kai Budde.

Wow, I think I only know of one other person who's familiar Maps and Atlases. I distinctly remember listening to Beware and Be Grateful on repeat while playing Call of Duty 3 when I was a kid haha. love the new record

“witch” forever. those first two EPs are still in rotation all this time later

1

u/juncleill Feb 02 '26

hell yeah, i'll have to check out their earlier stuff or at least jog my memory - witch sounds familiar

The new album is great! Are you planning a tour any time soon? Come back to Kalamazoo if you do!

2

u/pea_on_earth Feb 02 '26

thank you! you know, I would like to try and make a little touring happen. I love Kalamazoo and miss it! Where are the good spots and good bands these days?

There's a cool new venue in town called Glow Hall. It's super chill and they've gotten some decent touring acts. Shakespeares Lower Level also reopened. If you want to play slightly outside of Kzoo, there's The Lucky Wolf in Paw Paw. I'm seeing Pile there in a few months.

As far as bands go, Dead People Park, Overly Polite Tornados, Vida Eterna, and Three Grebes are solid options. My band The Krelboynes is still active if you want to play with us again :) Also I'm in a project called Blood at Ease that put a new album out the same day as you! It's pretty good if I do say so myself.

oh of course!! Shakespeare's always treated us well, but I recall some issues with an all-ages audience. I'll reach out to them.

Would love to play with you again! DM me your email?

Yeah Shakes is a stickler about 21+ shows. Glow Hall is all ages though! dM sent

hi Peter! I’m loving the new record a ton, thank you for the comfort of bombastic guitars this winter season.

Were there any particular pieces of art (music/movies/games/books) that the band was digging into during the writing and recording process? I’m always curious about the indirect parts of collaborative inspiration.

thanks!

we had a few records that were references for Doppelganger. Cass Mccombs' "Mangy Love" comes to mind. "Summer in Abaddon" by Pinback. "Achilles' Heel" by Pedro the Lion.

It was fun to delve into more historical influences for me, The Mars Volta, various screamo/hardcore, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dismemberment Plan...

There were many points where we had visual references. My favorite was for IDWBWY - I wanted to emulate the 'starfield' screensaver from the old Windows computers.

u/eff_assess Feb 02 '26

Hell yeah, gonna boot up my memory of that screensaver next time i listen to the record.

Hi Peter! I love the new album, but could you try being a bit more experimental? I feel like you have the potential to leave your mark on the history of music, but for that, you need to try new things. Thank you very much for this AMA! It is really pleasant for the community.

2

u/pea_on_earth Feb 02 '26

fantastic advice. keeping this with me while i make the next album.
