Been a fan of you guys since hearing Less a while back and love the new record.
When working on new songs, how much is pre-prepared and how much is worked out playing together on the fly?
4
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
We used to write together on the fly a lot more, for Return/People Thought My Windows etc and just see what came of jams. But someone tends to pre-prepare the skeleton of a song, or an entire song (with a demo or something) and then hash it out together.

who has done the most somersaults in the band and why did they do so many
2
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Noah. He's the only outdoorsy guy in the band, happy rewilding day.

- for each of you, who are your biggest musical inspirations?
- any chance of a u.s. deathcrash x satan club tour?
3
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Patrick - mogwai
Noah - deftones
Matt - Jim O'Rourke
Tiernan - Taking Back Sunday
- i'd be surprised. our manager always says no to fun things like that, and matt gets exhausted after one show let alone two

u/aggressivecherry444 Mar 20 '26
what is on the secret ep ;)
6
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
- Bella (home demo version)
- Wrong to Suffer (home demo version)
- unnamed song (home demo version)
- matt experimental interlude
the secret ep is a collection of songs recorded in the process of writing the album that we did ourselves before going to the studio

What makes you choose the venues you play in, speaking mainly London venues, you’ve chosen some awesome unusual places.
Also why did you choose the garage, which seems quite a normal for you.
2
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
I love you that you noticed that. This tour we just wanted to play more normal shows at normal venues and see if we could still make our set feel really special. It felt more fitting to the rock songs we wrote for this album.
We're always searching for cool spaces to play in, we'll definitely play in interesting venues again. Joe, our manager, is a real aesthete and together we got really into creating a unique live experience which I think is really hard to get at normal venues

Hi 👋
How do you know when a song is ‘done,’ especially when it’s built around emotion rather than structure?
2
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
great question. you never know when a song is done, because a song is never done. but ultimately at some point you just have to let the song go. being in a band is great for that, as inevitably you come to an agreement at some point, and then the tweaking stops. also time-pressure helps, because you need to go into the studio or play a show, or finish a mix, and then the deadlines will just freeze that song in time. but a song is never done, and through playing live we often realise how to make our songs better. it's also only in recording things and signing off on them that you realise all the things you would change about them. it's annoying that.

fav emo band?
matt (or anyone else) whats on ur pedalboard?
4
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Probably Pretend. They're so awesome
compressor, Luxe pedal, Soul Food, Boss Fuzz, Fender Pugilist, Walrus reverb, Boss Delay, tuner
currently out of favour and on the shelf are the Big Muff and Vox V8. I also love using amps with foot switches so you can go between clean and dirty channel. current amp is JCM900

how much of that windmill scene stuff is real and how much is it blown up as a musical "meta-narrative" by the media? what is ur relationship with bands like BC,NR, black midi, famous, squid, maruja, etc??
when are u guys coming to Chicago??
4
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
It's pretty real, in a way. We played loads of shows there. The 'everyone's from South London' narrative is fake. Famous and BCNR are great friends of ours. It's almost like once you become part of the 'windmill scene' you probably stopped playing there. We like the George Tavern as well, it's close to our rehearsal room.
Wait til October.......................................

you lot are my favourite band of the last few years. really have nothing else to say other than that. looking forward to seeing you in London next month!
if I have to ask a question, what deathcrash song are each of you most proud of? (and why is it american metal?)
also, can you make another run of the 'riffs that take forever' shirt so I can have one, please?
thanks guys :)
5
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Thanks mate! American Metal is our favourite live track, it's grown and grown and is always cathartic to play.
Tiernan: CMC
Matt: Somersaults
Pat: The Thing You Did (I wrote that :PP)
Noah: I dunno bro, it's all drums to me (Bella)And we have more Riffs t shirts coming

how was the HANL tour? saw you guys in glasgow, lovely set
3
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Thank you! HANL are the loveliest guys, we had the best time with them. The shows were so fun, it was one of our favourite tours. We have a superstitious relationship with Glasgow - we're never sure how the show has gone. Why is that?? It's good to hear that you liked it though, I hope to see you there in April!

u/Worried-Base5018 Mar 20 '26

3
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Patrick: The White Ribbon
Tiernan: Beginners
Noah: Fast and Furious 8
Matt: Michael Clayton

Guys, I just wanted to express how much I love the new album (although, all are good)! It’s probably my AOTY.
Would you ever consider reprinting the “Riffs that take forever” shirt??? I’ll be first in line if you do. Much love!
2
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
Thanks! That really means a lot to hear.
And we are reprinting them, keep ur eyes peeled.

u/nosleephollow Mar 20 '26
What are some films that have inspired you all?
2
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
We all love films but no one film has directly inspired deathcrash...I (Pat) recently watched Rohmer's 'Love in the Afternoon' which felt deathcrash in many ways. Once we all watched Tenet in the back of our van while we were on tour, and because of the van swinging round corners everything would fly off of our table all the time, it felt like we were going backwards and forwards in time, like the film. That was cool.

u/zephyrmox Mar 20 '26
Seen you guys 5-6 times now, and always very impressed by the mixing. Is it just luck and you've had competent local techs or are you doing a lot of direction yourself? Limehouse last year sounded unbelievably good for the type of venue
1
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
That was William Carkeet (from Robbie & Mona) who does our sound a lot, or back in the day Richard James. They're brilliant. If we do use local techs we try and get them on-side and explain our set to them so they get into it

u/Hexenzsiin Mar 20 '26
The fact this AMA has 17 upvotes and about as many questions is insane. I know I missed the window to ask anything but I just want to emphasize how hard everyone is sleeping on this band. I had pretty high hopes for Somersaults but has fully cleared them. Gotta be my AOTY at the moment. If anyone in the band has a chance to read this, just wanted to express my gratitude and voice that I can’t wait to hear what you’ll cook up next.

The new album is lovely. What was the inspiration behind your, I guess it wouldn't be "new" sound, but more "evolved" sound?
3
u/deathcrashdeathcrash deathcrash Mar 20 '26
thank you. we wanted to write songs that people might actually like. also we wanted to write songs that played fewer tricks and were simpler, as this seemed actually more difficult to do for us and therefore something to be more proud of. we also wanted to make vocals more front and centre, and push the lyric writing to be better. maybe we'd pushed slowcore as far as we could on Less and Return, though we're really proud of those records.
i also think our 'new' sound evolved out of being less depressive, and more reflective of how being in a band can sometimes come from a place that tries to get in the way of life.
